Unbelievable that is the first thing that came to mind when I found out my field has been mowed...I have been waiting for this moment for months...Driving by every day!!! Well today I got the call...It has been MOWED!!!! No way I said.....Yes way dude....I am on my way!!! And that is how it all started. I met my buddy John at the field and we decided to work around the area we parked. I usually park 100 feet further up the road so I had never hit this area....My first signal.....And what a signal........Now anyone who uses a Whites XLT knows if you get a +89 signal that does not waiver....You dig very carefully....I took my time pinpointing this target....5" deep....Well After getting down 5 inches I was still hitting a strong+89......Oh boy....I am telling you people....I had goosebumps....I still do....But there was a problem.....My target was not in the center of the hole like my trusty Whites XLT told me....Nor was it 5"s deep...It was on the side of the hole...at a HALF inch!!!! OMG I scratched it.....Poor John....He must have thought I was insane...I was running across the field on a dead run.....Screaming punch me in the face...I ruined it....What he was thinking......Until I opened my hand.... And there it was.............OMG A 1795 FLOWING HAIR HALF DOLLAR!!!! Well let me tell you....I am not sure IF I scratched her or if she was hit by the plow...All I know is she was hit....A HEART BREAKING thing...I almost puked on the spot...I hope this does kill the value....I also found this button...It has a girl scout type symbol with GS on the top an some type of bird in the symbol....And this worn big time...coppa. My buddy found a 1787 NJ copper in very nice shape....I would tell you more but I really want to post this....I must go puke now...sigh... Grin

silver, the new scratch looks really shiny.

Congrats on a trully excellent find! The front scratches look quite old, on the reverse center bottom it looks like it got clipped by a digger but you know it is what it is, puke if you want I would but it takes nothing away from making such a great find. How many of these dollars have been dug in the last 7 years? This is the first I have ever seen posted!

I just did some research on this coin....I think it is a half dollar. I compared it to my silver dollar and it is a little smaller but a little bigger than a half dollar. On the rim it reads...FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR....I feel silly now...lol. O well I guess it is a Half dollar....Sigh

WOW!  I can imagine your excitement when you saw what you had found.  Anyway you look at it, it is a beautiful find.  Keep on that site no telling what else is lurking underground.  Thanks for sharing the photo.  Wonder if the Girl Scout button's bird might be a Blue Bird.  I'm not sure if the Blue Birds and Girl Scout organizations were ever connected or had a relationship to each other though.

Those blemishes will diminish the value of the coin a great deal, but it is an incredible find nonetheless.  I got to hold a 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar a few months ago (it led to me getting the silver farm) and it had a gouge that cut its price from $2000-3000 to $500.  The dollar is worth a lot more than the half.  Great find!

A FIND OF A LIFETIME - SCRATCH OR NO SCRATCH! A COIN LIKE THAT IS ON ALL OF OUR WISH (DREAM) LIST! INCREDIBLE! CERTAINLY SHOULD MAKE THE BEST FINDS OF 2007 ISSUE. BY THE WAY, TO AVOID SCRATCHING ITEMS IN THE FUTURE (THOUGH I'M NOT SAYING YOU SCRATCHED THIS ONE), WHEN IN A FIELD OR THE WOODS, USE A 26" GARDEN SHOVEL AND YOU CAN CUT A REAL WIDE PLUG TO BE SURE YOUR NOT NEAR THE TARGET.

I think back at the luck I have had this year with my first gold coin, Over 20 seated dimes, 1796 Liberty Cap LC, 1805 LC...My first Silver dollar......And over 150 silvers.....Life could not get any better...Until TODAY that is!!!! Man I love this hobby!!! I still have goosebumps!!!

That's an incredible find for sure!

I wonder what a person could buy with a half dollar in 1795? I'm sure when you walk onto that field next time it will be 10 times more exciting to hunt.

Just knowing, maybe there's another one.... ;)

    Congratulations, Outraged!

    Great job!

I can only imagine how much 50 cents from 1795 would be in todays money. This person must have been sick over losing it. I was sick from finding it....All in all.....the last 2 people to touch this coin were sick over it...lol. I will be meeting a buddy at this site at 9 AM tomorrow...I PRAY for another...lol...Yea I wish!!!

Congratulations, Outraged, for finding the best silver coin I have ever seen posted... Shocked  The hairs on my arms are standing just looking at that pic.  Can't imagine how you feel.  Yes, no sleep for you tonight.  Maybe you should go and camp out at that field of yours... Grin

Scratch or no scratch, that is a beauty for sure.  To think I felt bad today when I nicked the three mercs I found, because of the hard soil conditions.  Hey, if you think you scratched it or not, it happens to the best of us.  If the area around the coin had been plowed up, the scratch most likely would have happened at the time of the plowing.

Not very many people today can say they found one of those coins.  Yes, I'd say it's definitely a find of a lifetime.

The prices "DigginItUp" posted for you are for Early Dollars, not Halves.  Per PCGS, here's the prices for the Early Halves:

                                                        G     F       EF      AU      60     62     63

    1795/1795 Recut Date, 3 Leaves    2500 4500 16500 30000 45000 - - - - -
    1795 Small Head                           900 3000 13500 30000 38000 57500 - - - -
    1795/1795 Recut Date, 2 Leaves    1000^ 4000^ 13500 - - - - -

    Congrats, again, bud.

PS - outraged, check out the pic of the rev. of a flowing hair that's being sold on ebay for around $2000. I'm looking at the "A" on STATES on your coin, and I think yours may be of this variety.  Easily recognizable as O-113 (R.3) as the word STETES was originally cut in error then recut as STATES; the serifs of the E are plainly visible behind the A.

I took the liberty of researching how much things cost in 1795. Here's a page from a guys diary from that year.

Here's the link to the entire diary. It's strange how they used "f" as "s".
    http://books.google.com/books?id=aitehkG9knUC&dq=1795+united+states&printsec=frontcover&source=web&ots=20RlWFLmUe&sig=EcYgX2iJ-0T3nUKaYSRcpE0s1fk#PPP11,M1

It's fun to read. Kirk. When you read it, feel free to just insert plenty of sauntering 1795 "dudes".  Cheesy

    Congratulations again, outraged!

Most outstanding!!  Plow struck or something else.  No digger, so, you can stop puking now.  I admire all northerners in the fact that there are so many more places, to hunt there, that will produce those kinds of results.  My oldest coin to date is an 1883 Indian Head in mucho fine condition.  It was a stroke of luck and will probably never be duplicated by me.

You on the other hand have a buffet before you.  We might have to install speed bumps to slow you down.  Don't want you getting it all in one day Smiley  Good luck out there!!!!

Beautiful coin by the way.  Those are the kinds of finds that keep me motivated!!

Sweet!!  This spot may have a few "Once in a lifetime" finds and any good signal might be dug carefully.  Now on your "trusty Whites" did you recheck the hole??  It might be a "DUH" question, but what if there happened to be another "good" signal there??  I'm sure you probably did, but who knows what happens when you have a great find, then the frustration of thinking you "ric'd" it.  So maybe recheck the hole a day later if you haven't.  I know when I had my XLT, I felt it was good at pinpointing, not perfect mind you, but good!!  Anyways, thanks for sharing that pic, great find, but great shot of our past too!!

Congrats on a super find, not too often early silver of any type is found and this one is a goodie.

Capt_ Se (Dan) is correct on the attribution,  I went to an auction site and looked at quite a few of the O-113a that sold in recent years, this one is similar in wear condition to yours, however, the slight rim damage, scratches and what looks like pit corrosion, which happens in old silver will take a great VF-35 coin down a bit on net grade I am afraid.

    Quote
O-113a, R.4. A rough broken patch between the date and star 15 is diagnostic of the obverse. On the reverse, the A in STATES was cut over an E, and there are nine berries on each branch. This later die state also displays a faint die crack joining most of the letters in LIBERTY at the top, as well as rough breaks or defects between stars 12 and 14.

When I see coins like this I go to my catalogs for comparisons for ID help, condition, price.
I have found the Heritage Auction website to be very helpful in attributing coins I do not have books for for ID'ing the different varieties. LOL< the 1795 Half Dollar has 30 some varieties, and price can vary greatly based on variety, more so than condition.

    Again, GREAT FIND!!!!

Haven't seen that nice of an old US silver since the 1776 Continental Dollar that was W&E's find of the year a while back.

    Congrats of the highest order!!!

Kick arse find to say the least ;)

OutRaged, I have to share with everyone what you said on the phone when you called me...

"Today is the best and worst day I've had metal detecting... I found a flowing hair silver... and I spiked it! When you get here I'll be in the road... run me over with your Jeep!"

     Cheesy Grin Roll Eyes

    Too funny!

I'm glad to hear that everyone seems to be on agreement that you didn't spike it Smiley

Way to go, making my 1787 New Jersey Copper pale in comparison Grin

Of course a coin like that tends to do that to any coin found the same day Cheesy

Here's a quick couple of pics of my 220 year old copper (found at the same site) if anybody even cares Roll Eyes

    Again,

Congrats on the killa find OutRaged!

Definitely scratched on the reverse at the bottom.  The small scrapes on the front appear old, but the back is fresh.

Fantastic coin!  The damage makes me sick too.

I've never broken the 1900 mark...I'm 41 and have been detecting since I got my first detector, which I had to BEG for, when I was in 4th grade for my birthday in 1973....It was from Sears and now that I think about it, I wish I knew where it was...I'll ask my mom. That's a find of a lifetime my friend....Keep at it and good luck....

...PS - outraged, check out the pic of the rev. of a flowing hair that's being sold on ebay for around $2000. I'm looking at the "A" on STATES on your coin, and I think yours may be of this variety.  Easily recognizable as O-113 (R.3) as the word STETES was originally cut in error then recut as STATES; the serifs of the E are plainly visible behind the A.

I just saw this post from Captn_SE.  Is this true?!?!  I can't tell from the pic, but if it's true, it's time to get it professionally cleaned, graded and slabbed, no matter how beat up it is...and forget about the dancehall in Castleton.  You gotta show me this field!

Never underestimate the stupidity of people.

Wow! Shocked  Just crazy.  The NJ copper is great too but the flowing hair half is just a little better. ;) Grin

You and old Grube are stealing the show here on TNET.  You guys are in your own league.

It's very encouraging to see that these sites are out there - even if they are in NY.  This is what keeps me motivated....that sense of the next site being a great one.  All you need is one good site and it will produce for many many hunts.

We found this field from old maps that show 2 homes on it. The field is 19 acres. I guess from what I can tell there used to be a road running right through the middle of the field. Keep in mind this is not a fresh site. We have been hammering this site for 4 or so years. It has produced over 200 coins including 8 spanish silvers and my 1795...Also if memory serves me right a few mercs...It just goes to show you....Every year hit those old sites....You never know what the frost has turned up. I hit this site early this year and found 8 large pennies. The interesting part is this field has not been tilled since we hunted it the first time. It is slated to be tilled in september according to the farmer. I can assure you I will be on vacation that week....I will hunt by moonlight if I have to....Thanks guys for all your replies....You guys make a great experience even greater!!!

Well I can't think of much else to add that hasn't already been said..but a find like this deserves a small tribute..

Outraged found a flowing hair,  he really did no jive
A big fat silver slab of coin,  a seventeen ninety five,

He waited months for them to mow, then hunted like a pro,
It rang up as an 89, which must be good you know,

It seemed to be 5 inches down, but that was not the case,
If any closer to the top, she could slap him in the face.

He thought at first a dollar,  but looking closer he made out,
It was "only"  half a dollar,  a rare find still no doubt ,

But with all his care, it seemed to him , he still did cause a nick,
And the thought that he did do this, really made him sick,

Well if  he did, it’s over now, a great find none the less,
And even with the damage, his pants he still did  mess,

It made the banner where it belongs, almost as good as it can get,
But in awhile I’m sure we’ll see, in the best of Treasure Net,

Outraged found a flowing hair, as pretty as can be,
Congrats to him and all the best, just wish that it was me.

Just where is this East Greenbush place anyway???   Huh Grin Great find man!! Got my shirt last week too. Also awesome!!

Have you lived here all your life? PM me sometime, I've got some spots around the "manor" that might peak your interest. I spend most of my time diving and fishing these days.

    Again, very nice find!!!

I grew up in Chatham. However I have lived in the "Bush" for 4 years now. This coin was found in Columbia County though. Let me know...I found a cannon in the Manor once...

*Just pulling your strings Minelabers! Kiss Cheesy
If he had been using a Minelab, he would have found the Dollar coin lying next to the half, only several inches deeper. Grin
Congrats on the totally awesome find! Shocked

It is funny you say that..The guy I have been hunting with is a Minelab,Garrett,Tesoro, and Fisher dealer. He has used all the top machines in this field....The Fisher is so unstable it is unuseable...The tesoro does ok but my whites thumped him 3-1 for finds that day. The next day he used his Explorer-SE and he did find a few DEEP coins...However he is so much slower working with that machine I thumped him worse than I did when he was using the tesoro. They all seem like good machines...However it is a field so nothing is really deep. Or if they are they are so deep no machine will reach em. I would take my XLT over any other machine in this location. Hands down.

I knew I was going to get myself into trouble when I posted my message, especially after I noticed that almost everyone on this forum uses whites. But that's ok because I've got my Sovereign GT on it's way, which gives me something to look forward to and that is, making Minelab users out of all of you. HAHAHAHAHAHA!   Just kidding, I know that what works best for someone is what they feel most comfortable with.
HH and I'm looking forward to making some great finds and posts of my own, hopefully.

That's cool, I was thinking about going with the Explorer but chose the Sovereign because I've had a Sov. XS an an XS2a and felt pretty comfortable with them and couldn't see spending the extra money for a display that I really didn't need.

Very nice.....How much would that coin be worth today?
Also what are the chances of finding a coin like that around the Lake Erie area?

Wow !!!  Way over the top find. It must have rattled your head to see that pop out. I;d say it looks like your digger smoked the edge like you figured. Don;t worry about hitting it we all do it sooner or later.I;ve knicked a few real old coins over the years and it always makes me feel like barfin' every time I look at them lol. One of the guys I started digging with 5 years ago smoked a mint condition Canadian 1914 fifty cent piece which is rare . It was under a root and he got a little too rambuctious and put a giant slash right across it. I;ll never forget the look on his face when he saw the mark and his brother commented that his coin just a worthless keepsake now lol.HH....Panz
