Dudes, Paco gave me a call today, "Dude, do you want to hit the super duper farm tonight?" Hmmm....would I turn down the offer? Hell no! I have the coppa fever right now, so I would be his sidekick for the day. A great sidekick, too, for the treasure seeking day. During detecting, I can offer volumes of entertainment. Well, I don't even have to state that fact again. You dudes already know my antics. All in all, Paco and I make the best detecting team. We enjoy each other's company to the fullest and seek oooold treasure at the same time. I, seriously, owe it all to him. He is always great at seeking out those super productive sites. He has done it many times before.

To get to the hunt, we were driving by the meadow where we had found some old coins last week....Carl had chopped the grass down super low. Thanks to his farmerly duties, I shouted, "Dude, we MUST!" Well, must we did, and did we detect. hehehe

About a half hour into the seeking, I got a jumpy "Copper" reading, but being the professional that I am...hehehe...I thought, "At the angle of the pinpoint, and null of the threshold, I, henceforth, conclude that this semi-jumpy sig must be a coppa on edge. But, if I swing my detector super fast across the hole, hmmm...it totally desists from being an evident coppa sig. Wellllll, dude, dig it!" So, dig I did, and coppa I dug. I yelled, "Large copper!" In the field, it looked to be the size of a half cent, but later, after sizing up the coin to others in the Red Book, Zoy and I are concluding that it probably is a Colonial. The coin is much thicker than an American half cent...plus, it is a little larger in diameter than a half cent. It looks to be an oooold British coppa. Maybe Don in SJ (another historical state) will be able to see some details to identify it.

After the coppa, I didn't dig nothing. Wow, I love these double negatives. hehehe So, we were done for the day.

Oh, Paco, using his back-up detector, the Classic ID, and still found a nice 1887 V-nickel. I stated, "Dude, just wait until your MXT comes in....you will be even more lethal!"

This is most likely my 7th 1700s coin this year. I love this hobby...so, when my jealous family members tell me to, "Get a life," I will tell them to, "Get a HOBBY!" hehehe

Once again, Paco, you did some great research! It is an honor to detect with you, dude! Smiley

The coin could possibly be a William III coppa. That would be late 1600s-early 1700s. The coin weighs about 9.19 grams.

A Bittersweet find, Kirk!

You should weigh and measure it.  It will narrow down the choices a bit.  I suspected the coin I found last weekend was a 1788 Vermont copper(http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,99734.0.html), and when I weighed and measured it it confirmed it.

Let me know if you dont have a scale.  I am happy with the poeple I bought mine from on eBay for 4.95 NEW (plus shipping, it came out to about $14, total)   Make sure it has both grams and grains.

Zoy and I need to purchase a scale. The coin is a lot thicker than a half cent. It should weight much more.

Kirk, that is a tough one, I myself am fortunate in that I only ever found a few coppers that bad, usually if they were found in a low swampy area, then they would look like so many field coppers do, like toast Sad.   I hunt mostly wooded sites and thus not the fertilizer damage.

There are two many possibilities of what the coin could be and I just cannot tell from the photos.

If you can see a date bar than I would lean to a KG copper, but with you saying it is thick, might rule that out.

Possible NJ copper, possible Token of some type, how about early year Large Cent?

Sorry, just cannot see enough in the photo to say one way or the other.

Try a rubbing, with Aluminum foil or tracing paper, try looking at it when wet to see details.

A scale will help only if you see details, since there are so many variables to why a coin weighs what it does, most helpful in determining counterfeits, due to lightness of a known coin.

Right now the diameter is more important in helping, but again if a counterfeit, that could be undersized, but since you say it is thick, I doubt it was a counterfeit, would not make sense. The only way counterfeiters made money was by using less copper in each coin to make the profit, thus they were almost always underweight and sometimes smaller in diameter.

If it were my copper, I would be using a wet cotton swab and work on an area where I think there is detail, no fun having a copper that you do not know what it is, so try to see something on it by cleaning away where you think some detail is left........

ADDED:  Maybe a photo of the edge would help me or someone else to ID it. Just a thought.

"The mantra has always been don't clean a (copper) coin or it will lose value.
For undug coins this is true.  For dug coins this is untrue.
The value will increase with judicious cleaning."

Thanks, for the info, Don. I know for sure it is not a Post-Colonial issue. It is smaller in diameter. It kind of sizes up to Paco's 1690 Farthing he found last year. I will post a pic of the side...so, you can see the thickness.

I just used foil on the coin....I think it may have brought a little more of a bust. It is very difficult to tell though...it just may be an unidentifiable copper from a river bottom. hahaha The coin is about 23.8 mm.

I will post some new pics tonight! Tune in later this evening for more viewing of possibly an ancient Colonial coppa. hahaha

This coin may be 1500s...or Roman...I may have stumbled across a Roman villa in PA. Which dude stated the Romans weren't here? Some dudes may need to start re-writing those history books. hehehe

Daggone Kirk!  You're finding quite a few coppers while most folks are running away from the coppers.  (slight joke.)  Sounds like you fellows have really stumbled onto a great hunting ground.  There's nothing like digging and recovering history that old.  You're creating quite a buzz and we are enjoying the photos of your finds!  I hope they all can be cleaned up and somewhat restored safely.  I'd be in seventh heaven to just find one of those old boys!

Thanks, bud, I have been on a roll lately. I now have (I am guessing this is a Colonial) 7 1700s coins this year. This would make it my 6th Colonial coppa for the year and I have 1 1770s Spanish 1/2 reale.

I love this hobby! I owe it allll to my bro, Zoy, who got me into the hobby. If it wasn't for him, I would be still weightlifting. Thanks, Zoy, for the demostration that one summer day. Thanks again! Kiss Cheesy

Hmm From weightlifting to detecting? Man that is a switch....Well I think you made the right choice...You are building a sweet collection of history there....Only reason to weight lift is if you wanna be all Arrrrnoold like. The way to look at it is If you are going to do something that will wear you out and work out your body...Why not choose the one where while your resting on your couch...You can stare at things that have been lost for hundreds of years.  ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

KirkPA - It has been a pleasure viewing your efforts and your stories this year.  I know you'll keep up the great work...

Thanks, bud, I hope to find a lot more Colonials this year. Hopefully, this fall will be the most productive in old coppas. Silver Zeus, Paco, Zoy, and I will be having a great time!

I aim to surpass my surpassing! Cheesy hahaha That don't make sense, but it sounds good.

Maybe ya'll should call the place the copperfield or the copper farm or the "copper dude" farm. Grin Way to go

I couldn't agree more.

Kirk,
Now I see why you pitch those wheats. They are like finding tinfoil compared to your coins!  Grin
Way to go Dude-E-Poo.  ;)

LMAO! "Kirk Copperfield" sounds ok, but "Kirk Coppafield" sounds awesome! hahaha

...... BUT WHERE IS THE SILVER? I HAVE AN IDEA..........I`LL LET YOU KNOW......FOLKS, THIS MAN IS A PRO.........LATER PACO

Kirk The Detectorist Pro,  I've got all the wilver from that place. All I left were the "Coppas" for you... Grin  No, seriously, way to go on what looks to be your 7th 1700's coin this year.  Great Stuff!!! You guys have some great places to hunt.  You're making me want to take a trip over there and help you look for those coppas and some of that elusive old wilver.  All I dig over here is tons of mercs, rosies, and wheats at 7-9".  It sure would be fun digging some of that real old coinage/relics at 3-4".

Congrats, dude!!

Thanks, guys, for the replies.

Oh, just remember, all relics were found on private property with the total consent from the landowners. ;)

As of 8:00 in the p.m., I bought a pocket-sized coin scale and a digital dial caliper set.  These unidentifiable zoyppers found on river bottoms will not be able to disguise themselves from zoy and doy anymore! Cheesy

Those early PA settlers did too much and that is why coppas are found in abundance!

Boy I love those types of sites your buddy is uncovering.

My hat is off to you guys. One for working so hard in the research. And two by asking and seeking permission. And 3 by giving things to owners.

You guys make the hobby stand out in a positive way. Good luck to you guys in the future.

My goal before the year started was to find 4 Colonial coppas. I now have 6, so I totally surpassed it.

I am upping my goal...I now have my mind set on 15 Colonial coppas. Shocked Smiley

Possibly my 1st 17th century coin. That is a nice fragment, but me don't care.
