To all,
We will be holding the 3rd annual Lost Dutchman Rendevous again this year. The location of the event will be the Don's camp site near the Peralta Trailhead in Gold Canyon, Arizona at the Southern foot of the Superstition Mountains. This is an absolutely wonderful place to hold the event, as we held it there last year with great success. The event is OPEN TO ALL. This will be a family type of gathering, so please keep that in mind if you plan to attend. There will be women and children (besides gollum) present. Cheesy

The dates have been set as October 26th, 27th and 28th. This is a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I'm attaching a map of the Don's camp layout with the preferred parking/camper area highlighted in blue. Bring your campers, tents, or whatever you like to "live in" for the weekend. The camp is plenty large enough to accommodate a LOT of people. The gates will be opened Friday morning, and there should be a couple of people there all day Friday to assist in setting up or whatever else anyone needs.

Nightly we will be having a gathering in the main Ramada for tales and general Dutchman related chat if you opt to attend. We are arranging for some incredible people to do some speeches/presentations. Aside from that, you will be free to do as you wish. We might arrange some hikes/visits to local areas of interest also. This is a great time of year in this range as the weather is perfect during the day for hiking or whatever and only slightly chilly at night.

Please, I urge you all to attend if you can. We are looking forward to a great year, and I'd love to see a lot of new faces. Last year was an excellent time for all who attended.

Thanks, and I hope to see all of you there! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to send me a PM or an e-mail. My e-mail address is djui5 at yahoo dot com.

For you out of towners, here is a list of local hotels to stay at:
--
There is a Best Western right off the Apache Trail. I'd highly recommend it. When we have people come visit us, they always stay there and love the place. It used to be called "the holiday" I think. Anyway, it's great.

I'm sure if expense is a concern, the Super 8 has cheap rooms.

DO NOT stay at the "Apache Junction Motel". There is also a Topaz Inn and Suites, seems kinda run down also.

If you wanna stay in Gold Canyon, which would be closer to the Don's Camp, there are a few choices:

There is the Best Western Gold Canyon Inn and Suites. Great hotel. Also there's the Gold Canyon Golf Resort, for your golfers. They gotta 24 hr front desk, etc. Very nice place.

I also believe you can stay at the Kings Ranch. They used to have a resort there, but I'm not sure if it's still in operation.

Here are the phone numbers:

Best Western Apache Junction: (480) 982-9200

Super 8: (480) 288-8888

Best Western Gold Canyon Inn & Suites: (480) 671-6000

Golf Canyon Golf Resort: (480) 982-9090

Kings Ranch Gold Canyon's Rnch: (480) 983-0423

Randy,

I will be there, as long as no one retracts my invitation. ;)  Hopefully, I will still be able to find one or two friends there.  If bowman shows up......he will get his first cup of coffee.
I will set up a pretty nice camp but will move to the Big Ramada when the dance gets started.

Hope the Rendezvous gets life and becomes a bigger and better event each year.  Not that it will ever be better than that first year at Twin Buttes.  Where were ya??? Grin

Take care,

Joe

As I said, this Rendevous is WELCOME TO ALL. If Bowman wants to come, and keeps it family friendly, then he is welcome to do so.
You are also welcome to come if you wish, and keep it family friendly.

Bowman,

I believe we had around 35 folks there.  I will be happy to get you a cup of coffee if you show up.  The Don's have nothing to do with this event.  They were generous enough to let us use their camp at no cost last year, and I assume that's the setup this year.  I have nothing to do with putting this years event together but the folks that are, seem to be doing a really fine job.

Not sure what "your old cock" was in, but I might have to check my schedule and see if I can make a trip out there - it sounds like it might be a fun way to be introduced to LDM hunting Smiley

While I believe there will be some "old timers" that will make their first appearance at a Dutch Hunters Rendezvous, what would be even better would be to see a lot of first timers to the LDM search.

For me, Dutch Hunters also include those who seek any of the other treasures which, legend has it, are hidden in the Superstition Mountains.  That covers a lot of ground in those mountains.  There will be folks there who can discuss them all.  In addition, you will find the general knowledge of the history of treasure hunting and the Southwest to be astounding.

Hope to meet a lot of "newbies" there.

About the speakers, well that list is really tight lipped right now, so I'm afraid I can't release it. I will be happy to say that this event should NOT BE MISSED. There are going to be some absolutely great people attending, and a lot of questions can be answered if you show up!

Regarding the location, here  you go. If you have any trouble with this, please let me know and I will guide you in the "Wright" direction  ;) Cheesy Cheesy Once you get near the camp site, there will be signs guiding your way. The gate will be opened early Friday morning and we will have someone there all weekend for assistance with anything you might need.

Bob,
Great!! It costs nothing to camp. All you need is food/drink and camping provisions for yourself. Joe's wife Carol always cooks quite a meal and is more than willing to share with others, so if someone has no food we will make sure they are taken care of, one way or another.

About getting there, well you will take Hwy 60 to the East until you reach the Gold Canyon area. You will then make a left onto Peralta road. There will be a brown sign on the right side to signal the turn, with a "hiking" symbol on it. The turn is really soon after the sign, so be prepared to brake quickly. Follow this road about 7 miles (it will turn to dirt), keeping to the left at the split, and you will see signs for the left turn that goes into the camp area.

I also posted map directions earlier in this thread. When it gets closer to the time I will probably post photos or something of the actual turn offs. The place is really easy to find.

If anyone would like to look it up, just search how to get to the "Lost Dutchman Mine" trail head in the Superstitions, close to the Peralta trail head. That is where the camp entrance is.

Sincerely,
Randy Wright

Also, this year we are doing something extra for all the visitors. This was posted by "Aurum" on another forum about what we are doing:

--
This year participants are asked to bring along a photo of themselves and a short outline of their interests and adventures in the mountains. Greg Davis of the Superstition Mountain Historical Society has a wonderful collection of early Dutch Hunters and their photo's, and in some cases, their entire collections which were donated to the SMHS Museum. But the list of contemporary Dutch hunters is sparse and Greg would like to put together a who's who of contemporary Dutch hunters. Too often, Dutchman enthusiasts will pass on and their stories, adventures and work are lost to future generations of enthusiasts. No one has to give away their secrets, it's just an opportunity for those who would like, to have themselves added to the list of those who have pursued the legend. The likes of Brownie Holmes, Clay Worst, Al Reser, John Spangler, Richard Peck, Walter Gassler, Adolph Ruth, Milton Rose, Roy Bradford, Chuck Aylor, Abe Reed and many, many others, are in the SMHS collection. One couldn't place themselves in better company than those men.

So take some time, round up a photograph of yourself and any other photo's you might want to bring along, write out a short bio or outline of your interests and research, and bring it with you to the Rendezvous. Greg and I will be there to document everything and see it gets filed properly with the SMHS Museum collection. Be sure to clearly label any photo's you bring and keep in mind, photo's cannot be returned so have copies made ahead of time.

Everyone and their families are welcome. If you can't make this years event because of schedule conflicts, distance, or health, please consider gathering together your information and mailing it to Greg in care of the SMHS Museum.
Greg's address will be posted as the event date gets nearer. I would like to see a roll call list of all Dutch Hunters and Stone Map enthusiasts this year whether you can attend or not.

Sincerely,
Randy Wright

Anyone with an interest in the Lost Dutchman Mine or the Superstition Mountains should make every effort to make the event.  You will all be welcome.

Hope to see you there,

Well, I've looked at it every which way over the last week and I just don't think I can make it to the rendevousz in Arizona this year.  By the time I factor in plane tickets, rental car, hotel and a little spending $ I just don't think I have the funds to do it.

I don't feel too terribly bad about it as I'm in the very infancy of getting acquainted with the legends and facts of the LDM and really would have nothing to offer other than a curious ear.  On the other hand, it would have been a real pleasure to have met those of you who'll be there and get a firsthand look at the desert and the Superstition Mountains - neither of which I've ever seen.

Please take plenty of photos and post them here so I get a chance to match faces with names for next year.  Hopefully by then I'll be a little more versed in the LDM and will be able to follow along with the stories better.

I'll be able to plan better next year.  Have fun everyone and again, make sure to take pictures and let those of us who can't make it know how it all went!

i stoped to catch my breath and set on a rock and looked up only to see what i believe is one of the most beautful places on earth . i dont care if anyone ever finds the LDM . but to go into those mts and not get the chance to set back a few mintues and just take a good look at the art of god's hand would be selfish ....if you cant get there this year ,thats just our world fighting to hold you in .... but when you see the beauty of these mt's nothing can hold that in .. they are breath takeing and even if i never find anything more then the will to seek my own dreams i have found the most valueable thing i can out there ...

many will go out there and say rocks and desert a waste land ..
i only see the art of god and mother nature at their best ....

no matter what you do in your life nothing well move your soul as much as these mt can ...

Well, I've looked at it every which way over the last week and I just don't think I can make it to the rendevousz in Arizona this year.

Sad Well I'm sad you won't make it, but I can assure you there will be a full report after the event, complete with tons of photos!

2007 Dutch Hunters Rendezvous

Tentative Schedule

Friday A.M.

Gates open at the Dons camp

A number of guests have asked for Thursday evening access. I am taking the time and effort to make sure the gates are unlocked Friday morning and earlier arrivals will have to contact me for information and availability. I have no problem opening the gates Thur night, but will need an appointment of sorts.

2PM Quarter Circle U tour

We will meet at 2PM at the Main Ramada area. The ranch is celebrating it’s 130 anniversary from when Jack Minor established it. Howard Hornick is our host and will be receiving a cattle shipment that day. We would like to have a group photo at the Boardhouse for the archives if possible. The McCullough family will be stopping by and riding out to the Ranch with us. Nancy McCullough is the daughter of Bill Barkley and Grand daughter of Tex Barkley.

6PM Author Jack San Felice at the main Ramada campfire

Having Jack out again this year is a treat. He is the author of “Treasure Trails of the Superstitions” and the excellent “When Silver Was King” as well as a number of articles published in the Superstion Mountain Journal.

Saturday A.M.

9AM Hike to Dacite cliffs mine w/ Greg Davis

This hike will take you to the lower mine area, the Indian cave, Carney springs, the pictoglyph site and the upper Dacite mines. The longer hike is more difficult and requires some climbing.

Noon short hike return

3PM Long hike return

It is suggested that participants bring head netting and flashlights for the hike.

6PM main Ramada campfire Open discussion

If you are bringing Horses please camp at the upper camp area above the amphitheatre. Lower camp areas are first come, first serve until they are full. Restrooms are available in the lower camp area for both Men and Women. Open fires only in the designated areas.

Anyone looking to have group discussions or an alternative hike throughout the weekend may post them at the main Ramada for any times that are open. We encourage everyone’s involvement and at the same time encourage you to follow through with your own plans and ideas. As with the forums most of us are a part of are run through the Dutch Hunting community, this weekend is organized and run through all our joint efforts as a whole.

As a reminder there is no water at the camp, you must bring your own and all campfires must be self contained as per the wilderness area rules and regulations. The camp has adjacent access to the Lost Dutchman, Peralta and Barks canyon trailheads.

Sincerely,
Randy Wright

Thanks Randy.  We are looking forward to seeing you again.  Some of the members here have decided to make the trip and attend the Rendezvous.  Hope to shake lots of new hands as well as old ones next week.  Not many replies to my food offer, but we will make enough for fifteen or sixteen people.....just in case. Smiley

See you there,

Joe

OD,

I look forward to meeting you, as well as Cubfan, next week.  I will have stew with Garlic Toast Friday night and Italian Sausage gravy with biscuits for Sat. morning.  There will also be coffee and plenty of bottled water at my trailer for any who might forget.

For those of you who are "on the edge" about attending:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

All,

I recently responded to a friend's reluctance to attend this years Rendezvous with this email:

That's an interesting outlook and statement about the Dutch Hunting community. As someone who has been the target of many
"hatchet job(s)" and personal attacks for a number of years now, I think I'm in a unique position to understand your reluctance to attend.
That's one of the major reasons I started the Rendezvous.

I offered to shake everyone's hand at last year's Rendezvous and I will make the same offer this year, hoping I will receive a positive response. That is the very essence of a Rendezvous. People setting their petty wars aside and looking for common ground.

While we think we know our friends, we may miss ever seeing the side they can display when confronted with imagined or real slights by others. That often coalesces into a lifetime of hate. I hope to break that cycle between myself, Peter, and others at the Rendezvous. That will not erase the things that have passed between us, but it might help us understand how it all came to this point.

Wherever we go in this life, we will meet strong personalities with strong opinions. When two or more of them meet in the same time and space, conflicts are the usual outcome. If you look back at the history of Rendezvous' in this country, you will see that those conflicts were set aside for the good of the events.

You can either choose to be part of these historical gatherings or not. If you choose to not be there, it will be our loss.....as well as your own. Many of your friends will be there, gathered around a campfire and swapping lies. I can't imagine how you would miss it. Many of my friends will be there. There is no way I would give serious consideration to not being there with them.

Others are also on the fence about this years Rendezvous. I intend to post this message, with a few minor changes, on the LDM Forum as well as the Treasure Net Forum.

Carolyn and I look forward to seeing you there.

Take care,

Joe

I will also have an extra sleeping bag, a small tent and a folding cot, if anyone needs it.

It didn't end until Sunday and of the folks on TNet who I know post here, I know two are in the middle of travelling home (myself included) and 1 is very likely tired from organizing the event, cleaning up after and the hike we took this morning/afternoon.  By the way djui, I'm more tired today than I was afer yesterday's hike and I definitely got a little too much sun - noticed that when I tried to wash my face at Walmart before I left :-).

I had a fantastic time, met an assortment of really really nice folks who could and in many cases HAVE filled books with the history of their searches.

BB - before I get on the plane, I have to tell you that the sheer amount of experience hiking and searching in those mountains as well aslmost limitless resources and research done by just the folks who attended the rendevouz was phenomenal to say the least.  You may or may not be onto something with your research, but after my experience the last few days, I would be more than very surprised if the 40 sites you plan to search haven't already been physically investigated.  In fact I don't believe it's a significant stretch of the imagination to say that > 99% of the Superstition Mountains has had human contact in the last 50 years.  There is likely still plenty of things to find out there, but if so, they are hidden in such a way that it will take a significant effort to locate them - whether that be digging, some type of ground penetrating radar or otherwise.

I'll post pictures and more tomorrow after a good long soak in the hot tub!!!

i agree ,led climbing gear and a lot of skill . a good navigational insight and a lot of hard work ... its not a matter of digging its a matter of what you dont see . and that has very little to do with what you do see ...you can set on a rock and look the area over for a hour and think you see 95%
move 20ft away and start all over again lol ..... i noted this the frist time i went .... the secound time i wanted to locate a given area , and then i found out the area that i wanted to see was over 1 1/2 miles away . so .you could send a life time out there and think you had seen everything . and not even see 10% ....it only take .001 to miss the find completly ...

i am glad everyone had a good time .. rest and let us see those pictures when you can ...

Someone told a story of how they got to an area once where they had to inch along a narrow edge sideways while hanging onto another small ledge above to try to get to what appeared to be an opening of some sort.

As that person got closer to it, they had that exciting feeling of possibly being the first person to ever reach that spot as it was inches away from falling to your death and was not only not easy to reach, but not easy to see that anything might be there anyways.

When he reached it and finally got a chance to see into the area, he saw a cigarette butt and some cans!

Taking a long shower and probably a nap - couldn't sleep on the plane last night and I'm mighty tired - will post pictures later tonight.

Thom,

Really sorry you couldn't make it to the Rendezvous.  Maybe next year.

Randy, Wayne and Greg Davis really did a great job of organizing the event this year.  My personal thanks to each of them.

For some reason Doug, who found the location, did not make it back.  I hope he is OK.

Already looking forward to next years meet.

Great pictures, Fan, but for those of us unable to attend, where are the people faces?

By the way, are the Cubbies going to sign Arod?

Great pictures, Fan, but for those of us unable to attend, where are the people faces?

By the way, are the Cubbies going to sign Arod?

Second question first...

I doubt it - they have to finalize the purchase of the organization before any kind of budget can be decided.  In my opinion, the only way they'll spend that kind of money is if Mark Cuban ends up being the buyer and I think the odds of that are slim to none unfortunately  Sad

He's probably the best player of this era, but even at that, one hitter won't turn the Cubs into a championship team and a $30 million/year for 10 years would really put them into a bind to spend money on the rest of what would be needed.

In regards to your first question...  I have a few pictures of the group, but I don't take many "people" photos for some reason (I never do).  Besides that, I would be uncomfortable naming any names without the person in the picture OK'ing it.

I know other folks took way more people photos, so I'll bet they post them soon.  We had lots of people there that's for sure.  Last count was somewhere around 60-75.

No BB - Clay was not there.  We had noted authors, an exceptional historian as well as actual LDM hunters such as Ron Feldman.

i saw ron in the pics .. i would have like to talk to ron . more then clay .. let me explan why . ron took alot of flack from digging up that spring from what i herd . but note . he tryed to find something and kept to his guns and did try to make a recovery .... that i respect ....if found anything had little to do with the brass to go and look ...but after working for my permits i know what and why Ron had to do a lot to get his permits to try ..that takes more then most of you know ...

but yes i would have to say talking to Ron would have been worth the trip if it was me ....

Posted this on the LDM Forum, and just wanted to make sure everyone understands about the CD that will be put together of the Rendezvous'. It would be nice to have everyone's pictures, but the CD will be put together with what we have and whatever we get.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Gary,

Hope all is well with you and the wife.

I am hoping to put together one CD of all three Rendezvous'. If everyone will send me a CD of their pictures of this years event, I will send them to David Leach, who has said he will put them together.

Once I get the finished product from Dave, I will mail them to whoever wants one. Send them to:

Joe Ribaudo
2125 McCulloch Blvd. Ste. B
Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403

There were three planned speakers: Jack San Felice, Harry, from "Team Fever" and the Ranger from the local arm of the Arizona Rangers.

Others (unplanned) got up and gave short talks as well. My personal opinion was that it was a roaring success. Randy, Wayne and Greg did a great job. There were small gatherings as well as the planned meets at the Big Ramada.

Questions were asked, and answers came from every direction possible.

I don't know how free Greg will be with his recordings, but I believe each of the talks was fully recorded. Perhaps he can be persuaded to compile all three years into one CD and send them to those who request them.

I doubt he would have much trouble getting the money to convert them to CD. I am offering my share right now, and knowing Greg does not have much time for such things, I would also mail them out.

Once again, anyone who does not want their picture of such a CD, will need to say so. Your wishes will be honored.

Paul came from New Hampshire, Roger and Wendell came from Texas, Dave Leach from New Mexico and others also travelled a great distance to attend. You need to start making plans for next years Rendezvous...Now.

Really sorry you and Carol were unable to attend.

Take care,

Joe

Joe,
I haven't heard directly from Doug. I have heard round about that he had a tierod break and spent the major portion of his trip getting that fixed at the dealership.
He was pretty steamed about the trip from what I understand.
He will call me when he has cooled off enough to talk, and fill me in.

Figured you all would apreciate knowing he is OK.

CJ,
Just got around to the forum after catching up on teaching and r& r in Vegas with my wife.  Grin

Great pics of the rendezvous both this year and last.

Sorry to have missed out on the first round of scheduled events but did manage to go with Randy and cubfan up to see the mine by the trailhead. "5 minutes" he says. At least a half hour later we made it there. Just as the sun set and the Indian chanting from below started. It was almost dark when we got to the mine. I'm a bit out of shape, and need a few rest stops on the climb .  Angry  Huh  Cry

Randy,

Your picture of the "hole" looks pretty good. I haven't even taken time to go through the ones I took. I will check them out and dispatch any that I think you and/or cj may want for the "collection" CD.

Hi Jim - you missed it this year as it was the last few days of October.  It's almost a guarantee that there'll be another one next year around that same though if I was a betting man.

I was looking back at some of the old treasure legends posts and I saw where the blindwoman claims she found the lost Dutchman mine and Tayopa mine. This was about a year ago. What happened?
