Another sunny Montana day… Wingman Tony and I decided to take our two loves one this trip!  That’s right… Medal Detectors and Harleys… we packed all our stuff on my bike and put on about fifty layers of clothes…

We headed out before the sun came up – and promptly froze our tails off… the speeds were kept to below 50mph which kept the temps at about 0 - 5 degrees because of the wind chill at 50 mph.

Do not try this at home!  We are professionals!

Our first stop was for some much needed hot coffee about the same time the sun came up… it had warmed to a sweltering 26 degrees without the wind chill…

1.JPG

Arriving at the button fields we unpacked and assembled the detectors…

2.JPG

The first find was a first for either of us! Tony found a trigger, but we don’t know what it’s from… just that we think it’s a pistol trigger…

3.JPG

Then true to form and leaving me in the dust Tony dug the first eagle button for the day…

4.JPG

Tony detecting in a cloudless Big Sky country… Priceless!

5.JPG

I found the next eagle button… cuff sized… awesome!

6.JPG

Here I am enjoying the moment… it had warmed up nicely… and I sunburned my head!

7.JPG

After tons of nails and crape’… I dug my first .50-70 shell…

8.JPG

Tony’s second eagle button… in three pieces…

9.JPG

I followed with a great knapsack hook… not a common dig here…

10.JPG

Here are the rest of my finds…

Part 2 -

This lead chunk weighs in at about three pounds… and is stamped with “THE RAYMOND TRA - - - ?”  Pretty cool…

13.JPG

After a great day in the field we mounted our trusty steeds for a warm and fantastic ride home… there’s no better way to spend the day!

14.JPG

As always… thanks for looking!

Now that's a new way to get to a site.  Great hunt.  I was in Montana back in June.  Beautiful!

Nice lookin Hogs!  Even prettier Eagle Buttons!!!!!! ;)  That knapsack hook isn't toooo shabby either!  Great digs my friend.  Thanks for the pics.  That lead piece is VERY interesting.  Over here, a lead piece that BIG would be a sabot off of a shell.  Would definitely be interested in what that is.  The trigger was a great find as well.  That field is a very lucrative spot Jim.  Good job buddy!!! ;) ;) ;)

Fantastic post, Jim.  As Nick stated in his post...thanks for the sharing the adventures of Montana Jim & Wingman Tony.  What a day, a cold ride, cool finds couldn't ask for anything better.  Man, you look zesty in your chaps!!  I'll have to tell you of my long ride in the freezing weather...6 hrs.  Warmed up by leaning on deli counters and using the blowers in the restrooms.  Anyway, look what I found searching the www...

Looks like you two had yet another FANTASTIC day.  So...how many eagle buttons are we pushing now?  150?

I see you've cloned yourself so that you can hunt twice as much ground.  EXCELLENT idea!  I wish I had thought of this earlier.  I coulda used the help locating some old house sites by myself earlier this year.  Only problem is that you'd have to kill off the clone after the hunt to nab his finds  Grin

Cheers,

I agree with Jim, Kirk and Zoy--on all accounts (including the breaking of the detectors across your heads LOL!)  Anyhow, YES you guys need to carry your camera with you--I want to see action shots of you dudes hunting, and I'm sure you'll want to photograph the moment when ya start to pull more coppas out of that tavern (early LC is still my prediction--remember?).

Yes, KirkPA and I have been talking about bringing the "good" camera to our sites.  My only concern is exposing the camera to really cold temperatures.  Usually, when we start detecting, we don't stop for about 6 hours, so the camera would be sitting off to the side of the field getting all cold and that kind of stuff.

Doesnt affect it at all....I hunt in extreme cold weather  and always take the camera. Have hunted in 20 below and taken pics outside in much colder with extreme wind chills . Dont worry about it .The new digitals are amazing ....Lens is covered until you turn it on so pics turn out fine. Carry it on a strap around your neck and put it inside your shirt.
Cant wait to see  the pics of your digging sites .

zoy - yer killin me.   Cheesy

Between Tony and I we have 45 years of cop experience... sherrif's department and military... it smart of you to recognize age and experience over youth and brawn.

Actually... I wish I had my youth back... just a little...

It really was a great day of detectin... you guys need to be posting more pics of you in the fields!

I am probably going to get a carrying case for the camera prior to the weekend.  Therefore, get ready for some KirkPA and zoyboy adventures to be featured on tnet in the next few weeks.

Those early PA settlers did too much and that is why coppas are found in abundance!

The Three Datectateers will miles to find the Colonial "stuff"!

KirkKyleChris (KKC) and to those long-forgotten, coppa-dropping settlers!
So many colonial sites to hunt....so little time.

Regards,

Buckleboy
I agree Zoy.  We all want to see more pics of you and Kirk and Paco in action.   And by the way.  Great post Montana Jim.! Grin

I've found only one period coin - an 1877 seated dime.

Mittens are way warmer than gloves...

It's true...

In gloves...Body heat is "SEPERATED" by the finger thingies....In Mittens Body heat is "COMPOUNDED"...Cuz the fingers are living together and happily ever after in their warm cozy home...

While very true... it's hard to brake and shift with mittens. It takes two hands and two feet to fly on a bike... the dexterity is required.
