There Are No Sharks Here!

Detector used: Fisher CZ-20, Ace 250, BH 505, MP3 Digital

« on: Oct 17, 2007, 04:40:07 PM »

I have been waiting all year to write this post! After 28 trips to The Shark Pit this season I finally found some GOLD!! It looks like a cigar cutter but the cutter hole is more like the size of a cigarette?? Did they cut cigarettes back in the day? Well what ever it's for, it's marked 14k & has the initials "Z. J. N." on the back. When I went to the Pit today I was thinking this might be my last trip there this season because these 70 & 80 degree days are sure to end fast. This would have been the first season that I did not find any gold there. I had given up hope so this was a nice surprise! Shocked
I also found a baby doll leg, whats left of a battery, a fancy hair pin, a 22 cal shell, 7 buffalo & 4 V nickels, 4 cookie coins, 15 sharks teeth (one is real nice. Guess which one. Grin) ,4 stingRay teeth, 1 inner ear bone, 1 disc bone & other misc. things.
Thanks for looking!!!!!

The cutter could possibly be for Cheroots, which weren't much bigger than a cigarette!

Nice hunk 'o gold there. I don't think the hole has to be that big, you're just cutting a tad bit of the tip off to make it easier to puff on.

Yea, that big tooth is awesome. A 20.00 dollar one for sure.

I bet you have more buffs and v nickels than anyone I know.
Good work

how cool is that!? Shocked Shocked that is a major score rob! i have never heard of anyone cutting cigarettes but i used to smoke cigars and i know that certain cigars have a taper to them that a cutter such as this would work with. at any rate its one of the coolest things i think i have seen come from the sharkpit and that is saying something! awesome stuff!

That is one cool gold find! Way to go. I think I'd rather have that over a gold ring, just because it's such an odd piece.
Congrats on all your finds. Very nice.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I have to admit that I have never heard of a "Cheroot" so I looked it up on Wikipedia & this is what it said.
The Cheroot or Stogie is a cylindrical cigar with both ends clipped during manufacture. Since cheroots do not taper, they are inexpensive to roll mechanically, and their low cost makes them particularly popular.

So since it's says they are clipped during manufacture I am starting to think it is for a regular cigar & just clips the tip to make a perfect opening like Kas said.

Nice hunk 'o gold there. I don't think the hole has to be that big, you're just cutting a tad bit of the tip off to make it easier to puff on.

Thanks Kas! My all time grand totals on the nickels as of now are 158 V's & 149 Buffalo's!  ;)

As usual great post and congratulations on the gold find.  Looks like the season is slowly coming to an end for the pit.  What will you do with all that spare time??? lol.  I am sure you have options in mind.  Again, great post.

Wow, really interesting gold find Rob!  The doll leg was probably left behind after the shark attack on the doll....which also explains why all those shark teeth fell out.    Grin

That’s a fantastic find. I think it’s a cigar cutter too, why would they make a Gold cutter for a cheep stooge, lol.

Plus, I find that most of my gold finds are smaller and thinner than the same comparable item made from a lesser metal.

Your other finds are primo too, who wouldn’t want all those buffs, one of my favorite coins.

 HH and thanks for sharing.
