« on: Oct 29, 2007, 07:48:32 AM »

Well the Shark Pit is now closed for the season. Cry  Over all it was a good year for me out there. I got to hunt there 28 time this year! This thread represents just my last 14 trips there. It's gonna be a long one so hang on! I will show grand totals for everything at the end!

For the story of The Shark Pit click here! http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,42179.new.html

Lets get started with the many pictures I have to show you all!

The first picture is of some of the better finds from the last 14 trips. There is a lion's head ring with stones in his mouth & eyes, 2 other brass rings, the 14k gold cigar cutter that I found on the last trip of the season, a Egyptian FOB, another ribbon FOB with a heart, the 1913 punch out coin button, and other misc. pins, cuff links and other neat stuff!

The next pictures shows a rooster head, part of an Esterbrook Mammoth Falcon pen Pat. dated 1877, 3 clay marbles, a toy horse, some beads, a toy whistle, a hoop ear ring, a baby doll leg, a small rock that looks like a shoe, 2 parts of chocolate tongs and other misc. stuff!

The next picture shows a old coin bank, a brass lid, a hinge and some fancy brass parts to some thing!

Next we have a parts of a few old pocket watches and a clock.

This next picture shows some of the many bullet shells I find out there, some fishing weights, a pocket knife, a hose clamp Pat. dated 6/20/1989 and other misc. things!

The next pic. shows some of the coins, tokens and buttons I find out there!

This picture shows some of the many V & Buffalo nickles I find out there!

And this picture shows some of the many Cookie coins I have found at The Pit!

The next pic. shows a few batteries, carbon light sticks, shoe heel plate and other stuff!

This picture shows some of the many safety, straight & button back pins!

And this picture will quickly remind you why this place is called The Shark Pit! Cheesy

Now Scroll down to see the rest of this thread!! I told you it would be a long one! ;)

I always look forward to seeing your next post and your finds.  It's always so nice to have a dependable spot to mine and hunt at.  You have a very impressive collection of different items from the shark pit.  I would imagine one special day that your hitting that area will pay off nicely for you.  Thanks for sharing the photos of your finds.

Impressive totals.  Lots of stuff that comes out looking good.  Too bad the silver is so beat(cookies).

How do you store and organize all the stuff ?  You must have a room just for the pit.  Smiley

I would say that is the spot of a life time but I think I have already said that three or for times.LOL Just amazing and breath taking. Do your buffs have dates on them or or they like most of the ones that I am finding with dates worn off? Let me know when you are going to start selling tickets to that place.   Grin

Just wanted to let you know that I always enjoy looking at your postings.  You definately find some good items at your honey hole.  I've been waiting, and no one has said anything, so thought that I would update you on a couple of your found items.  You have a couple of "bug" stick pins in your photos.  These items date from 1896, and are campaign items.  At that time, the United States was on the Gold Standard.  The Republicans, with William McKinley as their standard bearer was for "Sound Money" (gold), and the Democrats, with William J. Bryan wanted to help the farmers and the silver miners with having the currentcy backed by both gold and silver, at the ratio of 16 parts silver to one part gold.  During the campaign, you could tell who someone was for, by the color of the bug that they were wearing on their collars.  Both of your stickpins are missing their stones, but they are both gold, and would have been worn by a McKinley backer.  I've attached a photo of 3 items similar to yours, and these contain the stones.  Just thought you might like to know a little of the history on these items.
Keep up the good work, and I'll be looking forward to your next posting.

WOW Larry! I had no idea that's what those were about! I think you are right about them missing stones because I have found one (out of about 6) that still has a stone on it (see Pic.) & it does look like the ones in the picture you posted. I also have found a lose stone (see pic) that looks like it could have been from one of these bug pins. Thanks for telling me about these pins, Very Cool!! ;)
