After 8 months & hundreds in clad I finally found my first wilver coin!!! Grin

I was going through the motions at a nearby park the other night with my ace250 when I got a good coin signal.  When I dug the coin I put my light on it..  It was an 1876cc Seated Liberty Quarter!!!  I was surprised to say the least.  Shocked

It looks like I nicked the back of the coin w/ my shovel, which doesn't bother me, lesson learned i guess.  I would however like to attempt to remove the crud covering lady liberty on the front, I just think it would look nicer and I don't plan on selling it.  So if anyone has experience removing that build up on a silver coin I would appreciate any knowledge you could share.  thanks!

Hope to find more wilver and I will share it if I do. hh!

***UPDATED***

Decided the black crud covering the front was too much an eyesore, so I risked cleaning the coin.  I used electrolysis in an attempt to remove the build up.

I thought it turned out well and was happy with the results.  Here are some before/after pictures.

Thanks for looking. hh

That is a hard act to follow on finding the first silver.

Way to go. "CC" mints marks always seem so special for some reason.

Congrats

I'd be awfully careful cleaning that.  An 1876-CC quarter is worth a goodly sum, even if you're not going to sell it.  And yours looks to have a lot of nice detail.  Great find, by the way!

Now if it had been an 1876-CC 20-Cent piece, you'd be retired by now..  boo-coo thousands.

Great find. Some EZ coin cleaner will lift that right off without harming the coin. Just don't leave it in the solution for more than 15 seconds.  Keep on diggin'

Nice find,

Seated coins are rare to find. But a quarter is even rarer. I've got alot of barber quarters and seated dimes but no seated quarter yet.

thanks for the responses.  I found the coin about 6-7in down.  Didn't want to use any cleaners on it, so i went with electrolysis.

Great find.  Watch the electrolysis though, it may look cleaner, but it ruins the worth of the coin to any collector.  I made a dreadful mistake of doing electrolysis on an 1802 large cent I found.  It cleaned it alright--too good.  It ruined the naturally old look, you can see all the pitting on it and I probly destroyed the collector value of it.  Probly one of the worst mistakes I ever made with a find.  I will never do it again.  Let professionals clean any great finds like that!
