i always rejected them, and so does most others , point is, the gold coins and gold rings always point to "pull tab". soooooooooooo, i wil dig every, every, again, every pull tab reading i encounter"dig it all" , every day i go out untill i find gold. i will post up how many tabs i get, until i hit at least 10k something. after all gold is worth making a few holes, n filling them;) i dont get much time out now, but we all have time no? after all your reading this  Cheesy
p.s. if i find gold ill post up in the title above, found gold, then i hope u will read it. good luck all

Ok...where is the gold?  I tried running the Fisher F2 over my gold rings today and it consistently said they were nickels....when I ran it over my sterling silver ring it said it was a penny....never got a pull tab reading though.....well except when I found pull tabs!  lol

Pull tab to gold ratio will vary with the likelyhood of location to hold gold. I don't bother to run low tones in unlikely locales. But with an increase in likely hood like at beaches or playgrounds I will run low tones. other good locales is old homesteads, mountains where gold has been found before, Places that have yeilded allot of silver. These places that have already yeilded allot of silver indicates virgin soil and I will switch to include low tones after having cleaned most of the site. A gold coin is still on my want list after many years of this, but gold rings are pretty common, although not as common as I would like.

Years ago I kept detailed records that show I was getting a gold ring for every 1,000 pulltabs on average. Most of this was inland, with maybe 5% digging at the waters edge locations.

I wish they never invented the pull tab in the first place. Years back Coors came out with a push tab that was like a button you pushed down to open the beverage. I thought what a fantastic idea no more pull tabs some day and it worked perfectly; what happened it never caught on. The new pull tabs have me perplexed; You have to work at it to get it off and people still throw them around. Mindset? Piglets?

Ok here's a shot, I just started detecting about a month ago.  I have since dug 32 pull tabs, but like so many other newbs I started walking right over them when the X-70 showed a garbage number on the Target ID.  I haven't found any gold rings yet either, but since reading all of the posts, I have decided like chong to dig all signals that are solid in the pultab range.  I will try to let everyone know how it goes.

Awesome, with a newbie doing the challenge we'll have minimum number that has to be pretty close to accurate. No offense Keverett, just mean if you as a newbie find gold after say 500 tabs then we can expect a more experienced person to find gold at say 300 tabs.  Roll Eyes

I'll take a crack at it too and let you know what I find out. I don't get out very often but I'm determined to find gold. So I'm going to start digging all of the pull tab and nickel sounds as well as the higher end 14k gold sounds (which I haven't heard in the field yet). I've dug about 20 pull tabs so far but could have easily dug more the last time out. I got frustrated and decided to go to full discrimination so that I would only get signals on coins. After doing so I found one quarter and five bottle caps!  Roll Eyes

But I'm up for the challenge! I'll let you all know how it goes. Being a newbie I'm starting with a clean slate. I'm going to keep hitting the same site until I find something of value.

well with my ace 250 it took me 2 months  of dig it all going every week end for 2 -3 hours before (say 8 weekends at 3 hours --24 digging hours--god know how many tabs / trash items )---  finally I hit a tiny paper thin  kiddie ring "marked " 10  K mexico ---at a play ground area--it came in under foil  ( honestly wasn"t expecting gold I had found some change in the area and was cleaning up the trash stuff while  looking for coins ) --- gold is hard to find gotta dig lots of trash normally to get gold due to the overlap -between gold items  and trash items -conductivity wize  Wink

The second target I ever dug was a gold necklace.  The first was a penny.  So, it takes two times to find gold!  Of course I thought this detecting was going to be easy money.  I musta' dug for another year before I found a gold ring and it was at a beach!  I don't think you can do it this way!  Monty

i agree any gold will do, i dunno about the dust tho, we should say tiny pickers are the smallest, unless its a jar/container of dust. kev nice going man. hey monty, you just jumped in during the cycle, it took how many pull tabs later to find that second gold? yes, this approach will work good.

This will be tough to figure!   In my many years of detecting, I have found 80 gold rings. By all rights, and according to percentages of 1,000 tabs for every gold ring, I should have found somewhere in the vicinity of 80,000 tabs.  Now, I have definitely found many, many thousands of tabs, but I think location has much to do with the percentages.  I found many of those rings on ocean beaches during the winter months, without finding many tabs at all.  Other places(soft sand summer beaches) contain many tabs and one would be lucky to get a ring.

I also hate to find tabs, and that caused me to push my discrimination too high at times.  I would have long droughts between gold rings over the years.  Those winter beaches helped me get my ring numbers up.  In one 2 week period, I dug 14 of them, with almost no tabs.

location, location, location, and low discrimination.

Good luck!

Yep gonna have to rule out beach hunting for the simple fact that the Physics are such that there's no comparison between a Beach substrate vs say a clay soil substrate at your local park or school. The beach sand is in constant flux. Movement from wind water and other sources would skew any such numbers, not to mention the differences in densities of the two metals Gold and aluminum.

Great point MD!  To come to any kind of conclusions, one would need to keep seperate records for different areas.

I like the last two pics, too bad it doesn't represent an actual Gold to Pull tab ratio. That would be sweet because it looks to be maybe 100-200 pull tabs to each gold.  Roll Eyes Tongue Grin tongue3 thumbsup

I think were much more likely to find the ratio to be around 1500-2000 pull tabs per one gold.  Undecided

This is embarrassing but I knew I'd have to admit it sooner or later:

After I had my detector for about a week I found a gold ring! I was walking to the post office to mail my income tax check Cry and saw it on the side of the road. Smiley Just a 10k no biggie--but no detector either. Kinda weird.

I wonder how many pull tabs would be in a 26 acre park dating back to the mid 1800's Grin Would I be the " King of Pull Tabs " ? Grin

If I'm nugget shooting then I will get very few tabs. If I get a lot of tabs, then I will get very little gold in that area.

The question about how many tabs do you find before finding gold seems vague.

Ofcourse I'm referring to nuggets in the hills compared to gold jewelry. Big differents.

The whole concept of gold to pull tabs is skewed. If one is in an area where gold is lost more frequently then the ratio is low BUT if you dig every pull tab like me and have only found three gold rings in four years and thousands of pull tabs the ratio is super high. I know I can find the gold - all I've got to do is walk over with my detector but in has to be in the ground first. If gold doesn't get lost then no one will dig it up.

I hunted where there was a gold ring lost while working on heavey equipment, looked for two weeks no ring gaveup. A lot of welding, and metal work went on there.

Maybe if one of us can go back in time, and replace pull-tabs with gold, then we might stand a chance at finding a few rings. Grin

I decided to start digging nickel signals and up about a month ago and save the tabs to see how many I got before gold. Well, I started at a couple city parks and would hunt a couple hours at a time and come up with about 60 tabs each time alittle clad, but no gold! Then I started hunting a sports complex wich consists of 5 ball fields and each couple hour hunt I would dig maybe 5 tabs and 4 to 5 dollars in clad , and Ill take clad anyday over tabs! So 3rd or 4th hunt there I dug my first gold, and Ive probably got about 20 hours in at this place and so far about $30 in clad 3 silver rings (one plated), and 2 10kt gold rings! I figure ball fields are good cause every time a ball glove comes off, you never know it might take a ring with it. So far so good!!!!

My wife eye scored a 14k gold pendant on a walking path at a sports park. I still haven't found gold with a detector. I have found a silver toe ring though icon_thumright
