went to yard sale today got 13 sterling spoons for $2.00 so at $17.84 an oz. between 7-9 oz. carry the 9=a freaking good deal!!!!!!!   |

i just bought about 40 silver spoons from a salvation army for that same reason how do i know if its silver or just silver plated

they will usually be stamped sterling.sometimes they are antique so there is an added bonus,still worth the silver price and x-tra for antique .always consider that before scrapping. |

Sterling silver spoons will either be marked sterling ster stg 925 925/1000 950 950/1000 plated will either have plate somewhere on the back silverplate triple plated etc.. or A1 sometimes it won't even mention if it's plated or not..then unless it is a super old peice it will be plated |

I live in Central Maine, and at the jeweler in town Farmington, I was quoted 8.00 per ounce last week. Needless to say I didn't bite. Fee-bay still beats that price. Happy hunting out there. T.

is $17.71 / 31= $.57 per gram. I guess .925 comes into play, but I think there must be better offers. I am new at this so I may need some educating. FORTUNE FAVORS THE EDUCATED MIND!!

He explained to me that the silver refining is more expensive and the market was different from gold. I wasn't listening at that point, he lost me at less than 50 cents on the dollar for his spot offer and I think he knew it as he tailed off about the same time my ears turned off. LOL I probably should have given a real listen so I would be better educated. I should probably also mention this same jeweler has given me very fair, once I believe even over spot price on gold or my math was faulty when I walked into the place. T.

Yes, you are right. My day job is a bean counter so I always extend a decimal point or two.  1 troy ounce = 31.1 grams or 20 DWT (pennyweight - which some people use) so 1 oz at $17.71 = .569¢ per gram of fine (999) silver to find out sterling multiply by .925 = .526¢ per gram tford, my refinery charges 10% commission on silver so you would get .47¢ per gram. Remember a lot of silver makers do cheat so sterling could really be .900 or even .875 A lot of marked gold that I buy is almost always one half karat under the mark. (and by law that is OK so they take advantage of it) |

Is there good money in finding silver and selling it to refineries? Is there benefits in keeping antique sterling silver and selling it on ebay if its a specific brand, say if you just found a spoon but didn't have all the pieces in a set? I am just curious if this is something I can get into. I could always use extra money!

Is there good money in finding silver and selling it to refineries? Is there benefits in keeping antique sterling silver and selling it on ebay if its a specific brand, I bought an entire set of sterling from the early 1950's. It was never used. I tracked down the maker and pattern name and contacted a company that sells sterling to fill in missing pieces. There offer was less than melt. They are a major company and there selling prices reflect antique prices. I will not give their name because they make themselves sound like they are paying you a good price for antique silverware when most likely they just melt it down. I could do that and make more money. |
