Boldly go where no treasure hunter has gone before

Detector used: Ace 250 Big and Small coils

« on: May 02, 2008, 04:53:53 AM »

About a week ago my detector fritzed out...I had an Ace 250, but never purchased a coil cover for it. The coils were worn and cracked, and I tried in vain to fix them, but no luck. I finally bit the bullet, and ended up getting another Ace 250 with two coils, and the coil covers were thrown into the deal this time. Now, every time I swing that coil and scrape, or bump something I can grin, and keep smiling. I like the Ace, and dig most every signal with it. I went out for the first time yesterday with the new detector, and a good friend of mine. The weather was cool and sunny. After several hours of fruitless searching I hit on a dime signal. I didn't think much about it, but realized the value of being careful with a shovel. Another mentor of mine had taught me well! I found this at about 6 inches in very nice soil.....I didn't wipe it, and carefully wrapped it up in tissue, put it in the finger of a glove, and moved on. Later at home we washed it very carefully, and I brought out the red book. What a surprise! I wonder if I'll ever top it. The amazing thing.... I guess it's the first coin I found with the new detector and the only coin I found all day! HH

I added pictures after I put the dime in an ultrasonic cleaner with soap and water... no scrubbing, just the rinse after to take the soap off!

Hoo-wee, that is one beautiful Seated dime!!

I'm no expert, but VF and prob. worth $60+ is my guess.  And a lot more than 60 bucks' worth of fun finding it, eh?

WTG on your methods of carefultude in safeguarding that little beauty, too.

That will be very hard to top in the rarity and condition department.  My red book says 72,500 minted and $700 in VF, $1200 in EF.  I would say you paid for your detector in one day.  Super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Ace has 3 coils available, does big mean biggest? (12") or bigger than small(4.5") all metal, coin, jewlery, custom modes? Bongo

I use the biggest and the smallest of the three. At the time I had the 12" coil. I mostly hunt in all metal mode. If I'm in a heavy metal area I switch to a small coil. The machine works, and it really doesn't cost much, but like anything else it has limits, and you have to get to know it.

Wow !  Man that is a very fine coin, and one of the key dates to the series. Isn't it wonderful how nice

silver is coming out of the ground ?  It truly is a "noble"  metal . Enjoy your treasure , and thanks for sharing.

Wow, if you're only gonna dig one, I guess that's a good one to dig. And if you didn't wipe it, that dime should grade pretty good.

I noticed that no-one really utilizes all the signature space provided, so I figured to be REALLY original I would make up the longest signature that I could and probably just leave it as one big run on sentence because all that punctuation just takes up way too much space-HH.

No wipes, I havent really cleaned it (I'm too scared of even a micro scratch on it), Just a rinse.... There's a lot of detail in it, just about all the original details, with a pinch of circulation, and a dose of dirt for 150 years that you'll ever get out of a dime like that, and when you said if your gonna dig ya might as well dig that... you hit that one right on the nail head!

No slight intended to your fine coin.  I'm at work, and I don't have a Red Book here to see the criteria.  I just glanced at the PCGS site.

If your beauty-eh dime is worth 10x what I typed, I'm 10x happier for you!

[Returning to edit after returning to the PCGS site]

"Glanced" is accurate..  I have *no* flippin' idea what line I was reading back there, really.  I was "grading" your dime at VF-30 to 40, so on the CORRECT line (1844), that translates to "over a Grand".

And I beg that many pardons.  Like a thousand.

Shocked Cheesy thumbsup  I'll gues $700.00 minimum (VF in 2008 redbook)  That being the case,  I would love to see this coin on the banner.   Incredible find  and good thinking not to rub the dirt off of it in the field.  thumbsup icon_sunny

The coin will grade FINE & is valued around $35.00

you never hunt w/o a coil cover if you cherish
your metal detector

also NO COIN DEALER is going to give you as much
money for a DUG coin as they will for one thats been
in circulation

I never even knew you could have coil covers for a metal detector. I'm pretty new to "dirt fishing", and still have a lot to learn. As for the value, it's personal,  it's not about money, it is a hobby and I enjoy keeping it that way, I just like finding things that were lost and the opportunity to have them rediscovered and shared.

Steve

I'm a jeweler/artist, and an ultrasonic cleaner uses sound waves to remove debris from metal. It has a plastic basket that you set in a tank of soap and water, and then a timer switch. The one that I have is quite pricey. I don't recommend doing any cleaning on a coin unless you are certain of the outcome. Silver is nice, because it really doesn't corrode in the ground like copper/nickel, thus it's a lot easier to clean, and all you have to do is get the dirt off without scratching the surface...

For the record.  here is a picture of the S.L. dimes section of the 2008 Red book.   Look at the 1844 line.   Awesome!!!  Pays for the detector twice over...and the coil cover. Grin Wink Shocked

I went back and looked at your pics.  I still think it would fetch $1000, even if you wound up selling it on fleaBay (if you sold it at all).

We know I was looking at some wrong line, possibly on the wrong page even, when I came up with that $60 noise.
Being a page-bungler and non-expert, I still disagree most heartily with the "Fine" "$35" opinion.
