I am looking for information on this belt buckle. Found in coal mining camp in operation from 1897-1927. Thank you!

That is one HECK of a find! I've only ever seen ONE in person. It was in a museum.

It was a museum in Southwestern Virginia--part of a private "dug" collection of an old detectorist on "loan" to them... I don't have a clue as to value, but I'm looking. It should be worth at the very least as much as a similar condition common plate. -Buckleboy

Bobby my friend,
After about 6 hours of searching, I am not able to find a value. Personally I think you hit the jackpot regardless of value! Hope one of us find a match to it soon!

Bobby, Try the "Ask Mark Parker" column in Western & Easter Treasures or Q & A with Charles Harris in American Digger Magazine also ID's stuff. You can Email him a picture and description to: adpublisher@mindspring.com or snail mail him to: Can You ID, PO Box 126, Acworth, GA 30101. If these two can't help you I don't think anyone can. Eric

This plate is a Waist Belt Plate, Ohio Militia, Officer, ca. 1861-65 There were two versions of said plate. One is 50X81mm w/o keeper and the other is 50X80mm w/o keeper. They are both cast brass with an applied tongue. This information is taken from page 409 of the book titled American Military Belt Plates.

I have a hunch that this should be a BANNER find.
And I feel like it will be Quite Valuable in the monetary sense...

The Civil War Collector`s Price Guide, (Millennium Edition) published in 2000 only lists one Ohio Militia Belt Plate. It gives a value of $2975.00 in excavated condition. It also states that the same plate in nonexcavated condition is valued at $2475.00. I hope this is of some help to you.

I did find, someplace a few days ago, the lettered OVM (Ohio Volunteer Militia) Belt Plate priced in that range, but not the one pictured above.

Values for this plate— the Ohio state seal sword belt plate, not the OVM— are basically the same in the 10th Ed. (2003): excavated, $3,000+; nonexcavated, $2,500+.

Hmm. Just noticed the wide border and lack of a side loop/slot. This looks more like the c. 1875-1890 Ohio Militia state seal plate, as shown on p. 503 of O'Donnell & Campbell's American Military Belt Plates. Still a great find!

If it's late that would kill most of the value but make it easy to keep in your display.
No find has value until you sell anyway.

You really need to find out if this is a Civl War or Post Civil War buckle.... believe me it can really make a difference in price!!! If it is Civil War it could easily go for $2500+ I stronly suggest that you post a photo on the www.nvrha.com web site. You may get an invite to another web site called Civil War Fake Busters.... the fake busters deal in only CW relics and in either case one of these sites will be able to tell you for certain if it is CW or post CW!!! Please let us know the results of the post at these sites!!!
