Found this cross today, unfortunately it is cracked and about to break. I probably did it trying to get it out of the hard clay.

Oh my goodness, what a nice piece of trade jewelry.   Bent or broken, it's still an incredible find.   Great work, congrats.

Very nice relic, Scrounger!  I recently saw a large trade cross in a museum in Windsor, ONT. and could only imagine the thrill at finding one.  WTG  thumbsup

BANNER>>>BANNER<<<BANNER>>>BANNER<<<

Wonderful Find! I would really hunt your site well...it could have been a trading site......I found some interesting tidbits related to your piece....Pieces with R.C.'s mark are highly prized.

According to existing records, a huge volume of trade silver pieces was created each year. A partial list of Cruikshank's silver orders from the year 1801 shows in excess of 49,000 pieces produced, including 16,000 orders for small brooches, 5,000 for large brooches, and 3,000 for pairs of earbobs.

Information on the barter value of individual pieces—and on trade silver in general—is difficult to find, but the papers of Sir William Johnson, Albany, N.Y., 1891, cite some trading values. (Silver-to-pelt values differed according to trading post, so these values apply only to New York.) The papers list large silver armbands as the trade equivalent of four large beavers or bucks. Silver brooches were worth one raccoon each, large crosses (up to 5.5 in.) had a trade value of one small beaver or medium buck, and earbobs were worth one doe.

Thanks everybody! No idea how this ended up in the banner but thank you, what an honor. This site I am working was a Northwest Company post site that was established in 1794. It is right in a persons yard of their home, hope I don't wear out my welcome before I am done. I will say this about the silver I have found it is very thin and can be easily damaged. The cross is about as thick as construction paper, in todays world it would be laughed off as cheaply made. Here is this mornings stuff.                         Jim

Awesome find.  There is a member of our club that found 3, yes I said 3! Trade silver crosses at one site, plus a trade silver thimbal that was packed with 35 wampums in it.  He has many, many blue, red, white, pink beads they are as small as canary seeds.  The wampums ar tubular pieces of black coral with holes drilled throught the length of them.  He also has found some type of tool that has flint or chert laced onto either wood or bone handle with sinews.  These were all found in a huge firepit area where 5 to 6 foot of topsoil was removed for watermain replacement.  The area is in a county park near a canal that empties into the Detroit River, north of Lake Erie.  He was advised by Christies that the crosses he found are worth up to and maybe more than $50,000.00 each  They are Cruikshanks

I don't believe he ever posted it on our website, but if you go to http://www.greatlakesmetaldetecting.com  and search our monthly meeting, finds of the month, I think it may be in 2005 or 2006 photos, you may find pics of his case with the items pictured in it.

Also forgot to mention, the reason these particular crosses are so valuable is because of the style and pattern, that there were previously only 10 to have been known to exist.

My friend found one exactly like it a year or so ago, then last year he found four crosses with "RC" and "JO" marks.  You may have been misinformed about the price of such crosses.  A small "RC" cross, of about 1 & 1/4 inches will not get $50,000 at Christies.  I don't want to rain on your parade MNLineman, just speaking the facts.  It is a great find and deserves to be on the banner!!!
