I have been hunting the Shark Pit for 4 years now & my #1 goal has always been to find a gold coin there. WELL I JUST DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am still shaking & it's been an hour! I got out of the water so fast my legs cramped up on the way! I have not tried to clean it yet (any help?) I wanted to show you guys first! I had been out there for about 2 hours not really finding much when I got a light signal. It was way down in the thick mud & stuck to a crust rock on the face side. When I first saw it in my sifter I thought it was a cool token. Then I pulled it off the rock & saw the face & date (1881). Well me not really knowing coins that well, I thought it was a quarter. But then I said, Hey why is there no cookie crust on it & it's not silver? ?? It kinda looked copper??? Then it hit me!!!!! I was so scared I was going to lose it on the way out of the water I kept one hand on my pouch all the way to my truck! It's seems dumb to even show the other finds of the day! I just can't believe it!!! I remember when Lonewolfe found his gold coin next to a sidewalk a few years ago & I thought of how cool it would be to find one! Well today's the day!!!! Thanks for looking! I'm on my way to have a steak & a few beers!!! UPDATE Scroll down on page 2 to see my post with Before & After pictures after cleaning!

awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!!!!! What a great find! Savor this moment–you may never find another one again...but I'm hoping you will! I got faked out the other day. It was dusk, barely any light left, I was detecting a lot that went back to the turn of the century, and then I pulled up a coin...it was golden in color, stars circled the circumference, I got jittery...then I lightly rubbed off the dirt to see what I had found...a worthless no cash token. Why would it not be? Would you not think if you found a coin, you'd want it on the banner? Sounds a little like sour grapes to me.

Why would it not be? Would you not think if you found a coin, you'd want it on the banner? Sounds a little like sour grapes to me. I think you're reacting a little early on this, Fisher. Mastereagle's not asking if the find it good enough to be on the banner. He's asking that it be placed there.

We all know there's no such thing as a "hunted out" location. Let's stop using that phrase to describe a park out of which you just dug a pile of coins! Obviously that particular place wasn't "hunted out", right?

Simply outstanding I wonder if that coin came from one the cash registers you found the fragments of As for cleaning, I would lean towards electrolysis for removing stuck on bits of crust, just go slow, dipping it in for only 20 seconds at a time max. I did this with some silver coins I found. Gold should react similarly. HH, Donny

Congratulations!! Beautiful coin - I wouldn't do anything to try to clean it until your excitement wears down - too much chance that in your haste you might damage it. I think I'd just soak it in distilled water for the time being.
You're really got an amazing site to hunt there - it's always so much fun to see what neat things you locate there.
way to go!

Wow Big Congrats Rob.
You deserve it man. With all the great things that were coming up at that spot you were bound to hit a gold piece sooner or later. I'm hoping at some point I find a gold coin just for the thrill. That is priceless.
Oh by the way you don't even need to clean it. I'd put it in a ultrasonic jewlery cleaner for a few baths and that is it. Put it into a coin bezel and were it on a rope. I wear a 1893 Ten Dollar gold coin and love it.

Rob,
Just wanted to say, I've spent the past hour or so getting myself familiarized with your completely astonishing collection from the Pit... it's hard to imagine all of that coming from one place, but you've hit that place with tenacity, and it shows.
Interestingly, there is a place almost exactly like yours at the Pit back in my hometown of Port Arthur, Texas. It was called Pleasure Pier, and I believe it, too, was damaged beyond repair from storms. Sadly, however, most, if not all of the area was dredged to extend a ship channel from Sabine Lake into the Gulf. (If only I could figure out where all that dirt got carted off to!)
And that after seeing that amazing collection, it makes seeing that gold coin that much more special. It is every detectorist's dream (including mine) to find a gold coin in their lifetime, and I couldn't be happier for you!
I have not (yet!) had this experience myself, but every time I dig a target, it's in the back of my mind, and actually seeing someone find one gives it just that much more plausibility.
My warmest congratulations, and I look forward to seeing your next awe-inspiring finds!

I just meant is this a Banner worthy find?
I think any gold coin found with a detector should just be a automatic banner. They are very seldom found and it is a awesome find for anyone... congrats Tru dat!

I have not tried to clean it yet (any help?) I wanted to show you guys first!
First congratulations on finding what 99.9% of us treasure hunters dream of finding. The holy grail of finds...a gold coin. On the cleaning subject, think before you do it. Once it is cleaned it can't be undone. Sometimes it is better to leave it how it is. Put it in a display with a lot of the other excellent objects that you find at the pit. Last thing, wow, I had a feeling that you would find something like that sooner or later. All the other items that you pull out of there point to the correct time period and if there is one there may be more. I love reading your posts. Keep them coming. I wish I could find myself my own shark pit.

Wasn't this up in the banner earlier? Weird. I could have sworn I saw this guys coin in the banner. A detected gold coin is a mythological, mystical, magical thing that any treasure hunter would be totally stoked about finding. It is literally a dream come true for the lucky soul who manages to pull gold from the Earth. It's the reason we post here, buried gold. I absolutely LOVE seeing gold coins. Goldgoldgoldgoldgoldgold.

Your finds just got golden. Good for you. With all of the old coins that you have been taking out of that hole for the last 4 years, it was just a matter of time before you found one. Now, they will probably start coming at a much faster rate. WTG

The person you need to contact about cleaning advice is MT..JM (the guy who posted the SanFrancisco cache of double eagles). Many of them had rust spots and discolorations, and they turned out beautifully. Send him a PM. (See the cleaned-up photo in reply #16). A good many of his coins are Much worse in terms of crust and discoloration than yours. Find out his cleaning procedure. Here's the link: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,145244.0.htmlI would NOT use electrolysis on the coin! Since gold is so inert, there has to be something that will act on the discoloration from whatever the coin was laying beside, but not act on the gold itself. A chemist should be able to help you out with this... However, since that SF double eagle cache cleaned up so well, I'd say that the same cleaning method is the way to go. Regards, Buckleboy
