Posted Jun 09, 2008, 05:28:31 pm

On my way up to visit my brother in southern Wisconsin this past Friday, I spent 1-1/2 hours
metal detecting before my hunt was terminated Angry by the high winds and heavy rain. . .

When I found this, my initial thought was that it was a piece of scrap metal but when I saw the
the oxidized-copper patina, wishful thinking entered my mind that this may possibly be related
to the "copper culture" period in the Wisconsin/Michigan area.

I posted this in the "American Indian Artifacts" section of the forum and some members suggest
that this may be a copper celt. . . if it is, this will be my best find ever.

UPDATE:
Yesterday I received confirmation from two archeologists that this is
indeed a copper Celt (cold and/or hot hammered) that was likely made
and/or used sometime between 4,000 BC and 500AD.

Many thanks to everyone for your kind comments and suggestions.
(and yes, I'm still on cloud nine)

Two heart attacks in one week. . . first one, finding this Celt and the second one,
making the BANNER. . .  I am truly honored. This has been an exciting week and
It has meant a lot to me personally reading all the wonderful comments from everyone.

What would the value of that be in dollars?  just curious.

As far as dollar value? I'm really not sure.

During the last few days, I've had several conversations with the State Archeologist who has been
VERY helpful and would like to set up a future meeting with me at the site where the recovery was
made. . . I'll keep everyone posted as to what happens. . . hopefully, it will all be good.

Thanks again everyone!

Thanks Granny! Hope to see you & everyone this October!

Congrats on the banner, Mark! icon_sunny  You definitely deserved it! thumbsup

Kyle

Thanks Kyle

Congratulations on the banner and your authentication!   Grin

Definitely a museum quality piece, make sure you document exactly where it was found with photos and GPS for those in the field of science, who will undoubtedly want this information.

Did you weigh it?

HH, Mark  thumbsup

I spoke with the State Archie this morning and he plans on meeting me out there sometime in the next several weeks. . . right now he's been busy at other sites with all the flooding that's occurred. Oh, the weight. . . I got to do that tomorrow; Thanks for reminding me.

AWESOME! Speechless.............. Warning!  WARNING!!  WARNNNNINNNNGG!  Be VERY leery of showing any AR-KEELHAUL-logist where you found that, you will be instantly banned forever from hunting there again.  I would be surprised if they didn't try to confiscate it from you...........Not

He seems very cool about this entire situation. . . and as to whether I would be allowed back for any future searches in this area, well, I'll have to cross that bridge when I get to it Smiley. . . good question though.

Thanks everyone,
watercolor

Awesome find!

That's one thing WI has going for it--the best odds of the oldest metal finds in the U.S.

Not to ask you to give anything away but what kind of site was that found at?  Riverbank or otherwise near water?

I found it probably 30-meters from a stream. . . as to whether that stream was there 3,000 years ago. . . Huh

I found one almost exactly like that in the Upper Penninsula of michigan.

Ryaan, that is awesome!!. . . maybe I should call the one I found "Mini Me" Cheesy
I enjoyed seeing that.

Take care,

Most excellent relic, watercolor!  WTG!  thumbsup

It's amazing how the older Native American relics can make any coin look relatively "young."  My daughter found a knife blade last spring helping me pick rocks from a new garden.  Via pics on the Internet, I was told by an archeologist it was likely around 8,000 years old.  Beats any of my old coins by quite a few thousand years. Wink

Keep digging!

Thanks for your comments. . . when I found this piece, it took awhile for me to realize
what this really was. After I got home a few days later, I got some valuable research leads from
some TNet members here on the forum (this TNet forum is a WEALTH of knowledge thumbsup)

July 8th, is the big day. . .

I'm meeting the State Archeologist at the site (per his request) where I found this Celt so I guess it
could be an interesting day. . . but, I'll still remain optimistic Smiley

I'll be taking my camera with so if the weather cooperates (rain is forecast), I'll take some pics that I can post
when I get back the next day.

Thanks again for all your kind words & support,
watercolor

I would make sure I pounded that area really well before I let the archaeologists know the location.  They'll most definitely try to find a way to not let you come back.  I wonder if you were willing to sell it if a museum would buy it from you???  Geez I wonder how much that thing is worth?
