The western Indian Wars not your thing?

Nice stuff Jim. It is a neat grouping. The early and gaudy Victorian jewelry appearing with the military stuff is interesting. Do you think it was an officers wife or a floozy?

Maybe an officer's wife... or, possibly a farmers wife in the subsequent years... there are some other possibilities that I'm sure do NOT include floozies. I've found other opulent junque there too and I've always assumed officer's wives or farmer's family. The area holds some dump finds as well through he 1930s or so (farm/house dump) as the land has been worked a few times in the last 130ish years.

The weather was agreeable... 70s or so.  No skeeters till about 9:30pm.  I only hunted from about 6:00 to 8:00 and then was accousted by a passerbyr (rare in this area) who wanted to chat about detecting and indian relics.  He was a pleasent conversationist and I enjoyed the chat - which unfortunetly lasted over an hour.  The sun started to drop around 9:30 pm and I headed home...

Next time I'll get a whole day in.

The eagle button was not a disappointment, and the suspender/garter clamp was an eyeball find!

You know that generally I'm reluctant to talk about my hunting spots - but...

While "ladies" being around soldiers was common, this may not be true in this case, I'm not sure how they would have been recieved here.  The officers (all white) brought the wives, and the single soldiers were mostly if not all Buffalo Soldiers - and racism was running high here even amonst the settlers the troops were here to protect.  There is one case of the commanding officer giving a trooper over to the local crowd to be hung for a crime of theft.

So, I'm not sure I'm comfortable saying the "ladies" were here in enough numbers to account for the feminine items I do find.

Jim, that is a great collection of relics.  If you talked, back there a ways in topicland, about how you researched this site, I missed it.  You sure 'nailed' it, though!

I like the .45-70, but you can't use 'em for guitar slides.  I can barely get a cut-down .50 casing over my little finger.

The match safe is great.  They had some on Aunt Eek's Roadshow a while back.

But I really want to hear more floozy stories.

Thanks for looking kids!
Jim, that is a great collection of relics.  If you talked, back there a ways in topicland, about how you researched this site, I missed it.  You sure 'nailed' it, though!

It's an Western Indian Wars era Montana Infantry location.  I've been hunting it on and off for years.   I don't talk much about it here.  Lips Sealed

Nice finds, jim. I see the snow melted up there Grin That lighter is nice. Too bad it's damaged. And the button is .....? Don't know about buttons, but is it Custer Era?

The lighter is actually just a "match case" - pre-pocket lighter technology Smiley

The button, as best I can guess, is 1860(ish) based on the back mark.  Pre Civil War actually, so if I dated it correctly, it made it all the way through the American Civil War (1861 - 1865) and well into the Indian War (post 1866 sometime...) era.   Thus, with General Custer being part of the CW and Indian wars, up till 1876 anyways... I'd have to say it is a button from the Custer Era.

Nice Digs Jim!  Love that Eagle and the bullet too.  Is that a Shaler or a .40-.70......The Shaler's over here seperate into 3 pieces...

I'm sure it is a .45-70 government as the infantry here all carried springfield carbines.
