Hey gang,
I went to a Army surplus store to get some pins of my old units and found out the 2 of them are defunct. The 23rd combat eng is no longer a unit. Sad, they were around since before WWII and the other unit AFCENT is no under a different command.... I guess I'm getting old.....

Proud Military Brat
I served as a dependant for the first 11 years of my life.

Dad was in youth Marine Corp reserve while in H.S.

After graduation he enlisted in the Army Air Forces, which became the U.S. Air Force that same year (1947).

I came into the world at Loring AFB.   Two weeks later I was at Lackland AFB, for 5 years while he was a T.I.

Then on to Goose Bay, Labrador......McGuire AFB, NJ......KAS, Turkey, where he was first Sergeant of the base.

He retired as Senior Master Sergeant in '68

I have seen plenty and learned more than most kids growing up.  I don't have a hometown to go back to, but I am richer for the experiences of growing up on Base.  To me, military brats just seem to be more "well rounded".

Thank you to all who serve and have served.

Spent most of my time at Cherry Point in MWSG-27, MWSS-274.  Lets not forget 3yrs in here at Gitmo Bay (some of the best scuba diving I have done).  Spent the last 3 years at 4th Marine Recruiting District HQ in New Cumberland, PA where I blew out my knee for the last time and got a medical discharge.  If that would not have happened, I think I would be on my 21st year of service.  I miss the Corps!

Went in for the old, "re-up" talk about 1 month before I got out. A 2nd Lt. was behind the desk and said I could have a seat. The first thing he did was open my file and reach into a drawer and pulled out some Staff Sargents stripes, threw them on the desk and said, "These are yours for 2 more years". As I really liked the Army I asked, "Where will I go from here?" He looked over my file for a minute and then said, "Hmmm, helicopters. You know where you will be going".  I responded, "No thanks , I'm going home".
Went over to Vietnam as a Petro. Specs. and ended up spending my time up in the air in a Huey. A high school buddy went over to Vietnam as a machine gunner and ended up being a postal clerk. Ahhhh. The Army always made sure they trained you for the right job from the beginning. Wink icon_scratch

Long, ramabling post to follow:

SSgt USAF 69-73 (active) as a Nuke, 463XX. ( Really BIG bombs).  Lots of places, all over.  Even spent some time defending the UP of MI from being attacked by Canada across frozen Lake Superior!  I did see someone mention KIS AFB.  WAY too much snow!!

Spent the next ten yrs as an SP  (USAFR).  After all, Chicago did declare itself a nuclear free zone, LOL.  They did forget to tell that to the USSR however.  Was in the first Reserve unit to go thru Airbase Ground Defense course.  (WSSF, Wpn System Security Flight).  Was assigned several times to guard AF One when it was in Chicago a couple of times.

Spent 28+ yrs as a civilian cop/det near Chicago.  Than became the federal guy in a suit who did background checks of recruits at Naval Station Great Lakes.  Scared the hell out of the recruits, who feared first the the guys in A school, then the Petty Officers.  Next came the BIG fear of the Chiefs and the Officers.  They just didn't know what to do with a guy in a suit who had a badge and "funny" creds and showed up unannounced.  Great fun, but I never figured out the Navy rank thing.

My late father went thru Omaha Beach just after D-Day.  Fought thru France, Belgium, and Germany.  Helped build the first bridge over the Rhine, helped liberate a concentration camp (don't tell me they didn't exist).  My late Father-in-Law was with an Operational Group in the OSS (forerunner to the US Army Special Forces and the CIA.  A TSgt grunt not a spy type. lol)  He parachuted into Greece, but was worried about climbing ladders.  Was awarded a Bronze Star, etc.  Has his name on a statue in Athens at the Army HQ as one of only 120 some Greek Americans who fought in Greece.  He never said anything except he served in Greece until he passed, No ref to OSS etc.  I was honored to have been invited to the Greek Embassy for a medal ceramony and there met the 12 surviving menbers of those OGs.  My Father never really spoke of the war either.

Makes my time in the AF (69-73 active, 10 yrs active Reserve) a walk in the park.  Even my Grandfather served in the Austrian army in WWI.

Thank a combat vet next time you see one.  Its been a great ride. I miss it.  OK, some of it !!!!!

Never argue with a pig, you'll only get muddy and besides, the pig likes it !!  And vote the BUMS out !

Dang - Where haven't I been?

I know I can't be the only Coastie here.

[/quote]

Nope not the only one; when I was attached to both the Army and Navy both groups always inquired what a Coastie was doing with them.  I told them it was simple it only takes 1 Coasty to keep them out of trouble.  But seriously it was all in fun.

Tried the CG again in 2001 and they told me that I had been out of active too long  and I would have to go back to boot camp so I joined the AF.  dontknow
