I am assembling a list of US Army Great Seal button backmarks 1902-present.. This seems to be the most complete list available online. With the help of TN members, I am occasionally adding and improving upon it. So far I have about 90 different backmarks. Anyone with a Great Seal button backmark not listed please post the pic and Ill add it.  icon_thumright Thanks.

This is how it all started:

I bought 2 bags of small Great Seal of US buttons for a buck at a flea market. Can someone help me date these backmarks?  I believe they are all post 1902. I cant find anything else online.

1- Top row SCOVILL MF'G CO  WATERBURY (back ungilted)
2-             SCOVILL MF'G CO  WATERBURY
3- Bottom CITY BUTTON WORKS - N.Y.
4-            WATERBURY BUTTON CO.

no replies?

My City Button Works may be WWI but the Scovills have me confused. According to internet research, this backmark is documented as a 1850-1865 production mark.

I am pleasantly surprised that these NY buttons may be "rare" WWI and mine are mint.

I figured what the hell for a buck. I thought they were modern and I have been tossing them in the surf to see were they end up in my thixotropic sand movement testing.   Roll Eyes  I didnt know they were old until I noticed the different backmarks.  Im still trying to get a date on the Scovills and Waterburys. Somebody here should know.

Yes, I realize they are all post 1902.  I would like to better date the backmarks. Does your book say anything?

That link does not apply to more modern Great Seal buttons or is in error.  If you notice under Scovill I have the same SCOVILL MF'G CO  WATERBURY backmark but Great Seal buttons are post 1902.  Huh

That backmark was used during the CW, post-CW, Indian Wars, Turn of the Century, early 20th c. ...

The deciding factor is the Size of the lettering on the backmark, the presence of one ring or two, or a dotted ring around the shank, etc.  Do you have a copy of Tice's book?  If so, check out the Plates in the beginning of the book.  If not, I'll try to make some time to do a little work on this for you.  Eve though Tice doesn't list buttons made after the CW, in his preliminary remarks about dating buttons, he lists backmarks and rough time frames for the big producers.

Waterbury Button Co. is 20th c. for sure...but I'll look up the exact dates later for you.  Time to hit the sack...

I think it should say 1855- 1965.  Possibly a typo.

Could be, but I just use the books when I can.  I don't trust the net.  Again, with that backmark--it's the Size of the letters, and other features that determines the date range.

Great seal made in 1902, and used a long time after that. Nice buttons.

Is crazyjarhead's button the same as number 7 on list or does the 'Newark N J' marking add another to the list?

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,235071.0.html

There is some text above the pic of the button. No back pic of the button, however finder states it reads: "The Art Metal Works, Newark N.J." Company operating from around 1900 to 1930. In 1930's was changed to Ronson Art Metal Works.

I think it's another Great Seal button manufacturer. There could be several models from this manufacturer  Cheesy

This thread is a great idea and reference tool. I'll know exactly where to check when I find my first Great Seal button  icon_thumright

A member sent me a good link on N.S. Meyers.   http://www.14to42.net/20streete042.html

While N.S. Meyers dates back to 1868, they were only in New York from 1906-2000. I will add the dates. Thanks cheyenne.

I was tossing them in the surf to see where they would end up because I thought they were modern and worthless. I have since found out they are WWI era and may have some value. BigCypressHunter,

You may have seen this link already but just in case. It has lots of button backmarks with their dates.

http://pw1.netcom.com/~jimyce/bm.html

HH!
-Moe
That link does not apply to more modern Great Seal buttons or is in error.  If you notice under Scovill I have the same SCOVILL MF'G CO  WATERBURY backmark but Great Seal buttons are post 1902.  Huh

I discovered why 1865 SCOVILLE MF'G CO. WATERBURY backmarks are showing up on WWI Great Seal buttons. This link explains it.

  http://inkspotantiques.com/shop/index.php?main_page=page&id=1

Keep in mind that using Scovill backmark lettering (including dots and stars) is not a foolproof method because Scovill often used old backmark dies to make newer buttons. Thus it is possible to have a World War I "Great Seal" button with an 1850 backmark.

Im adding a Scoville backmark to the list, with the 2 dots on each side of *WATERBURY*, because it is different.

This is a great thread.  Kudos to taking the time to document each one.  Are pics of all the backmarks on your list on this thread?  I was trying to match them all up but gave up....(too much scrolling up and down...and I'm lazy  tongue3).

I wont add to the list without seeing a pic but in the beginning I didnt post them.  I believe I have the others in my files. I will try to post a pic from now on.

It all started with those 2 bags of buttons.

I found online a pic of 76 Great Seal buttons for sale. It looks like backmarks I do not have. Can anybody read them? Some appear to say PHILA.   http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=4860340

Let me work on that pic. I'll see if I can't enhance it some.

ADDED....I worked on the picture from the site, but it is too grainy to enhance.  I'll try some more.

Not sure the button would fit the two vegetable ivory buttons listed in Alberts (GI 109 E. & GI 110 B.) dontknow

Looks like a few new backmarks listed for GI 106.

Have never seen the button made in horn. GI 109 C. Horn. "Warnock Uniform Co/New York" rm

I dont have Alberts book and thanks for the additions.  icon_thumright

I have since collected enough buttons to double this list.  I purchased a tin full of 300 WWl buttons from eBay and I have some very unusual backmarks. I have buttons in vegetable ivory, steel backed, red colored, made in England and Paris and different shapes and sizes. I didnt realize how many different manufacturers existed. Some members suggested a website.

Thanks again.
