Dusty field with foot prints everywhere, an arrowhead hunters nightmare senario.  Right??  Well this was the condition today.  I was tired, wanted to go home then I saw a flint chip lodged in the ground, I thought  'what the heck I'll pick it up'.  The earth moved above it, so I just flip it out and there it was a 3 7/16" Carter Cave Clovis arrowhead.  I couldn't believe my eyes, and neither could my buddy Chuck who was right there when this unfolded.  There still out there!  HH

Wow, looks like they still have the fluting nipple on there for the unfluted side!  Has the side 'guide' flutes, but not the main flute.  Is the small protruding nipple in the base ground well?  It may not be, but it sure looks like they were set up to flute that second side but didn't do it yet?

I figure it's an unfinished piece.  The nipple is not ground, but it is definately there.  The barbs are lightly ground.  The maker set up that medial ridge that runs down to the nipple for the next flute.  Someone suggested it was a St.  Louis type clovis.   I still can't believe I found this sucker.  I didn't think I was this lucky.

I MUCH prefer a piece like this (rather than if both sides were finished), due to the educational value.  Your first Clovis is a doozy!

We had a point that made banner last year that was found still hafted to a shaft with asphaltum.

I also remeber a clear quartz point back a few years ago but they don't make the banner that often.

I have to admit I know nearly nothing about Indian artifacts so I popped the name Carter Cave Clovis into Google and here is an auction that came up:  http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/2458528  The starting bid was $1000 and the estimated value was $3,500 to $4,500.  Granted this one is a little smaller but that is still impressive.

Congrats on a great find and for making the banner.

again superior point, maybe the best personal find I've seen on Tnet. Why do indian artifacts rarely, if ever, make the banner? I'm not trying to start anything here or derail the thread, just wondering. That clovis for example is most likely older than everything else combined on the banner. It's also probably worth more than many of those combined as well. Just my opinion but 10,000 year old artifacts trump hundreds of year old manufactured metal.

The find deserves to be a Banner. It is older than any known coin and if lucky a once in a life time find .Congratulations !!!

WTG! It's about time a arrowhead hunter
hit the banner. Very few have found one
of those, and it's one that you don't
forget.

Nice Clovis point indeed.  Many look, but only a lucky few actually find them.  Great job!  If you verify whether or not it is unfinished, it would be very cool to get a blood residue analysis done on it.
Nope, It doesn't make the list!

Hello,

I believe the maker didn't finish it.  He left the fluting nipple and didn't retouch one side of the blade.  If he would have fluted the other side of the point then I believe he would have ground the base.  Thats what makes it so interesting because you can see the steps of manufacture.

Sad to say if I were digging a pull tab and this was just above the pull tab I would have said neat looking rock and taken the pull tab out so later I would not hit it again.
I wonder how many uneducated people have tossed out artifacts like this one thinking the metal hit was what they were suppose to take.

If these things are worth 4,500 dollars what prevents someone from just chipping one up on their own? Isn't like trying to counterfeit a $100.

cdltpx is my youtube screen name look there I have lots of favorites on many subjects. I also have a lot of subscribers that I have not thanked a single one of them for subscribing. I figure they subscribed same reason I sub to others to learn from what they find or post.

The other side is fascinating.  The original Shoop Site Report (Withrow ?) wrote about the points there showing what he called the Enterline Technique : narrow "guide channels/flutes" removed first before the main one, to guide it straight up the axis of the point. Naturally, some smart aleck at the Smithsonian wrote a 're-interpretation" laughing at this idea. (And at his Enterline Scraper form, &c &c.)

But there it is, in front of God and ever'buddy !  hello2 laughing7 headbang
