This thread is to post Ebay cob auctions of interest. I personally intend to just post current auction items I like, but don't plan to bid on. Maybe somebody here will like 'em....comments welcome.

Here is a neat little 1730's Guatemalla 1 reale:

The guy claims he is knowledgeable, but it is clearly a 1712 "ufo" back. It does have some interesting secondary strike marks that are somewhat consistent with the actual method used. It would be interesting to see if the design fading actually matches up with low points on the coin planchette. He really comes off as misleading and a huckster.

I went back and read the description and really cracked up. I was in a hurry and mentioned the item just because it was green. What a story....

"obtained this coin from known people"

Ever think about getting a cert?

"This coin has been inspected and is easy to identify by authorities (Jewelers)"

Most jewelers don't even know what a cob is....

"I have a holed coin (burial coin, and a "piece of eight' around my neck, and it is really fun.  People just HAVE to touch it, and I bask in it's light  LOL."

Dude you are standing entirely too close to me. I'm calling the cops....

With that Brazillian circulated cob, the guy is saying it was valued at 480 Reis and then devalued to 600 Reis, which is in the wrong order. The significance of this is that it is a pre-post mint scandal coin, refelcting a devaluation in a Portugese colony. I know Sedwick has a bunch of Brazillian circulated cobs for sale right now. It would probably be easy to check this.

These were found by Joel Ruth after Hurricane Jeanne somewhere north of Sebastian Inlet. He stated that there were so many that he was picking them up off the sand without his detector. It got dark and the tide was coming in so he decided to quit for the night. The next morning, he couldnt find a single cob. The sand had already buried them. It is a small window of oppurtunity.

I have the newspaper article somewhere but this was all I could find online. Second story.

1715? I don't think so. The Flying Heart sank in Dutch waters in 1735.

Includes "auction flippet". Is that supposed to be the certificate of authenticity?

I like this one. It may be authentic, but it is certainly not 1715. Looks more like part of a 1740 coin from SFDB. Even says, "Reign of Ferdinand VI."

Cert doesn't seem to indicate it is from a wreck. It says this at the bottom: "This coin conforms to the highest standards used in evaluating ancient coins of this type and is from the Mel Fisher private family collection. This coin was re-certified on Wednesday August 10, 2008."

Interesting Stan, Looks fantastic, how would you get Mel Fisher certificate from the 1715 fleet it's 1740?

CuzcoSquirrel found that one. I don't think they (the Fishers) found it, so won't say which wreck it came from. Or it came from an unidentified wreck in the Keys, You could call them with that coin ID number and ask them to look it up.

Sunday PM...

A very good deal for $125 IMHO. You can see parts of two dates. Listed as a "buy it now" item. I would buy it if I hadn't spent so much shopping this weekend. Let me know if you buy it...

I dont know. It does look a little shady. The more I learn about cobs, the harder it is to ID the fakes. Cheesy There are so many different stamps that its hard to be sure. One way to be sure is to find two alike. I am a bit suspicious of this cob.

Does your internet service provider give you any storage space for a web page? That would be a good place to start a page. After it matures you can migrate it to a better location. As far as registering a domain you can go to a registration company like godaddy.com to check on available names. For instance, "fakecob.com" is available (just an example).

Hi Stan, the Potosi 8R looks good, I have a Atocha 8R Potosi Assayer Q  only half as good. Very temping.

These were undated coins, but assayer R should be Baltasar Ramos Leceta, 1596-1612. Yes, it is an all around nice coin. Good weight too. I expect it will get some attention and the price will climb, but you never know. It may end up being a deal. It is much nicer than my dated Atocha too, if you consider the overall quality. Of course, it was not sitting in salt water for 3 1/2 centuries.

Look at these two rare 1726 Potosi coins. From the cave hoard. I confirmed with the seller, same seller I bought from. As you probably know from my previous postings most of the finds were 1730 dated Mexico 8R coins, assayer G and R.

http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-8-REALES-C...VICVS-I-KM-39_W0QQitemZ250457053393

Also, look at his Mexico 4R form the cave. Somebody obviously thinks this overdate assayer is very rare. Personally, I would rather have the more expensive of the two Potosi coins....

Thanks again for keeping us posted..wanted to buy one of these----BUT just paid Florida Real Estate taxes !
Wonder about these sellers---must be much more to this story...hope some one will be able to eventually document this cave 'find'.
The greenies being sold some weeks ago are just a interesting. It boggles my brain to consider how many cobs/coins are actually out there from these years.

The two 1726 coins are advertised as Luis I, but there is not any legend on the coins to prove that. If Luis I was the monarch identified on the legend and it was legible on a coin it may be the only example known. Sedwick and Menzel both indicate that Lima changed dies for the 1726 issue to reflect the passing of Luis I and return of Philip V as king. 1726 coins are still considered rare though from what research I have done. I would like to own one, but the asking price is a bit more than I am willing to part with now.

If you are patient I think you will see some of the higher grade 1730 coins appear for sale in the future. Most of the cave cobs were dated in that year.

Yes the greenies were very interesting and I was tempted to buy one in particular because of its strange shape. I like cobs with good character. Perhaps some higher grade greenies will appear for auction too. I might make an impulsive bid.   tongue3

I use IE windows XP. For some reason I can no longer save web pages. Its says error web page cannot be saved. Is anyone else having this problem? Maybe eBay has this blocked now? Can you save the complete webpage Divewrecks?

I went back a month to a restore point. Maybe I need to go back further.

The same thing happens to me (on Ebay) when I do:

file - save as - web page complete

I don't personally have reason to save whole web pages very often.

I am saving entire webpages on eBay so I have the entire story to go with the cob. For some reason its working now. icon_thumright

If authentic this almost certainly a 1715 fleet coin. You can see the partial date 171X. Chances are extremely high that it is a 1714. Of the 45 dated Mexico 2 escudo coins in Florida's collection, 41 of them are 1714....

Not a bad little wreck coin for a reasonable "buy it now" of $150. I think it would look better in-hand (less shiny). If anyone buys it tell the seller to give you the right cert for that particular coin....
http://cgi.ebay.com/Consolacion-Spa...1679-cob-coin_W0QQitemZ280376371783

Here the coin matches the cert. I think the seller just made a mistake on the other one....

There were Spanish missions on the Santa Fe river in Florida, so one would like to think that could be the origin. The imprint does look somewhat like a coin design, but obviously not quite the right size. Who knows, maybe the Indians made the piece, copied from something that was Spanish.

It's a lift copy. If it has any gold in it, it might be worth a little. At 10 grams, you have to wonder. There is a gold addative for casting that looks a lot like that. I think it is called "new gold."

I made a Lima 1704 4 esc. years ago, and a couple 1699 2 esc. Not the easiest coins to copy.

Not necessarily. In fact I sent him a link to one very similar that was almost identical to the one on his site and he said he would have to see it first. I would make sure the seller had a decent rating and return policy so I could inspect it first if I was bidding. Good eye....

Thanks, I am almost 99% sure it's a fake after looking at Mr Sedwicks fake and the sellers. I put the pics side by side and the cobs are exactly the same. So I'm just going to steer clear of it. I notice it didn't sell anyway.
