You are right Hfor8. They are identical.

Maybe that is the original that all the fakes were copied from.  Cheesy

The guy had a good feedback rating, Maybe he didn't know it was fake.

lol, great point(s) I notice he didn't relist it yet either. I almost bid on it and then I read the post here about it being a 53 and not the other date. Then I went back through Sedwicks and notice it had a close friend. I think I might avoid it now. It's a great copy if it is a fake.

Would be nice with a date between the pillars too:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1669-Potosi-Cob...n-Clear-dates_W0QQitemZ140360885779

Same seller has another fairly nice one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/1689-Potosi-Cob...l-Lovely-Coin_W0QQitemZ140360883470

I like this coin. 1684 Potosi 8R assayer VR. Bold strike, nice toning and full weight. You seldom see coins from the Feversham wreck. A little high on the price side, but after seeing prices realized at the Sedwick auction I think it is reasonable. Would make a nice addition to anyone's collection....

Considering his excellent 100 percent positive feedback rating in 1,456 sales, my guess would be he didnt know.  That probably contributed to the buyers bidding with confidence.

I notice my pic also came from a past eBay sale. (notice the camera icon in the bottom right corner) I dont know the sellers name.

Well, his English must not be much better than my Spanish. In my follow-up to him I wrote:

"Here is proof the one you sold is fake. It was cast from the same mold as yours. Will you inform the seller? Selling a replica coin as real is against Ebay rules (and against the law, at least in the US)."

And he wrote back:

1618 mounted Grade 1 Atocha coin. The cert doesn't even indicate a date (XXXX)Huh Cert indicates weight at 26.28g, which is pretty respectable for an Atocha coin. This might end up being a decent buy for someone looking for an Atocha coin:

The Lucayan beach wreck is thought to be one of Dutch pirate Piet Hien's ships. Read story of wreck here (http://www.sedwickcoins.com/shipwreck_histories/lucayan.htm). Also, a funny read on the find is "Winners and Losers" by Jack Slack (serious). Here is a 4 reale coin from the wreck:

I actually posted that one knowing you would probably say something about it (ha-ha), but yes I am fairly certain it is real. A lot of the late issue Potosi cobs really look hokey enough to make you think imitation. If you have Menzels' book have a look at coins from about 1740 on up. I personally like the "free style" look...

OK thanks. Im learning. I could see that it was silver but the lions and castles look funky among other things.  Like I said earlier, the more I learn about cobs, the less confidant I am in spotting suspicious coins. lol.  I also notice a severely worn coin will not look at all like it was originally.

There is really no substitute for reference materials and the ability to openly discuss characteristics of individual coins. Hopefully we can do more of that on this forum. I track auctions almost daily to develop a sense of value. I have also enjoyed sitting through the last two Sedwick auctions nearly in their entirety to see what prices are realized. Prior to the auction I use the hard copy catalog to reserach particular coins and make notes. I was quite surprised at what some of the coins were going for.

I have actually been able to get some fairly good deals on very nice coins through Ebay. Obviously, one has to be careful when learning and not make a mistake like the buyer of the heart shaped coin I posted the thread on today....

What kind of antiquities do you specialize in? Another period collectible I like is Spanish colonial religious medals and crucifixes.

"Q: hello,i all so am not an expert on these coins, but i would like to know more about your listing.if you would please tell me can you make out any numbers on this coin, and would you tell me pompeard to a u.s. coin what would be its size.also the pic,s are very por can you try to list better ones.thank you    Dec-12-09

A:     I can not see any numbers. I see some letters that look like COAY or Co9Y not positive what these letters are. I do not have a great camera I did my best with pictures. Coin is about l 1/2 inches wide across the width"

From the guy selling a silver copy of the gold coin:

"Thank you Stan...I see by your contact name you must know about wrecks...I
took my 1713 coin off the market...yours was the second e-mail I received
saying it was not a real coin... If you could help me out...is this a
modern day counterfeit?  Did the store in the keys just manufacture
it?"

Pretty good. We got two down in a day!

There are no bids on this cob. It this one of those unusual Potosi's? Waves look good. Nice worn edges.

I copied and Pasted this list from eBay .

By a royal statute decreed during the reign of King Charles I of Spain, the official weights of silver reales were--alas, many coins never came close to these official numbers.

8 reales (cob) = 27.3 grams [0.96 ounces]
4 reales (cob) = 13.65 grams [0.48 ounces]
2 reales (cob) = 6.82 grams [0.24 ounces]
1 real (cob) = 3.41 grams [0.12 ounces]
½ real (cob) = 1.71 grams [0.06 ounces]

I was hoping nobody would see this one. The opening bid was set at I think $579, with a buy-it-now of $850. Well, someone else recognized the rarity and got it. See Menzel's book, top left of page 279. Potosi 16Z1T with transposed castles and lions. It is nicer (and rarer) than the 1618 dated Grade 1 Atocha I bought several years ago for around $850, which I considerd a bargain.

Oh well, maybe someone else here got it. I was going to pass the lead on to Ossy to get him back to posting on this forum.... Grin

It's tedious to read through some of the descriptions as they can be quite long.  But on the last line of the description is the disclaimer:  "This RARE PRINT EDITION COMES WITH A REPLICA MINTED DOUBLOON LIKE ONES FROM THE SALVAGE!".

Not Atocha, but with the "J" assayer it is probably 1715 fleet. Looks like it was in contact with iron from the rust tinted areas. This is good, because it provides extra protection from corrosion. The iron acts as a "sacrificial anode"....

Stan, it wasn't directed at you.  Some sellers will bloat their description in the hope that a buyer will become bored and just bid.  The disclaimer isn't at the top for a reason.  I find the practice unscrupulous.

Just for info, it is easy to report an auction for a fraudulent item on Ebay. For a cob you would click on "Report Item" on the right side of the page, then choose the drop down "Prohibited (Banned Items)", and then "Currency, Coins, Stamps, Coupons, etc." and finally "Fraudulently or Improperly Described Currency" and click the "Continue" button. Then enter a "Brief Description" and click the "Send Report" button. You will get an email auto response, but no one from Ebay will contact you. They will evaluate it and if there are sufficient grounds or enough complaints they will terminate the auction.
