As long as you love it.....surveying will expose you to more MD sites than any other occupation.  Another plus, you will have the ability to do research beyond others, just knowing how to work the courthouse systems.  Start reading old journals, find out whose farm had the grove picnics, and off you go to the courthouse.   Surveying at times will seem like a curse in a way, it is not easy, that is why few people do it.  You need doged determination, solid, I mean solid work ethic, and willingness to always learn.   When I am reading a deed and see calls for stones at corners, I get determined to find them.  Anyone can find a pin, pipe, or railroad spike, the ones who are determined find the original calls.

I work from home. I have an industrial size food grinder that I use to prepare buckets of fresh raw ground meat for dogs that I home deliver. I mix the meat with crushed brown rice.
I grind cows, sheep, kangaroos, goat and expired laying hens.
The dogs are mentally stable, tumor free and liver/kidney disease free in comparision to
those that eat can or pellet food (so the vet. that looks after the local greyhound racing club tells me) and from my own experience with my own dogs.

Finished most of my major & minor at Bible College this past May... I'll be taking the last 3 or 4 Gen Ed classes in the Spring, and possibly some entry level medical classes just for the fun of it. In the meantime, I provide customer service for a bank that supports over for 450 colleges & universities across the US, which equals out to about 2.6 million student & faculty account holders. It's a fun job which I actually really enjoy! Smiley

Land Surveyor here too............ finding an old stone, bearing tree, or rotted oak post is like treasure every day! Friday in the deep swamp, alone, had to cut a tree down to cross a creek to find a corner. Two hours to get there and find it, 5 seconds to hit the GPS button and get the number.

I like to navigate on big water also.

Wow very strange job indeed. Was it dirty? I'm sure it was. Did you wear glasses or contacks? Really I believe that when you wear  glasses there are harmful rays that penetrate your eye making your sight even worse. Correct me if I'm wrong. Just a theory.

Why is it so fascinating to me to see what everybody does? I just love the "everydayness" of it all. I have a job that is physically, mentally and emotionally challenging- on a good day. On a bad day, I am wearing myself out for no good reason at all, and all my labors will be in vain! Grin It's all in the attitude towards work, right? Whatever your hands find to do, do it to the best of your ability. Glad to see you thinking about such things cival war hunter!

Upon further reflection, even though the question is about "making a living" meaning "bringing home the bacon". If raising children is part of that equation, (who eats most of the bacon?) the stay-at home-mom or dad has to figure in.  It's the absolute most undervalued job there is! But it pays well in the long run icon_thumleft

My previous job was a Haiku Repairman.
Haven't had any work for a long time.
Now in training as an Aurum Removal Specialist.
Aurum is one of those heavy metals like lead that is often found in water supplies.
Has been the cause of countless deaths all over the world.
I hope to do my part in removing this stuff from rivers and streams.

Currently on the injured (stupid bombs and stuff) list in the Army....but gonna be medically retired very very soon.  Have begun writing business plan on a 4 tiered business after I am out and started the first tier with my brother recently (real estate investment). Prior to being injured I was a Psych attendant in a state hospital. I loved that job so much. I will miss it. I am also in classes working towards a wildlife biologist degree.
