Posted Oct 18, 2009, 09:38:18 am

Today I took some time for myself and headed to a far corner of the hay field accross the road.  This spot in the field was my first serious hunt this spring with the ACE 250.  I brought home a 1798 LC, a handfull of tombac and dandy buttons.  This is the first time back to this spot since that weekend.
Now I swing a Minelab 705 and was thinking that I could pick up something old.  I turned off the iron, cranked up the sens. and picked my way arround.
Not really sure what to say other than the best button came first at about 10".   I knew right away that I had a KEEPER Grin  In my watch pocket it went.......   About twenty feet away got another broken deep signal.......   USA # 2 !!!!!

I spent another hour and got a small cuff size tonbac then called it a day.

 I will be going back.......

I am still a little shocked at this...   I have been outside doing yard work so I dont sit here and stare at the button's.
What do I do now?  I am not going to do anything more to clean them.  These are going to be left "as found" .
Is there a place where I can get some more info about this button.  Do any of you fine folks have anything to add about the story behind this find.  Should I do anything to conserve these buttons?

       Thanks again,     VPR

Yes, you absolutely have to seal those.  There are a few options with clear urethane and a wipe being my method of choice. Wax I don't like on pewter because you can't heat, and I have never tried the glue mixture method.  Do a little research and testing and see what you prefer.

Here's one I just recently posted that is sealed.  The idea is to protect it, but not leave it too glossy... as a dug pewter really shouldn't be.

PS...  A little soap and water with some light brushing wouldn't hurt either if you haven't done that.  Better to get as much dirt off as you can before you seal them.

What I have been able to find online tells me that I have a really nice button.

I use water-based clear urethane. I first brush it on the back and wipe to leave a very thin coat, then do the same to the sides. I let that dry, then coat the front also giving a quick wipe with a lint free cloth.  I let it dry and that's it, that's all, sealed for good.  The urethane works nicely into the cracks and because it was wiped it's very thin, and only a little glossy.

What ever you decide test it out first on a plain button.

The mere fact that  the shanks are still intact is amazing. I  found one identical to yours (intertwined USA) back in the 80's in Virginia... half the shank was gone but otherwise in  pretty  good condition. Edges were a bit  crumbly . I was  afraid to  clean it  much  less  apply  any kind of  urethane to it. From what i understood  yrs  ago  when  i found  it , there was  a few different varieties as far as how the  letters overlapped and if they overlapped.

All in all ,  2 great   finds...my advice...dont sell them ..I regret that I did...when i sold mine , they  were only worth 50-100 dollars back in the  mid nineties. These buttons represent what   the USA is  all  about. To me they are  priceless  and  if  I ever   find  another ,  i will never  trade  it for money.
Banner find  for sure.

It's the other way around, scary to leave as dug because they will crumble.

One that has condition issues still might not get over $100, but the nice one above surely would.

Thank You every one for the Banner votes !!   The button sure does look good up there!

Stay tuned as I will be headed back to this part of the field again this coming weekend. (weather permiting)
The grass is kinda tall because the farmer was not able to do a second cut this fall.  Makes for some tough detecting. I guess that I shouldnt complain Grin

Fantastic find!  I am glad you didn't get rained out like many of us here on the East Coast this weekend.  That is one of the nicest pewter USA buttons I have seen.  I think there have been 3 posted recently, and at least one of those made the banner.  IMHO, none of those hold a candle to yours!

I am also thankful that this made the banner so we don't have to see Iron Patches bumps for the next 90 days  Wink

Congrats!
Neil

Congrats on the Banner,Well deserved as that is a Very Nice button and in Very Good shape too. notworthy headbang hello2 hello

Wanted to mention something I've started using as my own experimental preservative and seems to work good for me as I can tell.I just use a small paint brush and smooth it out all over and keep painting the access off tell i'm happy then let it dry.It dries clear adds a protective coating and the polymers help keep it intact.Safe as well to you as it is a organopolymer.Anyway just something I thought I'd shoot out there. The other things talked about are from guy's who know best probably.
Here is a site on it if you care to read. Also on the bad ones I repeat this a couple of times.

WOW!!! Awesome buttons!  They are definitely on my wish list.  10" on a small pewter button is some very nice depth.  Not sure my Exp II could give a nice repeatable signal at that depth on small pewter unless conditions were just about perfect.  Congrats!!!!!

Thank You for all the replies !!

Museum wax is a possibility

I really hate to see you go.  I think that my button was a condition thing.   Dont let the fact that your button did not make the banner make you feel this way.  Last fall I found a G.W. Inaugural button and did not make the banner with it.

Stay with us and show more of you GREAT finds,     VPR
