Hey everyone,

I don't know what to say right now but wow. It's been a great week of hunting. I've been hitting it hard the past 6 straight days. It all started about a week ago. I was reading up on some local history right. I seen that there was a old cabin that used to sit in this one park. I have never been to this park before.

But I said hey what the heck lets go look for it. Me and my boy set out that saturday to see what we could come up with. Well I didn't find the cabin site yet. So I decided to just venture around the park some. I picked up a few old coins that day. I made a mental note to come back the following week.

On the way out of the place though I spotted a area with a ton of briars. No big deal right. Not the case though. Briars are a good sign of a old home site. I don't know why but it's one thing I look for when finding old homesteads. I said to my son next week we will check that briar area out.

Well my hunch was right. There was a small homestead nestled in there. Bad thing was it had been hunted before. But hey that never deters me from hunting. So off we went. It held some promise as I was able to score a few silver rings relics and low and behold my first spanish silver and it's a 8 reale.

I had no idea what it was out in the field. It was totally coated with dirt. I put it in the pouch and passed it off as a large token. Well when I got home and started to clean it I realized i had a big silver coin. It was about 12 inches deep under a sandstone rock. As hits seemed to dry up at the home site I decided to walk back deeper into the woods were I had found a few coins the first day I was there.

Well to make a long story longer. The site was just loaded with coins. I don't know what was down in these woods. My maps show nothing was here in 1876. So I started to look around and though to myself this must have been a old swimming or fishing hole. It's a bluff right above a nice creek.

I was able to pull my first seated quarter a very nice 1877. I was in heaven this week guys. I actually made a few finds that made my hands shake a little. Don't happen to me very often. I pulled out coin after coin after coin. Just to much to try and list right now. Got a 1894 S barber quarter.

A key date 1921 merc. Got a 3 cent silver love token. Tons of wheat cents with a few key dates. Got 7 indian heads. Got a bunch of old nickles. Got a toasted 1817 or 1827 matron head. This site was used. Best part was it has never been touched by a unit. I got more hunting to do at this site. Got a really nice sterling thimble.

I'd much rather answer any questions you all might have. Then try and sit here and describe every item. What can I say. I even amaze myself. I am very fortunate to have so much history around me. I am very humble for the sucess I have had over the yrs. This has taken me alot of work to post and clean all of these things to share with you all.

I want to thank you all for the nice comments and looking at my finds. I know this is a little over the top but you know what. If you work hard enough at anything your gonna excel. I work very hard at this hobby. It's something I truly love to do. It's not about money for me. It's the discovery and the going back in time for a moment that keeps me going.

Thanks again guys,

HH Jer

I bet you love that site!  Great job on the cleaning and displaying of your finds.  I love the eagle bullet.  I bet that site becomes your "backup" hunting grounds as it looks like it will always give up something interesting.  Did you use a custom program or just one of the stock programs?  ah....if you used a stock program do you remember which one you used?  It looks like the last couple of weeks have been very good to most detectors.  Glad the cooler weather is upon us now.  Keep at it (like you gonna quit now.)  I'm sure there is another good piece or two at your site.  Congratulations on a real nice week of hunting.

Yes,

Thanks alot everyone. I wish the 77 IH was down there. I got hundreds of indians and no 77. One day it will show. That is the great thing about this hobby.

Yeah, This one will be on the list for future hunts. I let them rest for awhile. I cleaned alot of these items differently. All the relics were tumbled with mild dish soap for about 8 to 10 hrs. Then you can polish them or soak them in olive oil. Copper coins were peroxided first for date checking. Once I knew the wheats were commons they went to the tumbler also.

Soaked a few items in vengar for about 12 hrs. Bunch of different ways. All depends on the condition of the items first.

I don't know anything about the bullet other than it's a .45. It's a really cool find. It says usmc on the bottom. It had a loop to wear it as a key chain I think. Looks millitary. I thought it was just another bullet. Tumbled it and when it came out I was like man what is that a eagle.

I think it's safe to say this site will still be here for the rest of my life time. I hit real remote areas. You start to get good over the yrs with reading the land just by looking at it.

Thanks SF I like to think so at times lol. I have spent somewhere around close to 10,000 hrs on this unit. It has really paid off for me. I've seen alot of guys say and use a dfx and call them junque. They just take alot of time to master. Anything good comes with a wait.

Thanks seated, I think there may be a few more good items in there. It's a large beautiful area. It has huge tree's and the soil is just great. Got real lucky to stumble on this one.

Thanks again

Jer

Looks like you found the mother lode!

I wonder what was at that site?  My first thought was "privy", but I don't think so.  The brass fob may be a hint.  I found one and it alerted me that there was once a small picnic and beach area where I was detecting.  What does yours say?

Fantastic finds.  I know you will go back and get some more!

Awesome digs!  Man, what a dream week, congrats on all of it!

I have a theory about your briars as I saw the same thing happen to me when building a house in what was essentially an empty field.  We have tons of sticker bushes all around the perimeter of the house now where there were none before.  Realized two things:  I tracked them to the house when working on it, so from one tiny bush far away from the house I brought in a lot of new ones.  And second, I essentially built a wind-break with the house, so instead of rolling away in a big wind, the stickers got caught and took root.

Again, super finds!

We all know there's no such thing as a "hunted out" location.  Let's stop using that phrase to describe a park out of which you just dug a pile of coins!  Obviously that particular place wasn't "hunted out", right?

Thanks alot everyone.

All I can do right now is speculate what was at this place. It wasn't a home that's for sure. Because I already found one homesite not far from this site. Same woods just further down the creek. The park isn't really old. Built in the mid 1930's.

There are old pop bottle ketchup bottles etc strew around. No trace of a home. Great level land though for one. There is however a pipe line that runs behind the site. Either gas oil or water. Not sure but that's another good sign your near a home or structure.

Those briars seems to come up often in front of old home steads. They seem to come up in the areas where the lawns would have been. I often look for them in the woods. Amongst other things like dirt rds flowers a well etc.

What more could I ask for. Well maybe a gold coin or a bust silver would really top it off. I can always dream big right. I'm gonna fall over the day a gold coin comes up.

Yes, If it was up to me I would do it full time. The wife doesn't seem to think so. But hey I work nights my kids are in school. So what the heck. After I get my work done around the house I'm out swinging. Then I go to work tiered. That's how much I like to hunt.

I'll be back at it this weekend. Hopefully there is a nice gold ring or something hidding in there. I've been hitting it really fast. Gonna slow down and overlap my swings. I'll be back with more.

Thanks Jeremy

Jer,

Wow, you hit into a great site there.  I love your pics as always, and you clean everything up so nicely.  It shows that you are really dedicated to the hobby and the history.  That DFX is really working for you.  I don't think there is any better machine, because that's the one you are best at using.   You really have a nose for finding good spots.  Definitely a mark of experience.

Glad to see you're still on here doing what you love to do.   That is an amazing haul you dug there.  Congrats on that Reale and the silvers.  Heck, the Injuns are nice too.

Thanks alot guys.

You know I never thought about that. I hit a quarter trifecta. Man that is hard to do. This was a great place to hunt. The type of site that you just knew when you got a signal it was silver or something good.

Nice hunting a site that hasn't been pounded by others before. There are still a bunch of overlooked nooks out there. I have came across these type of places more than a handful of times. Just takes alot of perserverance.

I don't quit. I keep swinging until my unit tells me there is something there.

Thanks RI. I spent alot of time this week cleaning items. Taking pics sizing them all down. Took me alot of hrs this week. But I wanted to share these great items with you all. What good are they just sitting in a closet for no one to see.

Yes, I am very good with whites units. The first unit I ever used was in the early 90's. It was a whites eagle spectrum. A good unit at that time. I fell in love with this hobby from day one. I have always had a knack for finding treasure. It just seems like I just keep getting better and better. Just when I think I have done it all something else turns up or a new site is discovered.

I don't know what to say but I am very humble and glad that all my hrs of sitting on the computer are taking me to some great areas. History really is spot on. If you can understand it and match it up. Gets very hard at times. But I always know there is something out there to find.

Thanks again

Thanks alot guys

Try this program. Use the eeprom high pro program. Note it's a very difficult program to run if you are new to this unit. But stick with it. Make these changes vol 63 threshold at 5. tone at 200 ac at 85 pre amp at 4 accept -40 through plus 95. Sweep speed of 11 7 3 or 1. Important recovery speed at 28. Also turn the icons off. Dig every signal from plus 10 and up.

You can turn modulation off or on. I like it off most of the time. It will help deeper items chirp in a little better. Tone id on best data on. Double ground balance after making changes. If the unit is unstable try kicking down the gain to 3. Or take the ac down 5 numbers at a time. If all else fails run the program the way it is. Everyone's soil is different so it's hard for me to say if you will be stable with these settings. It holds for me. I use the 1400 DD coil and get coins at 12 inches all the time.

Not dimes but large cents tokens etc. You'll get dimes at 9 inches. From time to time if you have the unit on in the house when you go out to hunt pull the battery out of the back of the unit while it is on. It resets the processor in the unit. Perfectly safe for it. Also if you don't already know check this site out. You can learn alot here about the dfx at www.dfxonly.com.

I hope this helps you or someone else out there. I've made my mark already and I really do like to try and help others. I like to think that I am very skilled and knowledged on this unit. Yrs ago I knew a few engineers for whites. They shared secrets with me when this unit first came out. I've done great ever since.

But I am also spending alot of time looking over maps and reading history on different areas in my co. I'm putting myself in places where treasure would be. And I am coming out ontop.

I did go a little crazy this week. But man when you come across a great site you literally lose sleep wondering what else may come up. Beleive me my wife has been on me and working me to death for it all.

I got real lucky this late in the yr. I took a 3 month lay off for my boys baseball season. I may have found 200 silvers this yr. But I am closing in fast on a 100 pieces. That's about what I have been averaging over the yrs. Getting up close to 50 indians on the yr also. Looks like it's gonna be a great fall this yr. Trying to get out as much as I can. Looks like were headed for a bad winter.

Jeremy,  You've had a great time of hunting!!  Congrats!!  No more info on the site.....you can bet your bottom dollar
that there are some who are dissecting every word you have put out, and are trying to look at old messages, trying to
determine where you live, and trying to pinpoint the park, and then THEY will walk it, trying to put together your
puzzle, so they can put coins in their pockets.
No more info about any aspect of the locale of the site.   BUT keep posting your finds.......3 old old quarters, one site!!!
Unbelieveable.

Can't find it if you're watching tv at home, your machine isn't on, and the head of your detector is pointed up!!

Thanks alot guys.

I am sworn not to tell where I am hunting. Been through that before. Used to attend a club yrs ago. When I started out hunting guys every single month they got super jealous. They started bashing me telling me my finds weren't authentic. It was there way of wanting to know where I was hunting.

The times I did tell people 20 guys would be hunting my spot while I wasn't there. I'm not putting hard work in to give everyone a place to hunt. I hunt alone now and only share sites with family members.

They will never come across this site. Been sitting there for a 100 yrs looked over by everyone. We have so many parks here in the NE. They would have to go through hundreds of them.

Beleive me when I say I watch what I say. I don't actually give to much info. Why do you think I don't include pictures of the site. I would love to but all I need to do is give away a spot. I'll let you guys see the dirty items when they get to my counter. And yes I do dig every signal even the foil. I hit a nice 9 or 10 kt pin the last time I was down there digging foil hits.

It was a super week of hunting. Probably spent 20 hrs in the field last week. Gonna go put some more hrs in today. Hopefully it's not tapped out yet.

Thanks alot guys.

I love to hunt lands that I don't have to ask for permission. This park see's very little activity. It's great ya know. Every now and then you'll see someone walking a dog. But it is a very remote place. It's a good treck through the woods. You have to ford a creek twice. It's not that easy to get to. That's why it's still there. The harder they are to get to the better the chances.

Pulled out another 17 old coins today there. I won't go into detail yet. But I can say there were a few great coins to come out. I'll be back again here soon.

Thanks alot guys

Thanks alot guys.

No problem on the tips. I've put close to 10,000 hrs on this unit. I know it front to back and then some. Been using it for 9 yrs now and have found more treasure than I ever imagined I would. Great unit it really is. I've seen many out there bash this unit.

I'm pretty sure it was a swiming hole party area or possibly now a place were the bot scouts were camping out. Or maybe the girl scouts. Found a bunch of p[ocket knives and a nice GS button yesterday. Definetly could have done some fishing there also. My boy spotted 2 catfish in the water yesterday.

All I can do is speculate. But I've come across nooks in the woods like this before. People loved to hang out in the woods here in p.a. It really is a beautiful place to hunt. The scenery is just great.

Thanks alot everyone.

Yes, Monty I got a ton of energy. I suck items out of the ground like nothing. I got this MD thing down to a science lol. Atleast that's what my partners tell me. They also say I'm a leprachaun lol. And if I hit a area it is swept hard. Yeah I did get the plate and key for it lol.

No problem on the programing tips. That's a great program to run. Takes a good bit to master it. But once you do it will run very well. Hope it helps you recover a few more items.

Thanks Nana, I'm glad I am someone's hero out there lol. I don't know what to say anymore. I just got a great grasp on the history around here. All my hard research is starting to come together. Took alot of yrs reading over maps and history accounts. Now I am having alot of sucess. I am able to read the land really well now from all the yrs of practice.

Once again thanks to all who viewed and supported my post. Good luck to all. There is still a ton of treasure out there to be found. You just got to look hard and where no one else has already. I try and search areas I know haven't seen a unit. Sometimes it pans out great.

First Kyle,

I went with the peroxide method. When I seen it was toasted really bad and no date was really there I tumbled it with dish soap and tank gravel for about 8 to 10 hrs. Then I lightly buffed it with mothers mag. Rinced it and let soak in olive oil. It almost made the date clear. Looks like 1817 1827 or 37. It has the line on the back under cent. Hope this helps. If it would have had that nice smooth brown patina I would have been able to get it nice with peroxide.

I, too, usually tumble my copper coins.  I do it just to bring more detail out, as you were trying to as well.  Most of the time, there is no date revealed.

Yeah you are right.

PA is tough on the coppers unless you get lucky and find some nice soil. Don't happen real often. You can also use vinegar but you have to watch them more carefully. It works well also in the tumbler. I like to get that crud off of them so they atleast display nicely. It's not like NJ were every copper looks great. I love LC to.

Yeah, Were younge pups on this site man. That's a good thing right now though lol. Glad I got into this at a younge age. I meet so many people who say man I wish I would have done this 20 yrs ago.

Ivan It was a great site man. We hit it pretty hard though. Pulled out over 100 old coins. I know there is more. Gonna let it rest for the winter. Then go back in the spring when the leaves are gone from the ground. It is heavilty covered right now with leaves. This area I think in general holds alot more treasure in the foot hills.

I've been looking over maps and aerial views hoping to come up with another hot spot or 2 around this area. Very wealthy old area. Doesn't seem to be hunted to much. Season is winding down though soon.

Thanks alot guys for all the nice replies on this thread

I left the 21 just the way it came from the ground. I also left the seated quarter the same way. I won't dare touch a rare coin and ruin it's value. I used a soft tooth brush and some warm soapy water. Didn't want to ruin the value of the coin. I leave the rare one's alone. The common one's I don't care I clean them up.

Thanks alot guys.

Yes, you are right. It probably was a old grove. It is just a beautiful place to sit and hang out. I found this one by accident. The best places I find usually are by accident. Wish it would have held thousands of coins. I bet there are more nooks around this area like this. Just takes alot of time and foot work to find them.

The detector made this find come to life. Hit a lone indian and a few coins one day on the way out. Made a mental not to return. When I did I started finding coin after coin. Then I knew I was onto something.

Thanks again guys for all the nice comments

Thanks alot John

There was literally no garbage man. Not a single tab and only one lone clad quarter. There was some foil wads and a few pieces of aluminum strips. Other than that it was all old coins and relics. One other thing was weird though. There were a bunch of strips of lead. I have no idea what they were being used for.

They looked like little strips of twisted up dough lol. There were a bunch of them and they read fairly decent. I'm sure there are a few more items under that soil. The soil was really rich and went down really deep with no indication of any clay. I'll let it rest and hit it again in the spring. Pulled out about 125 old coins over a 7 or 8 straight days of hunting it.

I have to tell you first and foremost that you are and have been one of the most valued members of this site and I believe also that you should have made banner. Could it have been an oversite ? I dont know...But I do agree that you should have been up there...and long before this.Your passion for detecting ,history and research shows in every one of your posts....your displays and photos are always top notch and its been a pleasure these last few years to see your posts. You are unbelievably awesome in your detecting skills and I would regret if you left.
I know that Tnet has changed ...some people leave ,others wander in and out and new members join. Over the past few years I have seen many changes,....some good ,some bad.....but to lose a member such as yourself who is always willing to share your knowledge would be a shame.
I hope you realize the friends you do have here and will reconsider.

Thanks alot guys

I decided to let it go. Some good people on here have made me see the real light. I think they should just do away with the banner. It creates to many problems. Lots of people on here have made great finds and they never made the banner. For example what if someone finds a 1916 D merc.

Then it goes up on the banner. Then a week later someone else hits one. Who wants to see the same finds on the banner posted more than one time. I know I don't. I think it should be for very unique items and one's that probably won't get found again. That to me is a banner find.

I will continue to post my finds on this forum. The real treasure for me is seeing how many times people have actually viewed and replied to this topic. It goes to show that there are alot of people out there who enjoy these finds as much as I do. This is a great place for me to shed some light on these great relics that have been hiding for hundreds of yrs.

Once again thank you to everyone. I hope you all don't feel I was out of line. I just got very frustrated and caught up for a moment. I'm back down to earth now and I will be back soon with some more great finds to view.

Late again!  Sorry I missed this post, but glad I caught it now!

Congrats on a great week at a superb site!!! thumbsup thumbsup thumbsup icon_king icon_king

Just reading your post almost made my hands tremble! Shocked Shocked

I hope one time in my life I come across a site like that one!

Oh, and about the banner, IMHO it's pretty meaningless.  I don't mean to take away from anyone who has made it with their great finds.  They all deserve to be up there!  It's just that there are so many really great finds that never make it that should.  The criteria are way too subjective, and for that reason it should go.

I noticed the street car tags, that could mean White Swan, Schenley, Kennywood, North or South, West View Park, or maybe even Cooks Forest (log cabin) but needless to say nice digs for the young guy. Can't imagine you diggin that stuff around the (Grove Rt 88) heh heh. If you really want a challenge look up Alliance Furnace my friend ,now that is something for you to research, take that to the bank and I mean that. (Not to many folks will be up to the challenge.)  That was the good ole days (Whites old days). Just a challenge from an old Pittsburgh guy from Mt Oliver/Carrick.  Again nice relics and coins, our season is just beginning.

Yes thanks alot guys

Funny it's  a small world. I grew up in carrick also. Lived in the south hills of pittsburgh most of my life. I live in the west side now. I love this city for hunting. Yes you really know your local history. I work right across the st from where white swan park used to be. It is now a hotel site. West view park is now a k-mart. Kennywood I'd love to hunt.

Schenley I have pulled coins from. I have found literally thousands of old coins left behind from the 4 major parks here. I still have one park that no matter how many times I hunt it it still is giving great finds. I will look up that alliance. If the grove wasn't under so much concrete I'd be digging out there also.

Thanks alot Kim,

You are right man. No big deal for this thread not making the banner. You all see what really goes on here. You guys have made this thread so big that it doesn't need to be on the banner. I have erased all my negative comments and will continue to post on the forum. Thanks alot for recognizing what great finds these are and a even rarer site.

Try and locate a untouched spot anymore is hard. They are out there and I have found them more than one time. But it is rare. They only come around every so many yrs. And when they do I really go to town.

Once again thanks alot to all that have viewed and replied. I'll be back next week with a followup post to this. Got some more nice finds to share with you all.

Thanks alot tony.

Put alot of hrs of research and hard work into this hobby. There is alot to still be found out there. You just have to put yourself in places where people were long ago.
