There Are No Sharks Here!

Detector used: Fisher CZ-20, Ace 250, BH 505, MP3 Digital

« on: Jan 13, 2006, 08:35:48 PM »

Hey Guys! I have a update on the WW1 era Dog Tag that I found last July when I was water hunting at a old swimming hole from the early 1900's nick named "The Shark Pit". As you can see by the first picture it was in bad shape when I found it. It had some hard crust on it that kept me from being able to read the last name & other info.. So I have been soaking it since July. I have not had a chance to do any MDing lately so I figrued I would pull it out tonight & try again to clean it. Well, soaking it did loosen up some of the crust as you can see in the second picture. George W. now has a last name & it ain't Bush! It's Gibson! George W. Gibson. It says the word "Captain" below his name & it now looks like it says "Signal Corps" & "USA" across the bottom. I am now going to try to find out more about George & see if I can find his family to give them back his Dog Tag! I talked to the local VFW about this tag a few months ago & they said if I could come up with his whole name they should able able to find his info. I will keep you all updated on what I find out!

R2D2, that's great.  Good luck finding his family.

What did you soak the tag in?  Have you had any coins soaking, too?

Rob,

Where did you find this? Is it near an old Army camp? I can try to find out more through the Army chain.

You're welcome civilman.

Unfortunately for the WWI records:

The 1973 Fire at the Natl Personnel Records Center (MPR)
On July 12, 1973, a disastrous fire at NPRC(MPR) destroyed approximately 16-18 million Official Military Personnel Files. The affected record collections are described below.

Branch Personnel and Period Affected Estimated Loss
Army Personnel discharged November 1, 1912, to January 1, 1960  80%
Air Force Personnel discharged, September 25, 1947, to January 1, 1964
(with names alphabetically after Hubbard, James E.)
 75%

No duplicate copies of the records that were destroyed in the fire were maintained, nor was a microfilm copy ever produced. There were no indexes created prior to the fire. In addition, millions of documents had been lent to the Department of Veterans Affairs before the fire occurred. Therefore, a complete listing of the records that were lost is not available.

Heres' one more George Gibson - from that same site that Stoney checked ( http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov ):

GIBSON, GEORGE W
CAPT AIR SERV SIG CORPS US ARMY
 DATE OF DEATH: 10/19/1932
BURIED AT: SECTION 7  SITE 8323 NH
 ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY
 C/O DIRECTOR ARLINGTON, VA 22211
 (703) 607-8000

It was the 99th (!) of 107 - there were 14 Geo W's!  Popular name, eh?

good luck finding the family

Looks like Roswellborn could have found something for you. Same name, Capt, Signal Corps, would be the best place to start dont you think.....
Hello Roswellborn, see this is your first posting, welcome to the forum, hope to hear more from you.

Hey Guys! Thanks for all the replies & help! That's what's best about this site, somebody's always willing to jump in there & do some research to help solve a mystery. I like a good mystery myself. So you can bet I'm on a mission to find this guys family & the rest of his story! I have some good leads already & are working them right now. In fact I may know who he is right now but have to confirm.
It may take a few days or things might fall together in just a few hours! When ever I find out more I will let you all know.
Good job Stoney & Roswellborn! Welcome to the forum Roswellborn!  If my leads don't pan out, I will follow up on the names & info. you guys gave me! Funny, I ended up on the same site as you guys & a few others! Like somebody said, that was a real popular name back then. Thanks again all, Rob

Thanks for the welcome, guys.   Smiley

I'm new to MDing, have an Ace 250 and have found wonderful, marvelous bent rusty nails and honest-to-goodness bent up pie pans in my back yard.  I think they were pie pans...  or maybe they were TV dinner tray thingys.  Kinda hard to tell when they're all bent up, y'know?

Hubby found the first and only pulltab so far.

Now, if it would only be nice weather on the days that I *don't* work, I'd be able to get out there more often!

good luck, and HH all
