Pete,
We are all looking forward to what you are teasing about.

I have had one other thought for you to consider.

At Old Salem (in Winston-Salem) there is a shop with two craftsmen who make pewter spoons from molds very similar to yours.  They make them for sale in the gift shop.  They are very good craftsmen.  Their molds have been made by taking castings from old spoons and then reproducing the mold from that.  They are, as I said very competent craftsmen.

There is likely a way for them to cast half a pewter spoon from your mold so you could see what it looked like.  They would have to make a dummy other half.  I think they could do it.

Or, of course, perhaps the Master you have contacted could do it for you.  You would be expected to post a photo of the result on here.

Just something to ponder.  Do a search for Old Salem and look around the web site, it is a well known historic site.
George buddy,That could get exspensive as I would feel like I need to send them out to you guy's like cigars. laughing9 laughing9 laughing9

Congratulations again man! It's great to see this archived this way, and I'd bet money this kind of inspirational find will cause a few  people to take a second look at relic hunting and preservation. It will really be something if a few existing very early spoons found in the U.S. can be matched to this  mold too. Great find! icon_thumleft icon_thumright

Moderators,
I've probably not acted very well again in the long run on this one! Cheesy  Not to justify my ways but boy this was another on the edge of the seat deal with this one. I've tried to understand how these things work even though it don't matter really as it is your call. But thats just my nature how I am. laughing9 And as days go buy and things are said you can ask my wife as I'm not very patient for a person. (just how I've always been). But it all worked out in the long run. Sure you all could have done with out somethings that were said and feel bad about saying them once again. So I'll take my FOOT OUT OF MY MOUTH once again laughing9

My congrats also timekiller on the banner.

This is actually my first post on the forum. I registered and have been 'lurking' for some months, reading with great interest all the finds being made, especially those of great historical import and implications.

All of the reading and research this sets me off to doing, I hope will keep my aging brain cells active enough to ward off dementia! I'm recently retired and have not detected since the mid-70s when I used a Garrett BFO and a Master Hunter TR.
35 years later I'm trying to get back at it. A couple of surgeries have slowed my beginnings, but I am determined to do it.

I got so frustrated reading everyone else's frustrations about the non-banner, that I decided yesterday I would write the site owner. I was sure someone else already had but figured I would worry him too.

Copied below are our emails is my email for your perusal.

I do not have an inkling that my email made any particular difference but it did go BANNER a short while after I wrote. My main point is this will likely happen again so perhaps after a reasonable time all involved could agree for some appointee (no need to flood the guy) to write webmaster@treasurenet.com and request him to investigate.

subject   Forum Question

Sorry to bother you but I read the forum several times everyday and watch with interest for the rare finds that turn up.

I applaud each one that is found worthy of making the banner. With regard to that, I wonder why it is that a rarity of the level of the spoon mold posted on Oct. 28 by 'timekiller'  still has not been 'officially' recognized.

This thread is one of the longest running I have seen in some time and the majority of the posts seem to center around why this hasn't made the banner.

People have voted and voted, but no banner.......in the meantime some less important finds have been posted and made it in almost no time.

I even see people posting in other threads that they are voting banner on the subject of that thread, but don't know if it will do any good. That reflects back on the spoon mold thread.

May I simply ask, 'what's the deal'? and request, along with the hundreds of folks chanting BANNER, please recognize this historic rarity.

Sincerely,
Brent Parks

Pete, what can I say? I've been without internet for 4 days, and I come back to find this exactly where it should be!

Congratulations on finding one of the coolest relics I've seen yet. It may look plain, it may act plain, but it speaks volumes as to the extent of use our ancestors had to get when they were first starting out in this new land.

It was an honor to serve our country, would do it again in a heartbeat. I was told that there was a huge Confederate camp (quit a few morehead city blocks long) around where the hospital sits. My hunting area was west of New Bern, near Clarks (lived on 90 acre's there, both Confederate and Union camp), I should be getting back down that way come Christmas timeframe to drop off my children at there mothers house in Wilmington, hope to get a few days of digging in.

What am I doing so far away from my Civil War relics?

Hi Timekiller...  Just to give you an idea of what a spoon from the die would be like I picked three out of
one of my showcases to show you.  I do have a spoon with an acorn on it, but just cannot find it at this
moment, I think it is stored in my garage.  We do find many spoons here in Holland, most of them, just
like in these photos in fine shape.  The reason is that they have been lost while washing dishes in a canal,
and we have many many canals here.  Deep in the water they are protected from air and oxygen, keeping
them just fine in our clay soils.

One photo shows the fronts of the three spoons, the other the backs.  The shank of your spoon mold looks
much like the spoon on the left.  That is a tin spoon.  The middle spoon is a bronze spoon, you can see that
they are much thinner than the tin spoons.  The right hand spoon shows a sort of acorn, but a plain nut
type.  I have also made some close ups of the tops...  The spoon die could also be a Dutch die, it sure looks
like one.

found these in one of my books.
Yea Cru, that's it, the pewter one.  Although the photo shows a worked stem, and the found mold
is just a square one.  Most of the silver and bronze had a much smaller (narrower) stem.  I have
never found a spoon mold, but did find a half of a mold for making a tin dog (or something like that),
a childrens toy also from the 17th/16th century.  It looks like some of the bottom is chipped away.
Its of course neat to see how they made that sort of thing back then.

Note: in the photo below it might appear that the dog is raising out of the mold, but actually its engraved
into the mold.  If you change your looking angle, or look with one eye it might change.....

I was afraid you had forgot about it.  Cheesy Sure hope he don't shave off some of the other half while he's shaving some off the top.  Undecided That other half could be anywhere within a hundred acres. May take years to find it. Don't worry though, we'll keep reminding you.  thumbsup

Just a update on this mold that I just recieved today. It is from the British Museum. And of another contact that I can find more out on maybe.
It is hard to tell from images alone, but the spoon mould does look as if it is made to produce a 16th Century type, with acorn knop and stem of quadrangular section, and the bowl shape would seem to fit for this dating. But it could date into the early 17th Century given where it was made. The Victoria and Albert Museum, Metalwork, could probably give you a close parallel and might be able to date it more precisely.

Yours sincerely

Just one last reply on this as I recieved it this morning.Although they told me it could take up to 30 day's it didn't and Thank Them For There Help. thumbsup I've got enough on it now to ese my mine.On it's age.Not that it wasn't on here just my nature to know as much as I can on what I find. thumbsup

Dear Pete

Thank you for you enquiry and for sending me these very interesting pictures. It is of course difficult for me to say anything definitive based on photographs alone but the acorn finial and roundness of the bowl suggest to me that stylistically a date of around 1600 would be appropriate. Whether the mould is genuinely of that date of course will be partly determined by the context in which it was found.

I hope this information is useful.
Best wishes,
Angus Patterson
