What is the differance with todays MXT and 950 coil and the older MXT with what appears to be a thinner coil? Is the coil the only difference or is the whole detector? Thanks

The machine is the same.  I believe they made the new coil so it could be cut open for repairs.

Oh ok., I appreciate your response. I was thinking of purchasing one and wanted to make sure there is nothing significant. Thanks!

The coil is the difference.  Sometimes these mail order places have decals installed to call a detector "New."  It is of course with the new decals.  I think I heard somewhere that the MXT had a new chip but have heard nothing about improved performance from anyone yet.  Yet, who ever said a new chip makes it better.  dontknow

The 300 has the bigger 12" coil.
And a different finish. Not worth the extra $100 for the 300.

The 300 is worth it if you wanted a larger coil anyway.  It is cheaper than buying the orginal MXT and then later paying more for the 300 coil.  If you were only beach hunting or had a whole field to hunt then the 300 would be a useful addition.
