"Deputies suspect foul play may be involved because there is no sign of him," she said. "Even if he would have been eaten by wild animals, there would be shoes and clothes left behind."
While searching for Capen, Maricopa County sheriff's deputies came across two prospectors armed with handguns in the desert, Burnett said.

The deputies took the guns from the men to test them to see whether they had recently been fired, she said.

Burnett said her son probably shouldn't have gone there unarmed, but he was a trusting "gentle giant," standing 6-foot-4 and weighing well over 200 pounds.

Finding a lost hiker is tough enough, but when you throw in the TH aspect, things get very unpredictable.  To add a glimmer of hope to this case, let me say that last year a similarly-sized and equipped search effort was carried out in similar New Mexico terrain for a Lost Adams seeker.  Two weeks - no clues.  Search was suspended.  A month later, the subject walked out of the search area on his own, in good shape, said nothing and left the area.  You never know.

B.C.,

Just a thought, but Jessie's mom was looking in on this Forum.  She may still be doing that, and your comments are way out of line.  Think of how you would feel if it was your son, and you read such thoughtless comments.

I hope you will give the lady some consideration here.

At this point in the search, it would be a blessing if his disapearance was a hoax or a publicity stunt. At least he would be alive and well.

The search as it stands is at a standstill. Search and Rescue units are doing little if anything and have gone into a recovery and information gathering mode. After over 100 persons combed the area around his camp and where they thought he might have gone, no clues were found or sign of him. A few persons are privately going out as time and weather allows, hopefully, one of them will run across something and end the nightmare for this family.

The recent storms that blew through Arizona have dumped a lot of water in the Superstition Mountains. The creeks Jesse would have had to cross, Tortilla and Peters and possibly LaBarge were running at flood stage during the storms and were not able to be crossed. They should be down again by today or tomorrow. With this water will come a very rapid growth of new grass and brush and tree growth making the search even more difficult. Areas of bare ground can have grass a foot high in a month after rains like Arizona just had. While hope for finding him alive has faded, people have survived incredible odds under incredible circumstances before. Hopefully others will be out looking whenever they can and their efforts will lead to his being found. In the meantime, my prayers are with Jesse and his family.

I don't know if Jesse's mother still looks in on this forum, but I doubt it. She is still very shook up from all of this and just wants answers/her son returned home. That is all. Believe me when I tell you she is still distraught by the whole thing. What mother wouldn't be?? Seriously.

She said to thank everyone who is looking, and she can not express how much it means to her. So thank you to all of you who are helping to find this guy.

Capen planned to spend a month searching for the gold mine. He had been there before to search.

Thousands of others have searched in the Superstition Mountains looking for the mine during the past 140 years.

In the 1840s, the Peralta family of Mexico mined gold out of the mountains, but Apaches attacked and killed all but one or two family members as they took the gold back to Mexico. In the 1870s, Jacob Waltz — nicknamed "the Dutchman," even though he was a native of Germany — rediscovered the mine with the help of a Peralta descendant, according to legend.

Violence has always been linked to the search for the mine. Waltz reportedly shot people who followed him whenever he ran out of money and returned to the mine for more gold. He died without revealing the location of the mine. Movies have recounted the popular tale.

Authorities have found skulls of prospectors with bullet holes in the Superstitions.

I thought this was his first trip into the Superstitions?  Also, I was not aware that Jesse had planned to be a month - do we have any details about what his plans were, other than to be home by Christmas?

Well I don't know whether to make anything of finding two prospectors armed with handguns - most prospectors carry handguns, they are lighter in weight and you rarely ever use them, so a handgun makes more sense than packing a rifle or shotgun, which can get to feel like you are dragging a cannon on your shoulder.  I (almost) always carry a handgun when out prospecting or treasure hunting.  <Not in Canada of course, only a long gun is legal there.>

Being a trusting person can indeed get you into trouble if you run in with the wrong people, but at this point I don't think we can make any conclusions concerning Jesse other than we have not yet located him

ALSO DEPUTIES AND SHERIFFS ARE MAKING THE SAME CONCLUSIONS! AND AGAIN! WE CANT CONTROL IT! SORRY AGAIN!

Conclusions and suspicions are two very different things; it would be normal operating procedure for law enforcement to suspect the possibility of foul play when a person goes missing, of course.  However without solid evidence that foul play occurred, law enforcement does not conclude it must have happened based on such things as have been discussed.  No need to shout amigo.

If Jesse were to walk out of the Superstitions tomorrow, won't those folks whom have been assuming foul play was involved look foolish?  We just don't have enough information to make any conclusions - other than no one has yet found Jesse.  I am not saying that something very bad is impossible, just that I don't think we (or law enforcement) have enough info to make ANY conclusions.  Comprende' mi compadre?

Remember that the family and friends of Jesse are likely following our discussions here and we don't need to make their worries any worse than they already are.  I have been out long enough that friends and family started contacting authorities (the RCMP) about where to look for me, and it is a tough thing for family to go through.  People have been missing for surprising lengths of time and survived to tell about it.  Brooklyn girl Helen Klaben and Mexican pilot Ralph Flores survived 49 days in winter Yukon wilderness living on melted snow, after their small plane crashed.  Jesse Capen could very well be alive.

Thanks Joe,

The pictures of the camp area are a little odd. I did not see a firering or firewood, maybe its just wasn't in the picture. The tent fly was was off the tent. The backpack was open and on the ground. One water jug was full and the halfway empty. Maybe there is a good explanation for my observations, thought maybe you could shed some light on it.

Thanks again

HI AZ.   Since it has been sooo long, Jesse will prob never be found.  His remains are probably hidden by either man or nature. That is a big country, all too easy to lose a single body in.  It is soo easy to trip, fall, or whatever  and to end up dead.

I personally have had rocks turn under my feet or break off while using them for one reason or another, ending up with sore spots, and at times a bloody head.  A matter of a few more oz of impact pressure on my head and I might not be here to post this, or even 'know' what happened.  It can be that quick.

A few years ago someone hiking up the mt near my town, here in Mexico,  looking for stray cattle, saw some clothes at the base of a huge rock. Upon investigating he found a skeleton still inside of them.  A further investigation found a Winchester 30 30 up on top of the rock with several fired shells, and some unfired ones still standing on their bases where he had placed them for fast reloading. the stock was in very poor condition.  I still have one of the fired cartridges.

This is within perhaps 25 meters of the main trail, in plain sight, traveled by cattle people almost daily, yet ??  Eventually it was possibly / logically established that he had been guarding the trail up the mt. during the revolution of 1911, and had engaged in a fight and was killed and tumbled off of the rock.  There was a Rev. cuartel up on top.

Soo, if everyone missed seeing this gentleman just off of the main trail in plain sight, it is reasonable to assume the same could apply for our Jesse.

In many ways 'I envy Jesse', if he has gone.  He ended up doing exactly what he wanted to do, persuing a dream.  That is infinitely better than going out with a slow cancer  or another malignant disease  etc. in a friendless hospital.

I have gone the Cancer route for a bit, I lay in the hospital for days too weak to get out of bed, only dreaming of getting back to my Sierras and Tayopa for a final trip.  I even visualized my grave out on the point with a fantastic view to the South, West and East.

But that is not to be for many years yet, I fully recovered, but every time that I go back, I remember my thoughts. I too, had become part of the Tayopa legend.

Jesse is 'now' a full part of the LDM  legend, I think that he would have liked that, short of actually finding the LDM , then again,              maybe he DID?

Cynthia,

The Superstition Mountain family is very large, and Jesse is on all of our minds and in our prayers.  The search continues for many.  Each time someone is missing in those mountains, we all feel the emotional tug to find them.

We are all touched by the pain we know you are feeling.  You are also part of that family now.  I believe you're more than welcome to contact any of us, at any time.

This Native American prayer has given many people comfort.  It is especially meaningful for one of the men who searched for your Jesse:

I give you this one thought to keep--I am with you still-- I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the gentle Autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift, uplifting rush.

Of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not think of me as gone--I am with you still--in each new dawn.
_________________________________________________ __

There are a number of variations to this poem/prayer, but the message remains clear.

Jesse is with you still.

Take care,

Joe, Cynthia, you are quite correct.  As the poem says they are still with us for a while.  In  my experimenting with the para normal I finally came to the conclusion that the physical body is something that we use here, but it is 'not us'.    Many times we lose parts of that body, even whole limbs etc.,  yet we continue as if they were still whole, we do not act as if the lost parts were the actual person, even if they were major parts, so we do not venerate them.

To some, I may appear to be callous regarding bodies, but that is not so. It is just that  I tend to put them into their proper prospective.  I remember the 'person', not the body.  To Mothers, their child will always be their baby, no matter how many years go by.  while they may see a mature body, they manage to retain the child image intermixed with it.  You know exactly what I mean Cynthia

This is why I no longer worry about the physical body as many do.  To me it is the person that I associate and visualize with, yes, but not the true person. it is just a conveyance for us just as a Chevy, Ford  or what ever is.

If you have ever lost a true close companion in an animal, you will be aware of this.  For some days after, you will find them rattling their food dish or something similar, some even manage to pull on your sheets.  They will manefest themselves to you in many ways. Unfortunately we are at fault, we cannot understand the many hints from them.  We still insist in our normal form of communication.

Cynthia, I am sure that IF Jessie is actually gone, if you look back, you may find that You have had some of these similar experiences.  Ways for Jessie to let you know that things are still ok.

When  I was critical with the cancer, I distinctly remember once  finding myself outside of my body in  a luminous opaque setting.  it was  a peculiar feeling, not of fear, but a sort of relaxing, comfortable feeling.  Somehow I knew that if I kept going into this misty surrounding, that I would never come back.  Then I remembered my wife that was soo dependent on me.

She had a psychological condition known as Agoraphobia.   She could only keep it under semi control by using me as her stability factor.  I knew that I could not leave her that way or without even saying goodbye, so I seemed to have made a voluntary will to return.  I woke up on the floor, at the time I was too weak to get out of bed Huh?

I believe that was the turning point in my complete recovery.

Tom Kollenborn had mentioned he was asked to write an article on Jesse Capen, and it can be found on page A-4 here:  http://www.ajnews.com/

The reason Pistol Canyon is mentioned, is because a well known Dutch Hunter had told some folks that he and a friend had tracked Jesse into that area.  I assume they were on horseback, and it was done well after Jesse went missing.  That gives me some doubt's that the man they were tracking was actually Jesse.

Just my personal opinon, so take that for what it's worth.

Don Jose and all friends of Jesse
Thank you for all your thoughts and vigilance for Jesse...

I am frail and vulnerable in regards to my son...some days I find myself flat on the floor in grief.
Other days I am stronger...talking to Jesse often and feeling some peace.

I have decided to keep Jesse's Jeep.  I will go to court to be granted a convertership on Jesse's affairs.
Early in December I sold my old Jeep in Marble Colorado..I could not afford to keep two cars...so I let the Jeep go......Jesse told me...someday I will be able to go back to Marble full-time and by my Jeep back...I sold it to a good friend....soon I will sell my Subaru impreza.

I know this may never come to closure...I hope some day to except reality and find Peace.
I accept that Jesse is gone...his body a vehicle to contain his one and only precious life.

I am honoured to be his mom.

I can't possible express my feeling for all who have not forgotten Jesse.
If I felt Jesse was abandoned and forgotten... I truly have doubts I would still be here.

I don't believe in angels...but I do know you all are my teachers...showing me compassion...
selflessness...dedication...and Love for are fellow human beings on this amazing plant earth.

With the most respect...

Cynthia

Cynthia - That's an incredibly touching post.  I can't imagine going through what you've been dealing with.

I pray that you find closure and peace someday, and I'm confident there are a number of people who won't forget Jesse and will keep their eyes and ears peeled for information.

Morning Cyn LUV:  Lovely post.  And just why don't you believe in Angels?  Jess may well be one, wish that he were mine looking out for me. Sigh.

Hello Mr. Lamancha,

I do hope all angles are with Jesse..watching us.

I do hope they are with my brother Paul...who took his own life on his 46th birthday...7 years ago... will be there to teach Jesse to fly.

I do have a long history in my family...it a long story...at 6 years old...things happened... and I will  never believe again.

I do believe in the moment...this moment...this very moment.

This is what Jesse is teaching us all..this moment...that is all we have... if we do not...we will miss our lives.

Hi Cynthia Luv:  At 6 years old ... things happened... and I will  never believe again??

hmmm   You have to believe, that IS life itself! Without belief nothing has substance or worth.  Jessie should have taught you this with his actions.

My mother always knew when I had  a narrow escape or was hurt, she even knew when I was  wounded in the war.  I often wondered just what 'else' she knew?  blushing.

I understand that Beth is somewhat Fey, to Oro's discomfort  snicker.

Have you finished with the automobiles?

I would agree with you! We are still searching out here. He will be found, it is just a matter of time.

Thanks again

on one of the pictures of the tent...there is a shadow of the tent on the ground..down and to the left.....now look at the containers on the left side of the tent....no shadow.

Ummmm, so you're implying that the photo has been doctored or that there's some huge conspiracy?Huh

Here's an idea, take a look at the photo again for more than a couple seconds and you'll notice that what you say is a "shadow" is actually the dark blue portion of either the tent bottom or some other part of the stuff that's there.

first of all....let me say...i know nothing about anything....

the pics look like he got camp setup...and that was it....

searchers may have pulled the fly tarp off to have a good look...the water jug was moved...the fly tarp sets now behind the tent...
the cook cans are too close to use...move them a foot or two apart and then cook your stuff...

thats was enough water 7.5 gallons...maybe enough for drinks and easy wash 3 or 4 days...5 stretched...
also there is no trash...

did he walk away to take a leak or dumpster...was he walking back to the jeep for more stuff...

6 ft 4 inch...and over 200 lbs....and he's ready....your not fighting this with your hands...

i live in central florida...i carry everywhere...walmart, gas station, 7-11, if you see me with a tshirt over my belt...

goin out there...the LDM...and i have been reading up on it...missing people, bodies being found....carry, one on the belt, one in the bag, and one in the Jeep...

*********Hikers in the hills east of Phoenix found Jesse's tent, wallet and binoculars Dec. 20th.*************

imho....

i dont think he stayed at the camp....just my HO....i dont think he spent the night..

lee

they need body dogs....let them trace the wind...and start recovering the remains for burial...
