before it got dark i went back to that gas station site the heavy equipment had finish grading the dirt for the day about a foot and a half down pushing it up in piles at the end of the property the foundation was still there all heavy stone to make a very long storie short because iam still in shock what i found in 7 different holes all around 7 to 8 inches deep ill try maybe tomm. to give better details 1 hole gave up 5 half's another had inches apart 3 silver dollars the rest of the coins was found all near by those finds .i can not believe what i found !! tg that bull dozier operator did what he did or i never could of got that deep with my DFX i need to shake his hand tomm.? lol heres some pics i took, before i detected early this morning found a few good things i went to work then back to the same spot again just a 60 minutes before dark iam so tired now but iam still staring at these coins . Total finds today 14 silver 1 IH and a small gold high school 1959 pin 10k . I think just off the top of my head the 1886 O Morgan is a key date coin ? and i just love that 1893 Colombian Half , also a 1850 Seated half dime i almost missed it , it took 3 times to see it in my hand in the dirt lol . these finds all where found hear where the old pumps used to be i think it was a ESSO station before that iam not sure . STILL IN SHOCK !! HH Jim

HH
Hi lonewolf not all where in the same spot the halfs where all in the same hole they fell out of the side of it after i saw the edge of just one coin i used my digging tool just above the coin so i wouldnt damage it when i did that all 5 half's feel out i still cant believe it lol the other hole the dollars where about four feet away 2 honey holes ? i think long ago before black top was used at stations around the pumps it was just dirt or gravel then years later it was covered over the dozier dug down about 18 to 20 inches removing all the cover i wish i had my camera today to show a few shots that will teach me not to leave it my bag , the dirt was really hard packed i guess years and years of cars going over it and down that far it was bone dry with all the rain we get here . Monday iam going back with my camera . HH Jim .

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.

Those are some awesome finds and by the looks of it that spot definitely hasn't given up all its goodies yet. I got one of those Colombian Halfs a couple of weeks ago from an indiviaul and did a little internet search on it. Here is a link to the site that gives quite a bit of info. on it http://www.coinlink.com/CoinGuide/commemoratives/1892-1893-columbian-exposition-half-dollar/It appears that the designers Barber and Morgan were in on the design of this coin. Great finds!! I have run a dozer for years and have "prepared" some pretty good hunting sites for myself over the years, but have never had one near that good.
One thing I've never heard anyone mention is the one condition under which a lot of coins were lost in the northern states. Back before these filling stations and parking areas were paved they were only dirt or gravel sure, but think about how difficult it was to find a coin dropped in the snow. I've dropped my key ring in deep snow before getting my car door unlocked and it's hard to find something big sometimes. By spring that coin is down in the mud or has been shovelled over to where the snow was piled up out of the way.

Could be the coins look so nice because they were dropped fairly recently. Could be a wife got mad at her husband and tossed his coin collection? Although once in a while I have seen silvers that came out of the ground in really impressive shape, so you might just have had some nice ground conditions. Nice coins, either way! HH, Rusted

Is it possible that someone lost a coin collection? That is possible sure but not recently seeing they where 7 to 8 inches deep after the plow took off a good foot or more , out here its always been a very old farm community back then people trusted coinage more then paper money a few old timers not that iam a spring chicken still have huge dollar coin collections they have showed me and a lot still dont trust banks its buried out in fields i bet ? A older farmer here told me a story once about how he cleared a field that wasn't used in many years his tractor plow unearthed a old 1 quart glass canning jar filled to the brim !! with silver dollars nothing before 1900 . WOW! They sure are nice no doubt. So just soaking them in dish detergent and water lifted off all that dirt even out of the nooks and cranny's of the coins? You're fortunate, I've never seen a copper cent clean up like that other than with peroxide but then it turns black. If anything, I'd have to agree with assuming that they're a recent loss from someone, but then again you say they were deep. Nice also that they're not really worn down and well used from circulation and all of them have nice full rims. Most of us are never so lucky! Congrats!

There were only 950,000 minted for 1892 according to the link 1893 Issue: The Philadelphia Mint began production of 1893-dated Columbian Commemorative Halves on January 3 of that year. A grand total of 4,052,105 pieces were produced (including 2,105 coins for assay purposes), but sales were nowhere near the levels hoped for by government officials. The Mint destroyed all of the unsold coins. That amounted to 2,501,700 coins which were melted. Still a neat coin

Congrats! [/quote Hi Diggin So far all the silver coins out here i found look wonderful its got to be the soil most copper is not so lucky except for 2 IH,s i found not a green mark on them even shinny but the c3rd one was very green and not able to clean it very good i guess it depends here we are surrounded by salt water its always in the air i have a perfect example of silver in the ground a long time here i found this French coin 1760 in a just plowed field back in early June all i did was clean with water and mild soap ill attach a pic . "ill try maybe tomm. to give better details"
Yes, it will be great to hear those better details. A group of well represented coins dating from all periods between mid-1800's up to 1944, coming out of the ground like this in five seperate holes, all dug at the same depth, and being in the vicintity of well travelled gas pumps is such an almost unheard of occurance that it deserves a whole article unto its own. In the meantime it might be very educational to learn how such coins can be so well preserved to the point of not bearing a single scratch.
Was the spot paved over? Was the ground soft and gravel-free enough so if the coins were "lost" they would not show signs of being tread upon as they sank down? Have locals been contacted to ask if the ground around the gas station was once a foot or more lower and then covered after 1944? (no, that wouldn't make sense because some of the coins would show scratches from being on the surface and walked or ridden over). Could they have been deposted in fill dirt? (no, that wouldn't make sense because they were all at the same depth). Could they have been intentionally buried? (I guess that wouldn't make sense unless someone were to dig five separate holes to bury them?)
Quite a mystery. Some more details might solve it (or they might not).

A beautiful find! I used to go to Mattituck as a kid also. The Polish farm kids who threw 100# potato sacks around all day would love to into town to hassle the soft city kids like myself. Drinking age was 18 then and I got thrown out of the bar called the "Apple Tree" more than once.
The soil is very sandy on Long Island perhaps that is why they look so good.

the Apple Tree Lounge yes. I'm pretty sure it's gone now. My Dad built a summer home on Cox Neck Lane in (started in '65 and finished in'71). We used to fish off Naugles dock or rent sciffs at Capt. Marty's.

congrates on the finds. A couple of thoughts come to mind. Could the coins have been preserved by oil /grease intentionally or petroleum residue in the soil since it was a filling station? Here in Cali all the dirt would be handled as toxic waste and hauled of to an incinerator. I worked in a gas station many years ago and the boss hated big silver cuz there wasn't a cubby hole in the cash box for them. My first impression is they were planted and possibly greased for preservation much like cosmoleane ( which, like Obama, doesn't exist according to my spell check) on a military item.

RonnieAZ:
Use a large coil and dig up odd signals. Those old coins are probably beyond reach of a small coil.
