definately appears to be a coin, but you'll have to soak it and clean it up for an i.d.

It sorta looks like a Lincoln in the first pic.
Have you done a size comparison?
It's definitely a coin, you can see part of an "E" in the second one...

Johnnyi is right, it will need to be cleaned up but from what I can see (or imagine I am seeing) it looks like a capped bust dime or half dime. I don't know enough about early coins sizes to guess for sure.

Soak it in olive oil for a few weeks.

soak a paper towel in olive oil and then wrap it in that for a week, and check it out.

Agree. Capped bust dime or half dime. I can see the E and the verticle stripes on the shield.  DCMatt
