hello I found this Eagle I button today at a farmhouse thats on the
1862 Atlas   I do know it's an infantry button with out the shank Sad
There are no words on the back only a "design" on the inner circle.
It's 16mm wide so i assume it's a cuff button  A wreath on one side
and 3 arrows on the other. What i'd like to know is .... is it CW or post
CW ?  And can the maker be identified by the design on the back ?
I hope you can see the front good enough, it was dusk by the time
i took these pic's

thanks for looking   and any info you can provide me    Mike

bigcypresshunter   i thought i saw words too after a toothbrush and water
rinse  seemed to me it was just a film of dirt (that looked like words) flaking
off  then i made my reply back to you and clicked POST an i got a warning
someone else( johnnyi ) replied while i was posting  sooo, i looked again and
it did look like horstmann  sooo, i did the Buckle Boy technique with a skewer
and like me    i over did it Sad    my user name oughta be  "the destroyer"
johnnyi  i'm sure you are right saying Horstmann ....... ?
i blame the soil here    but, i know too   it was my having no patience when
i make a find like this BangHead  i should've waited till tomorrow and took a
good look at it first
   IMG_6787_2.jpg

Sometimes you can take your the oil from your own skin and lightly rub the back of the button and it will darken the metal around the stamped words making them more easy to read.  Rub light though.

the arched top of the sheild helps in dating it somewhat as well --later era buttons had a flat top design on the sheild .

I dont think its ruined. There appears to be too many letters for Horstmann alone but I see clearly an "N". It usually also says PHILA but I dont see it. dontknow ...unless the N is an A.

Big Cy  i do see an H and a faint orstmann  could be H Horstmann and at the end an N
 like you see
I was looking at CW backmarks  and the only thing that ends in N is  H Horstmann & Allien
i'll have to take a better look at it tomorrow

                thanks for your help    Mike
