Hi from n/z..hit an old forgotten armed constabulary site around the 1860s and only had an hour but managed to find a bit of history ..not much to rave about but curious about the flat plate shown, it had the remnants of a brass bit on front and i wondered if any one would know of the like..I wonder wether or not it is a pack saddle bracket ??  also the old bit I was going to toss, but noticed the spiral twists on it which made it quite attractive to me..thanks for looking..

That looks like part of an antique padlock. Id have to search to find an exact match but similar to this one.

 That twisted bit was a servere remedy for a 'cold mouthed' horse that would not respond to more humane mouth devices .
