Hi all! I generally do not post much. But this is my oldest U.S silver coin I have ever found. I had to share it! I have been hunting Indian artifacts in this field for years, I just got permission to metal detect it too! I dug a lot of trash at first, some old buttons.  Then I got that signal, popped the plug and saw it was a silver coin, I said “please don’t let it be Spanish”. I am very happy with the shape it’s in, no plow damage!  I hope it has some friends. thumbsup

That's a fantastic find... Shocked  icon_thumleft

Great coin!  (BTW to Newt's post - these coins say "50 cents or half a dollar" on the edge lettering )  I am surprised no one mentioned the enormous die crack running through the top of the word "States" on the reverse - makes it even cooler, I think).  My first "big" find was a capped half so I always check them out on this forum - but yours is more than two decades older then mine!

Congrats,

Surprman

thanks all ,i still look at it  and cant believe it , it was a long wait . can any one tell the variety?

Congratulations on the banner! That is one beautiful half.

It appears to be an O-105, R2 (est.  500-1000 known). There probably weren't many more of this obverse/reverse die combo made before the reverse die broke. As noted by surprman, there is a long die crack on the reverse. It actually extends from the leaves near the 5 all the way around to the first A in America.

Also CRUSADER pointed out the die crack on the neck. That one may be the final straw before the die break. On close observation, that die crack runs intermittently from the first A in America (where the circular break ends) down through the bottom of the M in UNUM and then faintly appears in the field before showing up strongly across the eagle's neck.

I did not see other examples of this second die crack though the circular one is common.

Also, the lack of detail on the left (facing) wing, is a die strike weakness and not wear. On some examples the eagle's head is weakly struck also. There are a few strongly struck examples but most exhibit this characteristic weak strike.

Again, a fantastic coin.    icon_thumleft

Glad you took the time to wash it off and not rub it. That just drives me crazy when people find coins and start to rub them. Nice save.

Wow..great coin. Bust Halves are one of my favorites. You have a great find and a great addition to any collection. You may want to consider getting that one graded and slabbed by ANACS or PGCS.
