What does not make sense here...

I saw this ad on Craigs List, and after a while I realized something does not make sense...Can you tell me what it is?

I have a 1799 half cent in excellent condition. you can read everything on coin and has very little wear. I also have an 1868 us nickel in near mint condition. plus many foriegn coins dating from the late 1890's to the 1950's.. I am asking only 80 dollars on the 1799 half penny and 15 on the nickel. if you buy them i will through in all other coins for 50 bucks so a total of about 30 to 40 coins for 145.. or make me a reasonable offer. i have not looked up these coins they were found in an old bag in my basement. 1st com 1st get....

there were no 1798 or 1799 half cent pieces made and no 1868 "nickles" in 1868 they were called half dimes --warning , warning scam alert !!!

the guy is acting like a rube that found coins that doesn't know what their worth with poor spelling and all ---trying to sucker some greedy person into thinking they can take advantage of him.

any 1797 half cent even in very rough shape (AG-3) alone is worth at least $235 minimum and in good shape like he says  (say f -12 -- about $950)  

the 1868 half dime --he says "nickle" in G4 shape would be worth $55 --even a 1868S one in G4 would be worth $16

so if it were a AG3 shape 1797 half cent and a 1868 G4 half dime -- it would still red book at minimum 235 / 55 -- $290 -- which is double his $145 asking price ( with the foreign stuff thrown in free)

You win the prize!!  Good eye!  I only caught it after looking up the coins in my Red Book!

one error I might think rube got the wrong date --but with a dual error wrong date 1799 on the half cent and then wrong type 1868 "nickle" instead of "half dime " --- if in good shape as he says words "half dime" should be easily visible -- red flag

still check and see "in person"-- could be a totally messed up rube -- if the coins are a 1797 or before half cent and a 1868 half dime in decent shape their well worth $145

You might want to check that nickel thing again. The shield nickel was produced from 1866 until it was replaced by the V nickel in 1883.

Ask for pictures...especially of the barely worn half cent that doesn't exist...unless it's foreign?

Don't dismiss everything out of hand as a scam....use due diligence and protect yourself....but if you're in the area...it might just be worth a look.

If you can't meet at a police station or some public place.....keep your money.

opps my bad they did make the sheild nickle * in 1868 in G4 worth $20- as well as the 1868 half dime --still the 1799 half cent did not exist in the us ( now a foreign say british 1799 half penny is possible)--us money cents --british penny

I note the second time he says 1799 "half penny" * if so its british then -- at best about $45 --most likey

the 1868 us sheild nickle at $15 could be worth while . 

for the Record, I Once found an
AG 1795 lettered edge large cent
in a Box of Tokens & Foreign Coins
at a Yard sale.
When I Asked how much, I Believe he charged me
a Dollar for a Hand Full.

Point is Yes he Over priced the 1799

The Coin was almost a Slug
 the Letterd Edge was Clear, This is what Caught my Eye.
I Had to spray it with Spray Lube & Hold it just right
to see Detail on the Face. When I Told
the Dealer How I could tell the year he Didn't hesitate.
He looked at his Buying Prices & Agreed to my $100.00
Price. Couldn't Argue. This was a few years ago.

his Collection to get money to restore an antique Car.

good eye --been known to keep a "sharp" eye peeled myself -got a gold gilted dish set in perfect "unused" shape--- set of 5 small fruit / cereal bowls , 5 dinner plates , 2 large type rimmed "soup bowls" and 2 meat / serving platters for $5  that books out at "replacements" china website for $195 in value -- the meat platters run 32 each alone
