Posted Nov 20, 2009, 07:57:38 pm

Went out hunting a new site in "coastal" NC with a new hunting partner.  When we left we really didn't have a particular site in mind to hunt, but when we got to a decent looking site we were hunting.  There were the typical junk and iron signals.  We had been hunting about 15 minutes when I got a solid "dime" signal.  Being the first signal I was willing to dig thus far, I went for it.  4", still there, 8", still there, 12", still there!  Finally, I ran the MXT's coil over the hole to find the target had finally come out.  Using my pinpointer I uncovered a coin looking shape covered in dirt.  As the dirt started falling off I noticed it was definitely a silver coin.  I called for my new partner to come over.  As he started walking toward me I gently wiped the dirt off.  He was about 30 feet from me when the last bit of dirt fell off to reveal what the coin was.  I yelled, "WHOLLY F*%*#%$ SH#%!!!!!!  He said "What is it"?  I knew then I had uncovered a SILVER SPANISH COIN!  I still hadn't looked at it close enough yet to see exactly what it was.  My hands were shaking as I handed it to him.  He looked at me and asked, "Did you really just now dig this right here"?  He noticed my hands shaking and the HUGE smile on my face that answered his question.  Then he looked at the coin again and said, "1785"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously this is the oldest find I've recovered, and excluding a 1,084 Silver Dime Cache, this was my single best find, EVER.  This coin is in the most beautiful shape I've ever seen a silver coin.  It looks like the day it was created.
Enjoy.

Very, very nice!!   It's really amazing, I keep hearing it and saying it, but you really never can predict what you're going to find.  That's what makes it so much fun, I think.

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.

Great find!!!  No wonder your hands were shaking.....
Any idea of the value of the coin?   And, could you tell me the relative size of the coin.....don't have the slightest idea
about how big the Spanish silvers are?  (big as a quarter, big as a dime, etc.)   Again, great find..... thumbsup

Can't find it if you're watching tv at home, your machine isn't on, and the head of your detector is pointed up!!

The coin is the exact same size as a modern U.S. dime.  In fact, that's what I thought it was when it first appeared.
The coin was actually not found on the beach, it was about a mile or two inland right off the bank of a river.
Thanks for all the kudos.
