my friend John's birds are shown in the first two images
on the second image his game pieces are turned over to show the other sides of them
he found this stuff in 2008 and 2009

the last image shows the big one I found about eight weeks ago
we found the last little one about twenty years ago, note that it is complete (the handle is not broken off)
                      
I am adding another image, this is one that me and my friend Al found in my field

I also remembered this other one I will post

The Lord only knows, Lars.  But the folks south and east of you made enough of what they call bird stones out of slate that there's got to be some connection. I seem to remember that there are even bird-human composites engraved on shells from mound cultures.

The one on the far right looks like a snake more than a bird to me....... or is the beak tip broken? The eye placement is way different too.

I can only imagine it being a decorative item carried at certain times or events. It is work of art. Any effigy item that survives in my opinion is just about as good as it gets culturally.

this is another one I forgot about

it has part of the head broke off

the handle is all there and has nice engraving also engraving on top of the head
