Posted Nov 23, 2009, 11:20:18 am

Just got back from a spot Iv'e been digging for a while and moved to a different area. I have found a couple of colonial coppers and a 2 cent piece. Haven't found any old silver. I have slowed my coil swing down and got a faint, but solid signal 6 inches down. My whites M6 read 1,10. I was hoping Indean Head or Silver dime. I dug the plug then scooped some more dirt from the hole. First thing I saw was a cool piece of an old plate. Got excited, then brushed the dirt away and saw the edge of a large silver coin. Picked it up and saw the shield and couldn't believe my eyes. I had butterflies in my stomach. Made a couple of phone calls then tried to detect a bit more. I couldn't concentrate so had to head home. This is now my favorite find. Finding this coin in Boston makes me wonder who's hands this coin could have passed through. John Hancock, Paul Revere, Samual Adams, the list goes on and on. Historical value= Priceless!!!!!!
Thanks for looking.  icon_thumleft

Don in SJ wrote this on what is it. Interesting history behind these coins. They were not meant to leave Spain.
"Here is an excellent article on Spanish Pistareens, which is what your coin is,  they were lighter weight, thus less valuable than the Spanish Silver minted here in the New World..............
http://data.numismatics.org/cnl/Pistareens.pdf   I recommend reading the entire article to further understand the Spanish Silver useage in early America .

Thank you fellow mass hunter. Just hope to find as may tree coins and silvers as you one day.  headbang

Ivan Salis posted this info,
"the lighter weight coins were for spanish homeland use -- thus they were short changed --they were never mean for use outside the home country of spain --spain in effect was short changing the local people money wize with devalued money with less in silver value by weight than the money in their colonies. -- thus when colony taxes got "paid" spain got paid in full silver value coinage which spain later watered down % at home --in effect "making" more money with less silver. --spain did not want the colonist to pay their taxes with this "shorted" money or esle the govt was the one who got short changed value wize." icon_thumleft

That's a great find.  Tongue

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.

Finding this coin in Boston makes me wonder who's hands this coin could have passed through. John Hancock, Paul Revere, Samual Adams, the list goes on and on.

Or even Mark Wahlberg or Matt Damon...they are historical Boston guys too... dontknow

 tongue3

Congrats on rescuing that beautiful treasure of the past!

That is just freaking awesome!  Can only dream about finds like that where I live.  However, next summer we'll be spending 6 or 7 weeks in MA, so I hope to get some land hunting in on top of the beach hunting I'll be doing.

Congrats on making the banner!
