What can I say that hasn't already been said. Other than its a true Museum piece & a great asset for further research. Just think if we could match up UK found Pendants to that mould! Love the right angled bar which would have created the hole for the pendant, I wondered how that worked We need another mould on the banner, my votes in!

"It is a bronze mould for viking age pendants, most likely of gold or silver."
Dane, I just realized that it is bronze. Wouldn't bronze have too low a melting point to be used for anything except to cast tin, pewter, etc? Are you absolutely sure this mold is bronze?

I can not use it to make pendants as it is an ancient artefact and must be given to the museum. The archaeologist in the museum will make the further investigations on it.

Help me visualize this. Would there be another half to this mold, or, would it be poured flat? The top part looks like a "sprue" and the cross piece a "riser" which would mean there would be another half to the mold.
Awesome find!

Congratulations on a well deserved banner! As others have said, this is definately a museum piece!
Dane, I've been wondering how a bronze mold might have been used in the process to create ornaments which had higher melting points then the mold, such as silver and gold. From what I've read, silver, gold, and other metals with higher melting points would destroy a mold made of a lower melting point substance such as bronze. Anyway, it seems that during he Viking age many ornaments of gold were formed using the lost wax process. It might be possible that medalions such as this which a mold suggests were "mass produced", were made using the lost wax process also, but the process began with wax models formed in a bronze mold such as this. Then the wax product from your mold would go on to be used in the lost wax process??

That is indeed a possibility, and I tend to say, that would be the purpose of this mould !! An other aspect could be pendants made of lead, which are also known from that time about 8-900 AD.

It seems to me that they would not need to cast a wax piece with the hole for the pendant to hang from as that would easily be made after taking it out of the mold.

Kind of random question:
Did you use the tesoro Vaquero to find this...?
I have the Vaquero narrowed down to one of my 2 or 3 choices for my first detector...have heard nothing but outstanding things about it....
congrats on the find

Fantastic find, congrats.

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.

excellent..only confirms that me being non-impulsive and taking time to research my first detector paid off...can't way to get my 'V' ! Congrats again on the great find...
BTW I hear all the signals sound the same on the Cowboy.... or at least similar...once you learn the machine are you able to tell when the target is something greater than tabs/trash...or is it truly a ding and dig?
