you could try your local legion post or maybe Dept of Veterans affairs.
bad part is they used that same medal for quite a while,  so it may be tough to
find the actual owner.
the medal was first activated in July of 1960 and discontinued in 2005,  but is currently being reviewed for reinstatement

Actually... it's back now... just within the last several months.

PM me the name and I'll see if that person is still active duty.

Could be Army or Air Force, see link below. Don't know if the AF engraved theirs and if so when they stopped. My Dad was in the AF from 1962 to 1988, I was in the AF from 1986-2008. None of his or mine are engraved. AF GCM was approved 06 Jul 1960, but wasn't made until 01 Jun 1963, between 18 Sep 1947 (Birth of the USAF) to 01 Jun 1963 AF personnel were awarded the Army GCM.

I'm not real sure, but I think it might be researchable through the Department of Veterans Affairs. They may have access to DD214 paperwork(section 26) and can at least narrow it down by the name and location found. There were many more GCM awarded than say, Bronze Stars, etc. I don't think that they will give out names with addresses. With some coaxing, you might get them to forward YOUR name and address to potential owners to be able to reply to you.
I'm guessing Vietnam era...

Good luck and best wishes,

I know you covered the name up but sometimes you can date those by the type of engraving.  Also with a name you can look it up and maybe find his record in the NARA.

This might help.  http://www.wartimecollectables.com/zengraving.htm

More than likely that's an Army Good Conduct medal.

Medal is home now, The son and the family were really grateful to get it back.
I asked what he could do, money or what ever.
I told him the only thing he owed me was......
"If someone ever says people that metal detect are stupid, of crazy or something,
That he would set them straight."  thumbsup thumbsup thumbsup
He sent me a good link on that type of medal if any one is interested.
Looks like they are older that I thought.

Got an E-mail today from the son. He had it put into a plaque along with another New medal a friend gave me, and a pic of his father when he was young. The only thing the person that did the plaque put his fathers medal in wrong. They both have the eagle showing. The fathers medal shown have the side with his name on it showing DUH!! He's taking it back first thing Monday to have it fixed.
On the back there is a Goggle earth pic of the location where I found it, and a pic of what the site looked like when i found it. He also put my name on it too.. Pretty cool I thought icon_thumright icon_thumright icon_thumright
