Thanks to my digging partner Monkeyboy this may be my best find ever. The pitdigger and monkeyboy clans hit the woods at a spot that was settled in the 1700's. Monkeyboy has popped out some super early coins that go back to the 1600-1700's over the years. After a few hours of popping out some tombacs, cast pewter and flat buttons I got a huge signal in an area where a natural spring was in the woods.
A few inches in the rocky wet ground I pulled out a large brass disc. The water gave this thing a different looking patina and it was covered in dirt so I carefully put it in my pack and kept digging. I had no idea what I had just found. Once we all took a break I pulled out the disc and handed it to monkeyboy. With a little water he slowly started to see some markings. Without hesitation he yelled SUNDIAL!!! Unreal. All of the roman numerals and markings are hand-engraved with excellent detail. The compassrose is hand engraved or stamped N,S,E,W. I was ecstatic!
After getting home I used a little water to continue to remove the mud and have done nothing else to it. After some research I found out that the early american settlers would use sundials instead of more expensive time pieces. Could be my best find to date!

by looking at the small hole between the n and s I think it had a compass as well so it would be lined up to give a correct reading. that is very cool indeed, thank you for sharing.

I vote banner. Wonderful historical piece. I would suspect it is more early colonial and maybe a 1600's piece than 1700's. Keep looking down the stream. You may find more of the parts.

I can honestly say I just never get jealous when other people find great relics.. I just love seeing them come out of the ground... BUT this one... I'm jealous!!! ;-) Great find... Banner... all the way. This is the same spot I dug the 1809 Half Cent.. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,294714.0.html ...stuff comes out in really good shape here.... so that puts it in some sort of date context.. that and all the buttons have been 1700 - early 1800s .. Great Find... MB

This is a really great find! Looking closely, I would wager that this sun dial was homemade as the Roman numerals and lines are not straight and therefore not machine made. It looks like it was etched by hand. Even the holes aren't uniform and looked punched out by hand. This would make it more unique as it wasn't mass produced in England and possibly an early American settler made it. I could be wrong on this but it sure looks homemade. Fantastic! Dave.

Wow, thanks everyone for your comments. It is definitely a banner find for me! After examining closer it is definitely hand made and hand etched or engraved. I didn't notice it until you guys pointed it out but it also does look like it was a compass as well. I will take some more photos of it tonight and post. I do believe I may have to create a custom display box for this one and hang it prominently on my wall. I really want to do some more research on this.

Thank you all for you banner nominations. I just found an awesome article from a historian on time pieces. Read below if interested. "A sundial is one of the oldest—it may be the oldest—of all scientific instruments. It depends on the Earth's rotation, although when it was first contrived, probably before 1500 b.c., its makers believed that the Sun revolved around a stationary Earth. Either way one envisions the heavens, the practice is the same: the Sun shines on the dial, and a protruding "gnomon" (from the Greek for "one who knows"—presumably one who knows what time it is) casts a shadow among the hour lines marked on a dial plate, indicating the time. What could be simpler? Or rather, what could be more deceptive than the apparent simplicity of this device? For in order to make the fallen shadow even approximate the correct time, the dial must be laid out with regard to latitude north or south of the Equator where it is to be used, respecting the changing high point of the Sun in the sky from day to day over the course of the year and the variable speed of the Earth's annual motion....."In the 1700s, after the inventions of the pendulum clock in The Hague and the balance spring in Paris inaugurated the era of precision timekeeping, sundials achieved even greater importance than before. "Just as the computer increased the need for the paper that some people thought it would replace," Andrewes says, "clocks—and later watches—greatly increased the demand for sundials, because every timekeeper needs, at some point, to be set correctly." A clock or watch may keep time, but only a sundial can find time—a distinctly different function—by deriving the hour from the relative positions of the Earth and Sun."...Written # By Dava Sobel # Smithsonian magazine, January 2007 Read more: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/sundial.html

Boy, now that it's cleaned up bit more you can really see some detail. I like the scribe lines. It looks like the rosette letters are punched, as well as the gradiations. The numbers look to be a combination of punched and scribed. Looks like the center point was attempted more than once which makes it seem more personal to the craftsman than some manufactured piece. Just keeps looking better. Is it possible to see the flip-side of that disk?

If you happen to come across anything similar to mine I would be interested in seeing it. It was dug with stuff dating mid. 1700s and not later than 1820. I was hoping it was a counterfeit coin when I first seen it, but a sundial is cool too.

Great find!
I think the shadow would need to fall from the center to the number to show local time. What would the holes be used for?
While on the subject of time.... As the railroads worked their way West the US had well over 500 time zones. This was because it was considered to be noon when the sun was at it's highest point in the sky, which was when the sun was also due south. Each railroad station was on a different longtitude. Of course there were clocks then and local time was set by the sun at "Local Apparent Noon" (LAN). It wasn't until the telegraph was in use that there was a way to syncronize clocks in the time zones we use today.

What little I know about antique sundials, is that they were often made by clock makers, and were very often signed, because clock makers were in guilds , at least in England. If this was imported at that time, then you might find a signature lurking beneath the patina and dirt, that then would be able to give you a better dating.
Good luck.. It is a one beautiful piece of history.

Congrats on a great find, I'm not well versed in the art of sundials but someone at the North American sundial society surely is. Here is the link. http://sundials.org/ Try and contact someone there and maybe they can help. Again, congratulations on a great find!

Very cool dial you got there P.D. I would try cleaning it up and mounting it someway. To find the missing part, would be awesome. It is at least a wall hanger!

This has been an exciting couple of days and all of your comments have been great to read. Thanks goes out to chemist100 for hooking me up with the NASS website. This national sundial association has a ton of info and will also be holding their annual conference on the MALL in Washington DC in October. There is some awesome history associated with early american sundials and hopefully I will here something back from them this week.

Thats great, I hope you found some useful info. Keep us posted when you hear anything!!! You said in your post that you found this where a natural spring was, it might be possible that the area used to be used as a garden. I read somewhere that these things were placed near gardens and fountians. You should really try to see if you can find the other peice. Again, cool find!!!

Spend your money and time wisely for once they are gone, you cannot get them back.
