Nice. I found a gold seam along a piece of broken bedrock in a stream one time but the gold was paper thin like it had been plated. I also picked up a piece of quartz on C Street in Virginia City that had a decent silver clump and vein going through it. The darkness in the quartz beside the gold might be a silver salt.

Nice chunk, I'd say it would be worth alot more, as a specimen left whole, than it would for only it's gold content.

This should answer a few questions about Pyrites there's a link also , below is whats quoted in the link . Good luck great find It can be tricky to the beginner! Below I have added some pictures that show the differences in common pyrites found in Arizona and Arizona gold. I detected all the gold you see in the pictures below with using either a White's GMT or a Minelab GP Extreme. Click the pictures to enlarge them. Some of the pieces of gold pictured below I have never shown before making this web page. All the gold below is specimen gold they are not nuggets. The reason I used specimen gold is all of the pictures I am sent always have "host rock" in them. You cannot "flake" gold off a rock with a knife, if you hit gold in rock the rock will break/shatter but the gold will flatten/bend. Pyrite if struck with a hammer will shatter/crumble. http://arizonagoldprospectors.com/goldandpyrites/metaldetector.html

Hope you marked where you found it. This might start a new "lost mine" legend.
That rock has tumbled down the river quite a ways. See how rounded it is? It's been rolling for a while so finding the source of this Gold could take a long time. I'd say it's worth the hunt though

I'll bet if it is real, he hangs on to it and his great grandkids use it as a doorstop or the key hide in the front flower bed. If it isn't real, he sells it to someone who thinks it is and makes a bundle.
At least that's how it would go in my family.
Good luck either way. It would make an awesome doorstop.

Strick calm down bud!! !I hate to be a kill joy but.......(well first hey nice specimen!)a 20 lb rock doesnt mean squat!!!What happens if you have a 100 pound rock with a little gold showing??Does that mean I have 25 pounds of gold? :icon_scratch:Not.There is a formula to figure it out and it doesnt employ water, and it is a guestamate. The only true way to get an accurate idea of whats in it would be to crush and pan...which I dont recommend. You are not going to get $1000x 20 either if you do send that buyer my way!Collectors whom pay specimen are not buying right now,I cant blame em.The finder sounds knowledgeable so I am sure he will do whats right.I would get an X-Ray of it were it me

are you Sure ? By Definition: "iron pyrite" aka "iron sulfide" is an Iron. A good Gold detector Should pick up Iron

Man, all the years I MD'ed, panned, sluiced and dredged the Bradshaws, I never saw one of those. At least not where I went.. (From Rich Hill to Lynx Creek, to Cleater to Castle Hot Springs) Grats on a GREAT find!!

Being a prospector I'm really anxious to hear what came of this rock. Any news? Sure got quiet considering it's a possible 20lb gold impregnated chunk of earth. It doesn't look like gold to me but I want to hear the outcome.

If it turns out to be real, keep quit until you check out where it came from and then file a claim, if you can in that spot. Keep that spot to yourself! OH" don't crush it... If you look back at all the large nuggets dug in the old day's there are very few left.

Nice find, dan. I guess nobody read your first reply where you said you acid tested it and it was "GOOD" The only way to tell how much gold is there, is by specific gravity test. .

I did notice the acid test reference, however would put more weight on the detector testing positive. I am curious whether DanB tried to test the specimen for flakes as referenced with link by Deepdiger60? I think I did spot DanB in a brand new mercedes this morning

Thank-you for all your comments, suggestions and speculations, I have been out of town on business for the past few days. Now to get down to the real business......this gold infused rock.....here is how it all came about....I have a few friends who have adjoining mining claims in BCC, after the resent flooding we went to check out the damages and to see how things at the river have changed. I am driving the lead jeep with my friends following in their jeep, as we descended threw their claim towards the river, I stopped at the new deposit of material at the trails end and where the rivers edge begins, before driving out into this new river bottom I decided to walk out and make sure all was safe, I took about ten steps out on to the rocks and started looking around, as I looked down at where I was standing, at the same time my friend who owns the claim next to my friends claim (which we are on) says whats that your standing on?.....I moved my foot and picked up the rock.......as I dusted it off.......our jaws dropped...... none of us could believe what we saw. We couldn't believe how heavy it was for its size.......and that color.....wow ( HIGH FIVE) ( HIGH FIVE) then....we put the rock in the jeep and looked around for more........that was the only one with gold, looking at how well worn it is, I can tell that it has traveled quite a ways down stream. Now since there was six of us there when the rock was found, we discussed as a group and we decided it was best to divide up the rock and it contents evenly amongst all of us.....I know that by dividing up the rock it will make some people cry......we thought about selling, but opted out.....the general consensus was to crush and divide evenly......so, so be it..... If I had found it solely, it would have been a specimen for life. When we got back home we tested the rock with Nitric acid.....it tested POS (+) for gold, we double checked with a metal detector, the metal detector screamed, we then took hot rocks and other gold in a vial that we found from panning and tested it against the metal detector to hear the difference in sound when each was passed under the detectors head, the rock of gold and the vial gave the same sound.....while the tone of the hot rock was different......now we knew we had the real thing. As far as the total weight in gold goes, we are going to stay tight lipped....sorry. Everybody is happy with their share.....So now it is time to move on and look for more gold.....I know somewhere out there, there is more gold to be found.....and I will start looking again tomorrow......the hunt for gold is addicting and a lot of fun...so get out in the great outdoors and go find some color and have some fun......I am glad I was able to share pictures with all of you fellow treasure and gold seekers.....This just goes to show that there is still plenty of that AU out there just waiting to be found.
best wishes and happy hunting

I'm gonna hop on this bandwagon and ask you why you won't mention how much gold is in the rock It's not like you're a millionare now if you weren't before. That doesn't even make sense to break it up and split it up either The consensus was to cost yourselves thousands of dollars?

not sure.....have to do more tests....just found it less than 5 hrs ago......acid test says its good, I am going to have to cut a piece off crush it and throw it in to the blast furnace and do an assay....that will take me some time.....I am wondering the same as well.
db
Yikes! Don't crush anything! Get some Hydrochloric Acid and put the whole rock into it. The acid wil eat away all of the matrix and leave the gold in the exact shape it sits in right now. Some of the most valuable pieces of gold are those which are the end product of acid etching. A friend of mine in our prospecting club found a rock that also set his detector off in a big way. He etched the matrix away and inside was a perfect birds nest bunch of wire gold. That little rock of his was in a museum for a while in Denver and eventually he sold it. I think he ended up asking way too much, but got right around $10,000 for it. Think before you cut and crunch. Don't go for the simple gold weight by spot. Go for the beautiful wire gold inside the rock.

Also if you dont understand being tight liped or Dollyin some gold up dont be rude just cause you didnt get your personal lolly pop.

Great find, but what a short sighted mistake. Why not sell the entire specimen for way more than the gold value and then split that amount? This is a rare speciman, devalued hundreds or thousands of percent by splitting it. Seems like a panic move. Sorry to be critical, but if you found a Babe Ruth bat you wouldn't cut it to even pieces, geez.

You seem quite new to here, we have seen it all before. You give me a very good recent that after posting pictures on here that he needs to be tight lipped about the money they split? They only good one I can think of is Tax dodging... Personally if that was my rock and saw how much gold was in it ? the Government does not need to know everything it was fantastic to see it posted here but the cats out of the bag now .

Y'all might be overlooking that Dan is a rather savvy fellow... Review the excellent posts he's made in the past, for his qualifications.
I'll say one thing... he treats his friends and partners very well, as they do him. ...he picked it up on the other guy's claim... he had no right to do so. the claim owner was good enough to grant a three way split.
Maybe Dan was out-voted 2 to 1 about crushing the rock to settle the score ?
I think it's wonderful when folks post pics of their nice finds here on Tnet for us all to see. To press for more, and specific information in open forum is kinda rude. You want it? Send him a PM with a cash offer, as is.
"Loose lips sink ships."
...and from a post I made in the past... I recall the name of a user who is now gone.
IIRC, It was GoldFever who posted certain finds he had made which triggered an investigation into his affairs that I suspect he may not have survived, financially. He has dropped from Tnet, at least.
Dodging taxes is punishable under our system of law... Avoiding them is not. Why set yourself up to be investigated ?
I think it would be a fun find even if it were pyrite !
