Posted Feb 02, 2010, 02:06:44 pm

Thanks to DCMatt of ID'ing it as an Imperial Navy Award Badge, I dug some more and found it to be a Japanese imperial Navy Bombardment Badge awarded during WWII.  According to the following site http://www.ww2awards.com/award/66  the number of these badges awarded is unknown.  I think this may be a heck of a find in Illinois.  I found it near a very old foundation, where I pictured in my head would've been the clothesline behind the house.  I thought it was junk at first, but actually might be a valuable find.  I'm glad I posted it in the whats it forum.

I hadn't posted it in todays finds earlier, as I thought it was just some junk jewelry, but then it got me thinking.

I'm really excited on this find now.

Thanks for looking and HH!  thumbsup

UPDATE:  Found out a little more information on the rarity and value of this badge.  Just follow the links below.  Man am I happy!.

Gunnery Proficiency Badge (Bombardment Superior Badge)
Instituted on September 8, 1911 (Meiji 44)

Awarded to NCO sailors who passed tests in naval artillery. Mostly awarded to gun crew commanders,
firers, ammunition carriers, and heavy artillery aimers (those who aimed the artillery

Thanks to zafire69, one like mine sold for $395.00:   http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Japanese/photos/J006359.html

Just out of curiosity, what would the numbers be for at the bottom of the right shell? It appears to be a 1 9  or 1 6?? icon_scratch   Maybe it was stamped for the number that was given out. Who knows. Or maybe it is soemthing I am just seeing and it is really not there. Nice find though, and I would gather that it is quite rare. Lets see if we can get this verified and get this on the Banner! thumbsup        jgas

I haven't paid that much attention to that as I was too excited.  I will check and see if there is actually something on the right shell.

I found it last week wednesday.  One week ago today.  I found it about ten feet away from an old foundation with two wells near the Chicago Rvr.

I will post pics of the foundation and wells the next time I head up there, hopefully next week, and the spot where I pulled the badge from.  thumbsup

Holy Moly Guys!  I can't believe I made banner.  Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!  I still am so freakin excited.  I can't believe I thought this was a piece of junk/costume jewelry at first.  But then again it seemed too heavy and old.  What a GREAT piece of history to be recovered in our area.

It's still a little dirty, but I don't want to clean it any more.  I can see the brown enamel coming through the dirt, but I think I'm goin to leave it be for now.   WoooHooooooo!

I think that a 50-50 lemon juice and water would clean that up nice. It's what I use on dug buttons. Works great and doesn't harm the relic. Use a Q-Tip and don't scrub. I think you will be amazed at the results!    Good Luck.  Hogge thumbsup

Congrats on the banner.  thumbsup

You are going to get a lot of advice on this pin, so here are MINE.  laughing7

(1)  Don't clean it anymore.  It looks great in your photos.
(2)  It deserves a picture frame display with a short explanation on what it is written on a card, included in the frame.
(3)  Keep and display it;  don't sell it.  You couldn't get enough money to replace the excitement you've gotten so far nor to replace the "uniqueness" of the pin.

Now for some "what ifs":

--what if it was a war souvenir brought home from the South Pacific?
--what if it was handed down to a son or daughter?
--what if it was lost by a child who was "playing" with it in that backyard?

The question of how it could get to Illinois is probably tied to the fact that one of the Navy's largest training bases was located in / near Chicago for YEARS.  So there are / were a lot of Navy folks living in the area who were on active duty as well as retired.

" 'Polls' are surveys of uninformed people who think it's possible to get the answer wrong." .........Ann Coulter

Stunning find!!  icon_thumleft
I can't help but think of the men who wore this badge. How many badges lie buried with their owner on the sea floor or on some forgotten island deep within the overgrowth. I also think of the men who put them there. Much thanks to all American military members, past and present.

One of the most interesting finds I've seen and I'd say from the photo's that the anchor definitely has the look of real gold to it.  Grats on the banner and on a very unique find.
