I've been lucky enough to get a few places to hunt around Charleston. Most are soggy bogs that have been logged, horse pastures, and other "great" places.
I take what I get.
I hunted a timbered bog this past weekend and wound up with one flat, slick button and some crap.
I looked at the pile on the table this morning and decided to look at it one more time and then toss it. I washed stuff off and was tossing it in the trash can.
I washed this piece off and thought I could see some letters or something so I thought I could tell what telephone pole it came off of. So I used a little cleaner on it.
Letters started to appear - "S" then "ER" and a "18" I hit the floor. I picked myself up and finished cleaning.
It ain't in the best shape, but it's a SLAVE TAG!!!!
Gotta be my best find of the year. They say compared to finding these 30 miles from Charleston, gold coins are easy.
It's ugly. But it's mine and I HAD to share.
Daryl - still shaking a bit

servant 1826 (year) -- would be nice -- since it would date it age wize -- but wouldn't a number of some sort be needed to show who's slave it was ? -- since the "tag" was proof of ownership .

Looks like an authentic 1826 slave tag to me. Congratulations! Shame some of it is missing, and that may impact the ability to really "restore" it as we don't know what information was lost on the missing part. A great find and a great piece of American history.

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I'm humbled. It is just one of those finds that shakes you up and then you think that you almost threw it away. WOW.
I do plan to have it restored if possible. Since it is an early tag, it is supposed to be a "square" tag and not the "diamond" shaped one with the hole in the top corner. It should also be a bit smaller than the CW era Charleston tags.
I talked with a friend of mine in Charleston about the tag and he said that it will have a mark on it - "lafarge" - or something like that and that all the tags of this period were square/rectangular. He also said that at the time these tags were used - 1826 - it was pretty common for them to be "defaced.". They would be bent, cut, nailed, etc. The slaves would risk punishment for losing a tag in order to get the satisfaction of "beating it up." Just what they were doing at this point in the history of slavery.
So thanks for looking and sharing in the find. It is something I surely wasn't expecting.

check into getting it restored, so far ive not found a Lafar 1826, and even with the tear in it it would be worth insuring from reading about slave tags, they were only made in charleston sc, and the makers of the tags worked for the auction house by contract, here is a pic of a 1821 tag made by, John J. Lafar one of 8 tag/badge maker, won the contract for making badges for 24 years. some history, on slave tag/badges Lot 2486: LARGEST MOST COMPLETE COLLECTION OF GENUINE CHARLESTON SLAVE HIRE BADGES EVER OFFERED. the pics wouldnt open ,hit the expand button to read history on collection http://www.artfact.com/auction-lot/...ion-of-genuine-charl-1-c-bzmyglmbwzsite i found pic http://charlestonrelics.com/shop/in...fo&cPath=14&products_id=170large pic i hope http://charlestonrelics.com/shop/in...p?main_page=popup_image&pID=170congrats on banner

I don't think I would want them to add anything either. I have seen some repairs where they've straightened and filled in the holes and cracks. It looks good and makes it much more stable and can withstand handling which is important to me as all my artifacts wind up in the classroom.
First time on the banner. Didn't make it even when I found 2 US gold coins in the same hole. Oh well. I MADE IT NOW!!!

Daryl
I just seen your latest pics. I'd be happy with that! It ain't gonna be much better unless it comes back half modern. I guess one banner find is better than nothing. ...and when you find 2 gold coins, does it really matter?

I think you are right. I may just have it flattened and mount it between 2 pieces of plexiglass. Yeah, I'll take two US gold over a banner post. Daryl

Daryl My early owner ID'ed, mason ring was kind of the same deal. It's all there, but broken, and for a while I thought it would be better looking like a ring. But now I am very content as is, and being flat it's easier to display with my other finds. It is what it is and not like I'm going to wear it so who cares. Maybe some day I'll consider getting it fixed but no hurry.

Hi Gollum,
I thought somebody might recognize it. I always make it a habit to return items I find to their owner. No problem.
Just send me your address and a enough to cover the postage and handling (you know the cost associated with the finding of this small piece of rare copper in the middle of nowhere that's been in the ground for about 175 years or so and 1300 miles away from home). Let's see, that would be 5 detectors purchased, about 4000 hours of ground sweeping time, 1258 AA batteries, 9125 miles of travel, and 6 diet cokes. Ah, $14,000.00 should cover that. So the total Handling and Postage would be $14,000.34.
Hope you enjoy getting it back.

Absolutely awesome treasure you have found - and I do mean treasure. It is mangled and defaced somewhat, however, if what your source is telling you is the case here, it would seem to me that it would only add to the value of this historical artifact. (jmo) It is exciting to read about this type of find seeing that I am a total newbie to this fascinating hobby of metal detecting.

Congratulations Daryl on making the Banner I thought it was a cert for it I wouldn't do anything to it you have a part of your Countries History there, it should be left as it was found The Bronze age Gold Cup(ringle mere cup) was left exactally as it was found....crushed, the BM just had a replica made of how it looked, and displayed them both together. Don't no wether this is something for you to consider SS

It may very well be possible to track down where this badge originated in terms of who owned that property at that time and then dig further (no pun intended) and see who is listed on his property rolls as slaves at the time. THey kept a meticulous record of them believe it or not. Though it may be a darker time in our history it is no doubt still fascinating and this is, no doubt, the find of a lifetime.. It may take long hours of research but I fully believe you can match a soul or at least a family to this badge. Please keep us all informed!

So the total Handling and Postage would be $14,000.34. Thats quite a bargain. Postage stamps are .41 so you are saving a whopping .07! Seriously though... That is a sweet chunk of history you have there. I can only dream of finding one so I will detect vicariously through you.

How much of the tag is missing? Looks like part of the top is gone. Just a thought that it was bent up and thrown away? Either way congrats on the Banner find.

Yep. Common practice back them from what I understand. The top should say "Charleston." That is the ONLY place they were ever made. So the slave may have bent and torn off the top and then proceeded to deface the rest of the tag. They didn't like them - Duh - and many times would do this if they got the chance.

It appears you can read "No." and thus the number of the tag is defaced, probably intentionally. To me, that makes it even more interesting historically. "I am not a number!"

I know very little about slave tags but have a hard time believing a slave would deface his tag. They were slaves and I don't think they'd dare ruin anything, and especially that. Now if it was a "FREE" tag, then maybe there would be a case for it. But thinking a little more, probably not, that thing was their get out of jail card!

Slave tags were issued every year for the purpose of keeping track of work slaves did outside of a plantation... They were good for only 1 year... I would have to believe that after the Civil War, they may have been seen as a piece of bad memory and beat and destroyed Obviosly considering where they are found, they were thrown away... I dug 2 when I was stationed in Charleston SC in the Navy back in the early 90's sold them both and now don't have them... both were found downtown area of Charleston...
