What's up TNet.  Jeff (UmrGolf2000) and I got out to do our daily digging yesterday and today and we secured permission at a new site which ended up being a AWESOME untouched Civil War Campsite!!! headbang headbang  We dug some really amazing stuff and unbelievable quantities.....we're still pretty light-headed from the whole experience and this goes down as one of our best hunts this year!  We hope y'all enjoy them!!  Well enough talking....onto the photos!  We have a few videos too thumbsup

The button in the video ended up being the Massachusetts button Wink

Definitely one of the best collection of button finds I've seen posted on T-Net in my 2 yrs. here. Would like to see the back of the unknown relic. Actually looks like it could be a rosette. I think I have actually seen the cuff button depicted somewhere. Interesting. Congratulations.   "THE Hogge" headbang headbang headbang

Ok you guys. you've dug enough for one year. Leave something for the rest of us.  laughing7   All I can say is you all are on a roll and got into a great spot. On your 2 piece button, the Superior Quality mark on that one looks to be mid 1900's. During the centennial there were buttons and ribbons with a US & CS soldier shaking hands. I'm not 100% sure that's what the button is but I'm guessing it might be since the backmark seems to be of that time period. Can you make out what the writing on the front is?

Thanks for the input yank, post-war heh? That'd be the only relic that came out that was post-war.  Josh thinks its period or very shortly there-after and no we aren't able the make out the words other than the first one "the".. Huh

Man, let me tell you--If you two had called after each great find yesterday, it would've tied my phone up for hours.   Shocked  Now THAT's a hunt!!!  Box plate is killer--and actually that percussion cap tin lid is a great find.  I'm trying to think of where I've seen that in an original presentation box with a period sidearm before...must've been in an auction catalog.

I don't know what that mystery button is, but it is not a KY state seal.  I am wondering if it could be a military academy.  There are "Superior Quality" bm's from the CW era.  I would like to see a good quality, close-up photo of the button in better lighting.

Regards,

Buckleboy

Excellent!!! Looks like a very early camp to me Gentlemen. WTG, Quindy.

Thanks Quin.  Yes, this was a Rev. War, War of 1812, and a Civil War spot.  Actually, this area was used for the duration of the war, but there are early war relics and buttons mixed in

Incredible assortment of buttons WTG  icon_thumleft great silver find also that sure is a oldie Good hunt  thumbsup Dd60

Thanks DD!  We sure appreciate your support buddy icon_thumleft Wink

Thanks JerV3 icon_thumleft Wink

Ok you guys. you've dug enough for one year. Leave something for the rest of us.  laughing7   All I can say is you all are on a roll and got into a great spot. On your 2 piece button, the Superior Quality mark on that one looks to be mid 1900's. During the centennial there were buttons and ribbons with a US & CS soldier shaking hands. I'm not 100% sure that's what the button is but I'm guessing it might be since the backmark seems to be of that time period. Can you make out what the writing on the front is?
Tell you what Yank......We'll come up and dig some more of those plates....and you can come down here and dig some of these buttons Grin Grin Grin  How's that sound?

hello2 hello2

Great Buttons !!!!!!!!!!!!!   You killed it , what a score !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much KyFreeBird!  We DEFINITELY appreciate your banner vote my friend!!! Wink

Awesome finds.  Congrats on all the buttons.

Thanks Dman icon_thumleft Wink

Regards,

Buckleboy

Thanks Buck.  And no its definitely not a Kentucky BUT fresh out of the dirt it DID look like one but as soon as we got it home and I was able to more closely look at it, it became clear that it wasn't a Kentucky button.  Than I thought, "The only other button I know of that has two people shaking hands are the G.A.R. buttons"  But wasn't able to find and exact match....We'll crack it eventually....

Awesome, awesome discoveries.  I've been staring at that 'unknown' button as well, looking for clues.  Appears that the figure on the right has his right leg raised with his foot resting on an object (rock?).  At the bottom, is that 3 stars and a crescent?  If so, maybe it represents a fraternal organization of some kind.  Congrats on the finds and good luck IDing the button.  Cheers.

I am having trouble with scale here.....is this item a bullet or much larger than a bullet?  The reason I am asking, is that I found something that looks very similar.  The item I found is a lot bigger than a bullet and made of thin copper.  The item in your picture looks too large to be a bullet.  If your item isn't a bullet, what is it?

Hey BaldingBoy, what you're seeing is a flattened/smashed BIG BOY .69 Caliber Minie.  You can only imagine getting hit by one of those.....they're the reason that doctors across the country were amputating during the Civil War.  And as big as these were, there ARE just a FEW that have been found in the .72 caliber range but they are as RARE as hens teeth to find.

A .69 Caliber?  So that explains why it looks huge in the picture.  Yeah, I can only imagine seeing what a .72 caliber looks like.  That would be like getting hit by a rocket.

Well, you answered my question.  The item I found looks just like a flattened bullet, but is made out of copper or brass and is hollow inside.  It is considerably larger than even a .69 caliber.  I suspect it was a topper on a silver dollar sized round post or something.  The ridges around it give it the profile of a three ringer and it's old.  Kinda puzzling...but probably just something decorative.   icon_scratch

Thanks,
Baldingboy
