Well I managed to get out for 3 hours this morning. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and I was on the field where I found my avatar last year. Unfortunately only half the field had been plowed but you don't look a gift horse in the mouth Grin. The 2 halfpennies were right next to each other and the 2 Rose farthings were about 10 or so feet apart. About an hour into the hunt I found the Elizabeth 1st threepence  dated 1573 or 5, so I decided to really scour that part of the field. The next find was the crotal bell, still with ringer inside then I found a little brooch in the shape of a butterfly. I then moved closer to the houses and that's when the Xp gave a really strong signal and out popped a 1925 Gold sovereign from the Pretoria mint. It's not perfect but gold is gold thumbsup.

what is going on with gold ?

Gold coins are tough to find but just think how many American members on this forum are out there searching.  Also consider the fact that even a lurker would probably post a gold coin so that's a lot of holes being dug!  Then there's the others from overseas and the simple fact is there's just more gold in the ground.   I think Crusader alone has 4 or 5 and compare that with the handful of guys I know right around here and we're zero for about 100 years worth of digging.   To me it makes plenty of sense and even though it is inspiration seeing them posted, it's not something I think about much because my odds of something different and maybe even greater are actually better.

I really love the reverse design on that sovereign !  I cannot stop looking at it. I hope they put it on the BANNER showing this side of the coin !!     MaineRelic

The Sovereign was first created in the reign of Henry 7th 1485-1509 and was called a Sovereign because of the Sovereign being depicted on the obverse. On the reverse was the royal arms set in the centre of a Tudor rose. A few years later the " Angel" was restyled and St Michael, who is depicted about to thrust Satan into the pit with a cross-topped lance was on the reverse, this is the start of the depiction of St George. Now we have to move forward to George 3rd where the Sovereign appears with St George slaying the dragon, along with larger denominations, and at the same time the sovereign replaces the guinea. Although since this time St George has been used on other coins and Sovereigns have been issued without St George .

I know by your posts over the last few years it has taken you a long time to establish a list of great sites, but that still seems a little strange don't you think?  But then again there's a lot of things that happen in detecting that have no good explanation.  I have no problem waiting for 20 years to find a gold coin if there's 8 or 9 to follow.  Grin

Here are the pics

1. All the bits except the Sovereign
2. Lizzy Threepence obverse
3. Lizzy reverse
4. Sovereign obverse
5. Sovereign reverse

It's the luck of the draw. Next season the choice of crops may not be so helpful. At least the main farmer is starting to let us have more fields.

All of your finds are Great, the Gold coin is a Fantastic find, Congratulations to you.

In the early days of the UK, farmers would throw gold coins into their fields for good luck, hoping for a good crop.

For those who are fortunate enough to be able to detect farmers fields in the  UK, have a good chance of finding one
of those coins, along with Roman coins.  One of my buddies here in Ohio, who goes to the UK detecting found his first Gold Coin there last year.

Lets put this into context, so reader's don't think that UK fields are scattered with Gold Coins of all ages.
In the Iron Age (Celtic period) during large scale deforestation the UK began to settle & farm the land.  These tribes had no monetary system (this came later when the Romans invaded & wanted to tax us all for foreign Wars) so any Bronze/Silver or Gold Coins they produced were used in ritual activity, payment at Chiefian level for political means, or payment to Mercenaries.  The Mercenaries would take their gold over to Gaul (France) where they could spent it in Rome's Monetary system.
Therefore, 2000 years ago, there is a theory that single Gold Coins were placed in fields to either thank the Gods for a Good harvest or to ask for a good years harvest.  If true & it is a theory I like, but has no documentary evidence to back it up, then it was not continued in the Roman period.  The Medieval period saw some interesting practices with Silver coins, ie. folding them in half for some kind of ritual reason, but any other Gold Coin was lost or most likely dumped there in other rubbish/crap.

Your buddy was lucky to go to a rich area (probably Colchester) where his odds were higher than most of the UK.
