ADDED - 6-6-10 Put up pics of the other better coins from the second hunt at this yard.  Thought they all belonged with this post.  Thanks for the Banner T-Net.  Only took 2 1/2 years of hard digging to find something worthy.

ADDED- 6-1-10- Took coin this morning to a very reputable coin shop, and the owner told me it was the BEST condition dug coin he has seen in 20 years running his shop.  He said no hesitation to call it high AU, but that the grading company would still call it "corroded" from being in the ground.  I asked him if he would have known it was dug w/o me telling him, and he said yes, but I sorta wonder how he would know?  He said something about pitting that I honestly couldn't see under his loop.  Guess I have a bunch to learn about grading coins.

ADDED- I forgot that even took a few pics with my camera phone when I found the coin.  They are a bit blurry(hands were probably shaking), but you can see the same Eagle that I saw.  The front was completely covered in mud.

I stopped by a somewhat old looking place near my work, b/c I saw a guy working on his motorcycle.  I asked him if I could detect the yard.  He said "thats weird, you are like the 3rd person to ask me that".  I was a bit perplexed b/c it didn't look like that great of a spot, so I asked him how old it was.  He proceeded to tell me that it was built in 1812, and was the original house for the family that the road is named after.  Now I am really interested.  He said the last guy a few years ago didn't find much, but I could try.  This happened a week ago.
Fast forward to today.   I had an hour, and thought I would try it out.  I didn't expect much, and found a few memorial pennies right off.  I was happy to see they were down in the ground 3-4" and from the 70's.  This gave me hope.  Then I popped a Merc, and started to get a little excited.  The next good signal was a no doubt about it silver quarter signal about 6".  I wanted a video camera at this point, b/c I rarely hit signals this clean.  Sure enough, I see the edge of a silver quarter encased in mud.  I couldn't tell what it was, but was pretty sure it wasn't a Washington(It turned out to be a pretty nice 1901, and would have been a very nice find for any other day).  I took both silver coins to my car, and put them in water.  About this time, I noticed that the back yard looked pretty good also.  I went over there, and got another silver quarter signal fairly close to where a water line had recently been put in.  This one was about 7", and when I saw the shine, and pulled it out, I had an Eagle with Rays staring at me.  I instantly knew what it was, and was pretty sure the date was 1853.  I called Lostlake and told him I finally hit a Seated Quarter as I was putting the hole back in.  When I dumped the dirt back into the hole, I noticed a marble that could have been associated with the coin.  After talking with Lostlake for a minute I put my earphones back on and got another silver quarter hit right next to the last one.  I hate to say it, but I was disapointed to see a large cent.  Either way, it is safe to assume the two coins were part of an 1853 pocket spill.  I can't see any possible way the quarter was in circulation longer than the year it was made.  I am absolutely floored by the condition.  In fact, I have never dug any silver coin of any denomination in this condition, and I saved it for my first Seated.
What a Great Hobby!!!!!!!!!!!
I am not a coin grader, but I almost can't see any way this quarter wouldn't grade around AU or better?  I am interested to hear others opinions.
Regards,
Jon Dickinson

That Quarter is without a doubt at least XF.  The only reason I say that is because I also just dug my first (an 1876) on Easter Sunday, and it is in very close condition to yours.  Mine also had full Liberty etc.  I took it to my coin dealer & he graded it XF easy. Some may say it is AU.   They just dont come out of the ground like that very often from what I see at my club, & on the forum,  I think we are 2 lucky hunters.  Congrats on an outstanding coin.

I wouldn't hesitate to call it AU. The grade AU still means that there is some wear though. You can see evidence of this on the highest parts of your coin...in general I've found that ya gotta be careful not to let the luster influence the way you grade. The net grade is determined by wear only...once you get into MS grades (with NO wear), then you have to start worrying about scratches, dings, etc before you can grade it.
That's sure one killer coin. Can't wait to hopefully find a seated quarter someday looking half as nice as that lol.  Cool Congrats!

no, I am not a crazy night owl. Driving to South Bend, IN for a 8 am appointment.  Decided to pass some time, and checked my post. All the great replies really woke me up, and are helping a safe midnight run.
Some comments from me:
Yes, the hunt was short. I figure to have 1/3 of the front yard and 2/3 of the back yard still to detect. I just couldn't concentrate after seeing that eagle on the back of the quarter. Hopefully, something else cool will show itself.
I am jealous of myself. LOL.
I will take coin to local shop, and see what they say about condition. I will report results. I looked it over with a 10x loop, and there is maybe a very, very, very small amount of wear on the knees of Lady Liberty. I can't find any on the back.
Thanks for the banner consideration. If I make it, my wife may get off my back about wasting time in the dirt.

You have some great pics of that coin! I don't see any hairline scratches at all. All the lines in the stars are there also. I found one 2 years ago that graded EF-45. I thought it would make AU. Yours is DEFINITELY in better shape than mine. I think it would grade AU. Mine went to ANACS. I don't say this often....but I would send this one out. CONGRATULATIONS on a $300+ COIN!!!!! I often get chastised for "under" grading peoples coin finds on this site. People don't understand how much 1 tiny, hairline, scratch can de-value a coin. But this coin has the stuff!!!  AWESOME! Capt. SE- Felt I needed to reply to your comment about scratching coins.  It is true that I have scratched quite a few better coins removing them from the hole.  For example, a nice condition 1897O Barber Dime(ouch).  However, I read something on here about using the Sun Ray probe in pinpoint mode, and I really haven't scratched the better ones since.  I have heard a few people on this forum snicker about using the probe in pinpoint, but I think it is a great use of the pinpointer.  If I am in the woods or in a field, I don't bother, but in someones front yard, I cut micro-sized holes, and try to be extremely accurate digging.  I have also found that using the pinpoint helps in recovery time also.  I read one of your posts that you were having some health problems.  I sincerely hope to here of a full recovery in the near future.

Yeah, Jon.  Haven't been able to detect since last July.   BangHead  But I'm slowly improving.  Thanks for the well wishes.

I always used the X1 in pinpoint...it really helps to lessen the probability of scratching a good coin!!  Good move!!

I think this coin is spectacular enough to deserve the Banner.

I also think you're erring on the side of 'conservative' in thinking this coin was in circ for a year.
I don't think it changed hands more than 20 times (don't ask me how I arrive at that #).

FANTASTIC!!
Every time I come back here, I mentally berate myself for the interval.  I'm sure glad I got to see *this* one!

Hope you find more great stuff.  If this brief hunt is any indicator, Oh My...
Congratulations!

Fantastic find Jon, Congratulations on one of the finest dug Seated Quarters I have ever seen.

I Vote Banner for this one!!

HH, Ringfinder

P.S.
I would go back to this site and grid it out and really go slow and search it over and over, dig the chirps and deep
signals, all of them.  You kind of wonder what was at this site so many years ago?  A coin like you found would
almost be a days wages for some people back then.

Gonehunting,
I don't post finds on here to gain bragging rights. I post to pay back the board with a few pictures for all the pictures I get to look at.  Getting on the banner is no consideration, but I did ask Jeff if I did something wrong on my post to eliminate the find from consideration. He told me that the post didn't recieve banner reports. From my understanding, people who read the posts have to report the find to make the banner.  Either way, the coin and hunt made my banner, and I will not soon forget it. Thanks for your message and support. Jon Dickinson

That is one beautiful find! I agree with the numismatic grading of the previous posters....quite likely AU.....I disagree with your coin dealer...that coin is not pitted...it is just mildly granular on the obverse side. If you get that slabbed...your most conservative scenario might be graded....AU detail...mildly granular obverse..overall grade of XF+. That would be the absolute strictest grading. I am a very conservative "Sheldon" grader and numismatist for the last 45 years. The fact that it was in the ground would likely not even be brought up. That is truly a "type" collectors dream coin for that denomination and period.....the fields of the obverse and reverse are really nice and the overall appearance is very appealing!
That is one major nice find.... icon_thumleft

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.
