Was looking for colonial stuff but not arguing with this baby at all (most valuable find to date).  Didn't even know this was a key date until after I got home.  Glad I didn't clean it there--though I really wanted to see the date--i could see it had a date and was in good shape.  Might only be my 2nd SLQ--I forget and would have to pull my silver from the safety deposit box to find out.  Ran it under running water after I got home.  Sorry the pics aren't better but it's with a flash.  Will try to get better pics tomorrow in daylight.

Thanks.

BTW, any folks who want to take a shot at the grading, please do so!  I'm seeing a discrepancy from my books and the service-graded coins on eBay.

Don't always trust ebay coins even if they are "service-graded ", cause I have seen on auctions sites that sell the actual coin sealers empty so you can self grade an make it look like it was graded by a pro service... Btw according to the tips in the 2010 redbook the grade would probly be Extra Fine

What a beautiful coin !!!    I would venture a grade of - better than VF-20 and a touch under XF.
which per 2009 redbook has your retail value at $450. - to $600.  Great find !    Argentium.

In James F. Ruddy's Photograde, there are separate criteria for grading different dates of SLQ's. Written criteria for EF-40  are:
"Obverse: Liberty's right knee and the tip of breast will show slight wear.
Reverse: All the feathers will show but will be worn on the high spots."

Details of head, shield, and primary feathers of eagle's left wing reverse suggest this might grade EF-45 or higher. At this level of quality, probably best to have PCGS grade and authenticate it in order to get maximum resale value. ANACS would be my second grading choice.

Congratulations, my friend!  hello2

I too, was lucky enough to find a 1921, deep in a forest, in the middle of nowhere!  It wasn't in the condition yours is in, but it had a readable date!  You can see it in the picture under my username.

A great find...and once again, congrats!

Wonderful find! Check out this pictorial grading site:

http://coinauctionshelp.com/how_to_...rade_standing_liberty_quarters.html

It looks to me to be about a EF-45 from their pictures. The breast plate mesh can be seen on your coin and all the detail in your shield. That starts with the EF on this web site.

Heck...any Standing Liberty Quarter with a date on it should be a banner!  But when they are as nice as this one and as significant as well, banner is just formality.  Pretty, EF coin. Don't know if you'd want it slabbed or not.  Not a bad day's labor, although if it were me it would only get out of my possession when the last clod of dirt was thrown on me.

Congrats...you have one great find.

I love hunting old relic sites . . . as I feel
the imprint of past lives often linger there.

I view relic sites as windows to the past, sacred places
in a way, yet at the same time attesting to the reality
that the past is still very much a part of our today!

Thank you, folks, for the comments and the banner votes!  (I'm quite happy to be able to search the archives now.  Cheesy  )

I'll likely keep it, as I do all my finds so far, intending to leave them for my kids, but being out of work this may end up going at some point.  We'll see on that part.  As for getting it slabbed, I would actually like to in this case but I've seen or heard of so many coins getting marked "cleaned" even when they were also only run under tap water that I'm a bit leery of doing so.  Under a 10x loupe I can't see any hairline scratches but who knows how those folks decide to mark things "cleaned".  I suppose I could take it to a coin dealer and ask but the only one I'm familiar with I'm not sure I'd trust their opinion.  Guess I should probably pull it out of the SD box--where it will be residing--and see what some dealers think at the next Bay State Coin Show.  Any other thoughts in that direction regarding getting it slabbed?

Thanks again!

If you have any intentions of selling, definately slab it.  You will get a much higher premium.  Running water over it wont hurt it.  And if it does returned cleaned, you can just crack it out and send it off to another one.  I would send it to PCGS first then ANACS if it comes back damaged.  Any way you look at it, you are going to get a nice price for that one if you put it up for sale.

Why pay for an "opinion" you just got 20 or so for free, and they are all in the same range of XF. People who buy coins of that caliber don't need a third party opinion. That's just my opinion. I don't buy holders, I buy coins.

Cheaper than getting it slabbed is first taking it to several dealers to get their opinion of grade. I'd do that first. Write down the names of the dealers and what they grade it as. You can always quote them on Ebay.

I can understand your situation.  Unless you really think you're going to sell it, then no need to have it slabbed...why spend good money?  You could sell it on eBay and get your money, and probably net more than if you slabbed it first.  Honestly, if you could avoid selling it altogether, then I would avoid it.

Good luck on what ever decision you make!

I too, was lucky enough to find a 1921, deep in a forest, in the middle of nowhere!  It wasn't in the condition yours is in, but it had a readable date!  You can see it in the picture under my username.

While using my newfound search ability, ran into your old post and then noticed you're from MA as well.  Still learning the search options but  haven't run into any other found '21 SLQs yet.  Cool that both were found in MA!  (Give me a buzz if you ever want to hit any sites--I'm not too far away.)

How come the U's look like V's?  Huh

For some reason, the U.S. went thru a period of Roman influence. At least in coinage. (With buildings it was mostly Greek.)

The Roman U was printed like our V. You can find this on a lot of the silver dollars.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on this. It's been years. laughing9

I like your Quarter ,but the date is is bad. The date should be raised not flat, other than that it would be graded at AU-50.Take it to a good coin dealer, have him look at the date.

SLQ's are known, not only for their beautiful design, but also for how easy they are to wear down FAST due to it's high relief. This is a great find and is definitely AU at the highest;  just a step down from uncirculated.  You should look at the detail still in the shield.  The fine line work there is usually the first thing to wear off.

The coin has solidly XF details, pushing AU.  Those grading it VF or lower are likely undervaluing your find because they are looking at the flatness of Ms. Liberty's head and the weakness of the date.  However, many if not most SLQ's were minted with flat head detail and a weak date, so the sharpness of the head/date cannot be used for grading purposes!  If the coin did not suffer environmental damage from its time in the ground, I cannot imagine it would grade lower than XF at a 3rd party grading service.  Great find!

Nice this was a early stike.  The head is nice almost full however the drape on the right leg is weak.  Sometime on key coins Grading services will give you a good grade higher than a common date.  The bottom of the numbers are weak but that is very common for SLQ's.  However I would grade it a very stong XF.

Great find!  Just remember, even if it does grade high you may or may not get what YOU think it's worth.  It all depends on whether you can find someone who is really willing to spend the money to get it.  Personally I'd keep it.  Btw, I think it grades at about EF-40...really nice detail on the obverse but not as much on the reverse.  Probably AU-50 on front and VF-25/30 on the back.  I still vote BANNER!
