Hello all,

Still in the Netherlands for the summer.  Trip half way over today.  Then it's back to the US for RW and CW stuff around Charleston, SC.

Most of the time, I put in all the time and effort to do good research and I turn left when I should have turned right.  I choose the field NEXT to the one I should have.  I wind up too late and hear about what somebody found.  BUT NOT THIS TIME.

I knew the ground was old and thought it was a place where people had conducted some activity for quite a long time.  I knew there were interesting things to find but I NEVER expected this.

Yesterday, I decided to take off the WOT coil and use the regular coil in a somewhat trashy spot.  Lots of iron blanked signals and a lot of rust signals that I would have to dig.  A lot of rusted iron had already come out of the place.  Those signals that sound good but as you dig, they turn bad.

I was searching through the area and hearing the iron blanking and then got a signal that was good but strange. Not very strong for the depth estimate.  Sort of the "Beep, Beep" you get with some buckles or odd shaped things but different.  The signal had no "open" sound like you get when there is a hole in the object.  Just a weird sound.  It was a good signal swinging at 90 degrees but it would sort of "Beep/Beep" one way and "Beep" the other.  Hard to describe - especially with the sounds an e-Trac makes.  It was more or less indicative of trash but not really.  I played around in the area a bit and came back to it.  The signal was one I sometimes walk away from but the numbers on the e-Trac never changed.  I had traveled this far and was standing over it.  Hard ground or not, I had to dig it.

I took the grass plug out and set it aside.  Thing still in the hole.  More digging.  Still in the hole.  The ground was dry but got a little more moist as I hit about 8" as there is a water table in these fields.  Right before I hit the mud, the dirt hitting the small pile disintegrated and left this on the top of the pile.  I picked it up, dropped all my stuff - headphones, detector, shovel, pin pointer, hat, lunch, and walked all the way across the field to my pack where I had a camera.  This was something that I had to have a picture of.

This was the "Beep, Beep".  The one place in all the fields shown on the maps and in these pictures where there were two coins sort of stuck together.  True heart attack time.

Gotta love the old ground.

Sometimes it not all bad being a blind pig.

Daryl

The laws in the Netherlands are different from the UK.  If I had found these in the UK, I would own half and the farmer would own half.  Here, it is up to the farmer how he wants to handle it.  A friend I hunt with has found a gold coin on land owned by this farmer.  He took it to the farmer and he looked at it and said it was a nice find and handed it back.  He is not really interested in keeping anything and he owns so much land the money means nothing to him.  He owns several square kilometers of lnd on this farm and has two other farms that are bigger.  Money isn't a problem or issue for him.  That's good news for me.  I will show them to him but I don't expect anything but a "congrats, those are nice" from him.

I look at them and just imagine the story they could tell.  And yes, I almost need another pair of pants.

Whats different about it, other than we would have to hand it in?  Its not a Law that its split with the landowner, only that you have a prior agreement.  The agreement can be the finder keeps 100%.

So are you saying, the Law allows you to keep them?

Bioprof,

That is a JAW-DROPPING find!  Finding two like that, I would urge you to hunt that field hard in the area you found those.  One gold coin can be an isolated drop, but two in a hole is a STRONG sign that there may be a cache nearby.  The cache itself may be deep in the field, so you may have to take some dirt off the top to even hear it!

What more can I say...I'm speechless.

Thank you for writing such a great account of the finding of these coins.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

I'm not that good with Dutch stuff but these are Dutch Gold Ducats.  They were minted from the 13th century until the 16th century as hammered gold coins.  As with other precious metal coins, the value was in the gold and the dies were made in the various provinces and there will be a difference sometimes.  The coin with the date on the back was minted in the province of West Friesland.  Same place as the copper coin I posted earlier.  The other is a trade Ducat and may have been minted for export to one of the many trading colonies the Dutch dealt with or owned - like Ceylon.

As far as being different in the UK, all finds under the Treasure act are split 50/50 with the landowner unless you have a written agreement that states otherwise.  I guess for most people who are just out asking permission to hunt a place are in the position of having to split everything 50/50 as they most likely have no agreement.  Here in the Netherlands, there is no reporting law and so any find can just be taken and kept.  I never do that as I always show what I find to the farmer.  In my opinion it is the landowners and unless I show it to them and they don't tell me they want it, it's mine to keep.

I am also pretty certain there are more coins there.  A friend was hunting the same farm about 1000 yards from this site and found a hoard of 60 silver coins from the 1600's.  So it seems there was quite a bit of "money" passing through the area and the way to "put it in the bank" was to bury it.  You can believe I'm going back.  Dig every signal?  You bet.

It's all still like a dream.

Interesting (don't forget a verbal contract is binding in UK Law, just helps if you have a witness as well, thats why Dad & I make agreements together with the farmer).  Its very bad practice not to discuss the outcome of any potential treasure prior to hunting, anyone caught out deserves to lose it all in my books.  We now mostly operate (but not exclusively) on a signed agreement before we even set foot on the land.

Anyway, sounds like a win/win Law over there!

2 Gold Coins in a day will be a hard act to follow headbang

Yeah, it's different here.  Guess it has to be since metal detecting is technically illegal here.  So if the landowner wanted, he could have you arrested and take all your stuff if they wanted - at any time and for no reason other than you are detecting.  So it wouldn't be a trespass arrest it would be illegal metal detecting arrest.  Go figure.

In the UK, I know how much of a hassle it is to export anything so I always give it all to the farmer to keep or do whatever they want with it.  The only exception is when I hunt with the Colchester Hunting Club in Essex.  All the export stuff is done for me so I keep that.  I guess if I ever find anything somewhere else in the UK that is worth anything, I will have to "have a talk" with the farmer and figure out things.  I just hunted one UK farm a few weeks ago and the farmer had given a person permission to hunt.  That person found a gold Roman Stater - one of 12 that have been found on the farms along the small road by the bay.  Since there was no prior split agreement, they agreed to the 50/50 split that is normal.  The farmer is now in a bit of a pinch.  The guy wanted to keep the coin and the farmer was holding it until he got the 50% of the value placed on it by the museum.  The guy sent him the money for the coin and then committed suicide.  So the farmer still has the Stater but doesn't know who it really belongs to.  Oh well.

Oh well.

Sad story, guess it highlights the importance of a sound understanding.  But your right 50/50 is the default as only a few would agree to give up all there claim (specially as they know some might be into the millions)

Not being picky.  I just go by what the farmer says.  So what are the big Roman gold coins?  I think this one was 83 B.C.

I'll put my two cents in (found them in a tot lot)

Outstanding!
Make it a double!  I agree with some of the others there may be more where those came from.  If not move to another spot while your still hot.  If you ever get back around Savannah let me know and I'll come up there and hunt around with you if you'd like some company.  I suppose you'll be getting plenty of offers from others as well.  Nicely done and what a story to tell.  How much more time do you have over there to hunt around?  I hope the field owner isn't interested in them at all.  Great work on the research and line of thinking.  Now when they talk about golden oldies they won't be talking about us older guys.  What did the others think when you showed the goods to them?  I bet they all bolted for the door and fields~!  Beautiful old gold coins.  I can't wait to see what else you uncover over there.  The earlier posts and finds were enough let alone those nice coins.  WAY TO GO!
And you switched over the the other coil, was that a stock coil?  We're all happy for you.  Is this the best of all your previous hunts overseas?  I can just imagine you walking around those fields now with a detector in each hand LOL.  It seems like in metal detecting you always find a bit more once you go back to a nice place you've "cleaned out."  Once you've finished with that area give it a break but I'd sure go back one more time before you come back home here.
Coin value Huh  Excitement of a good hunt ....priceless.  Uh, I think you better start packing an extra pair of pants and underwear.  .... You might need them.  I'll be on the next plane over there .... Now exactly where the heck are you over there?   LOL....  I see you've made the banner with that nice couple.  I'm very happy for you.  WHAT A VACATION or visit your having there.  Your not missing anything in the Savannah/Jacksonville area except some rain and a whole lot of hot sun.  Thanks for sharing the thrill with us.

When I looked at your profile and saw MN as your location, I was wondering if it was a hoax.  We have many early Dutch maps of NJ, but I was not aware of any so far west.  Then I googled Haarsche Wetering, and I understood!

Congrats on your amazing finds!

I think there is more as well.  As I say when I am in an area that hasn't been hunted much, you have to kiss a lot of frogs.  Meaning you have to dig a lot of crap out before you get the good stuff.  I know in some fields here, people will find them and wait a year or so and let people dig out all the lead and rusted iron before they go in to look for the nice coins.  This place is like that but I'm going to do my best to kiss all the frogs and find some more nice coins.  They have to be there.  With the silver coin hoard found last year half a km away, it just makes sense that there would be more.

Yeah, I switched to the stock coil.  I have a 5" coil but in a field that size, it was just too small.  I like the way the stock coil works and I understand the signals a bit better than the 5" SEF coil.

I haven't shown the coins to the guy I hunt with sometimes.  Trying to pick the right time and way.  Gotta get some mileage out of it if I can.

I am surprised at the amount of stuff that is in the ground.  I have a few places I hit every few days just because they have produced some really nice stuff in the past.  I know it has been pounded but I still find coins from the 1600's, buckles, musket balls, thimbles every time I go.  I guess with the fields being so big, it is deceptive and you think it has been hunted pretty well 100% but in reality it has not.  It's just weird.

I'm here until the end of September and this is all pasture - some grazed and some hayed - so I can hunt it pretty much every day if I want.  So I think I will have fun there.  Not sure if I'll have this much fun again though.

I spend the summers in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and am hunting around Amersfoort, Utrecht, and Baarn.  Take a look on a Google Map.  It southeast of Amsterdam.  About a 30 minute train ride and the bus takes me right to the fields.

I'll be back in the Savannah area this November.  We spend the winters there.   We stayed on Tybee for a couple of years, Hilton Head one year, and this year we will be on Edisto Island.  Come up anytime.  I have some places but most of the time I go out with a guy that has located RW, 1812 War, and CW camps and charges a bit to take you there - http://www.addams-artifacts.com/Site/Addams_Artifacts.html - I've got a few good finds on his site.

So we will see how it goes.  Not sure if I am so spoiled now that I'll be ticked it's just a silver coin.   Cheesy

Email me in November.  I'll be ready to go.

Googling Haarsche Wetering are we???  Notice I didn't let much info show in the map.  Can't be giving away my place now can I???

This is an awesome hobby.  We are all addicted to the sweet "Beep, Beep, Beep" of a really good target and you NEVER know what the shovel will reveal.

I'm just glad I didn't sign the suckers like I do about half my targets when digging grass and trying to keep my holes small.  Now THAT would have made me just sit there and cry.  Can you imagine centering the coins with your shovel, losing the target, and then seeing them wrapped around the shovel's point.  It happens and it seems to happen to me a lot.

Thanks for the posts.  Now I wonder how I can top it?Huh

Sorry about that.  I have been posting about this site and some of the finds for a couple of weeks.  So maybe I forgot to say again where I was hunting.

I spend the summers in the Netherlands.  In the summer, most of the land that people hunt is in crop.  I decided to take a different tactic.

There is a website that allows you to overlay old maps on current places.  You can tell what the area was like from the 17th century onwards most of the time.  I used these maps to find places that were unchanged since the 17th century.  They were pasture then and they are pasture now.  Some of the "strips" are grazed and some are hayed.  Either way, there is huntable old ground all summer.

So I did all the research to find farms that had this type pasture and got permission to hunt it.  Most of this old ground is around Amersfoort and Utrecht.  So I have concentrated my efforts there.  It is only 30 minutes by train and I can get to most places by bus really easy.

So I am in the Netherlands and digging Netherlands dirt.

Yeah, but that old Dutch mud is pretty much new Dutch concrete right now.  We need rain and we need it bad.  The only good thing about no rain is that when they hay one of the fields I'm hunting, it doesn't grow back in a week.

Come on over and give me a call.  There have to be Dutch relatives to visit.

Ok here goes.

First - Learn Dutch  Grin

No not really.  It is different over here.  I have access to ways to find things we can only dream about in the US.  The Dutch have been drawing maps for a long time.  And they have made them available on the internet so you can find out where things used to be.  The site is even called "watwaswaar.nl"  and you can see modern day maps and old maps that are of the same place.

So here goes a REAL example.  I can use it because I'm the only one with permission to search there and the guy that lives in the big house right next to the field WILL call the police on you.  So I feel that this site is OK to show.

Here are a series of maps that show how it works.

After you know the place you want more information about, go to watwaswaar.nl and find the place Photo 1.  The map shows a softball field so it is easy to see where I am talking about - Photo 2.  You can then see it from Google Map as well - Photo 3.

Then you can put your cursor on the watwaswaar map and click to get an old map.  This one is from the 1700's - Photo 4.  You then can match the path of the canal - they don't change much and find the place you are looking for.  The place I am searching is the little circle under the word "Sloot."

If you notice - Photo 5 - the house that is there now is on the right side of the little piece of canal that goes north.  This other place is on the left.  So it was there in the 1700's but gone now.  That's where you want to search.  You can tell where it was by the iron crap in the ground and all the pottery the plow brings up.

That's how it's done.

And it WORKS!

Daryl

Hey Daryl, great research and coins.  They are also in great condition.  I guess it shook you up seeing them for the first time for many many years.  You are finally making out ok, and that is also great!  Best of luck.

Congrats on the find. Will you have any problem bringing them back into the States? Through customs, etc. ?

The laws in NL are different than England or some other european lands.  There is nothing to keep you from taking a couple of coins out of the country.  I can't imagine that the USA has any problem either if someone brings two gold coins into the country, maybe 10,000 would cause some fuss though.  Some lands in Europe forbid everything but not NL.  I could also not see how customs can see that you have two gold coins in your wallet......

You bet.  And where did you get yours.  Living in New Hampshire I would think that would be REALLY tough.

Greetings,
I Have been searching the mudflats around Portsmouth NH,
as posted, dug my wide circle around penny hit, & ducat on the side of hole.
(with a nice ding in the edge from my shovel)
Asking in Historic societies, and libraries.
Also,  Driving the coastal rivers, you can spot the remains of boatyards.
Have been pulling a large number of asst relics from these areas.
It's my belief that the coin I found was on it's way to Ceylon, when the ship stopped to provision in Portsmouth, a pilfered coin was lost, but only for a couple hundred years,           Best Wishes, & Happy Hunting.    Herbie.

Id rather be there ^ than here
