This one was a BIG surprise.  Josh and I were after the 4th H.M.A. today and I got the button signal....  I dig the plug and for some reason, this thing pinpointed WAY off.  It was a good 4 inches or more to the left of where it seemed Huh .  To clean it, I used 4 or 5 wetted cotton swabs and gently rubbed them over the surface to remove most of the dirt.  Then I thinly layered my finger with mineral oil and brushed it over the surface, highlighting the highest points.  I intentionally left some of the dirt to help bring out the detail.

UPDATE- The Button is the 1B listed in Bramblefind's reply (#7) below.. the only example I could find of the 1B online is listed in the link, item # cs112, over halfway down the page.. it's pretty beat up, but the same variant. icon_thumleft

Yep, it was nice to see that Early Virginia Militia button pop out today.  Sure beats the EIGHT Eagle "A's" that I dug today YES EIGHT!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked   I had a good time and the rain definitely helped pop the signals....we'll get back to it tomorrow headbang headbang icon_thumleft Wink

P.S.  It's a guess, but I think Horstmann may have made this button as they were in Philadelphia in their first stage from  1820-1850.

Ho-Hum just another great digging day in VA. Great early button Jeff and congrats Josh on the "A" buttons. I have never dug anything but Eagle GS buttons and one Eagle Dragoon button. These early war sites suck compared to VA sites. You guys have a great site-hunt it out. Stay cool, Quindy.

I agree with civil1, you guys are going to have to have your own banner! laughing9  Amazing find Jeff and your 8 Artilleries isn't to shabby either Josh.  WTG guys, you are tearing em' up.

The RV50 means "Relative Value" of the button.  This was an estimated value that Albert put on the buttons in his book back in 1976.  This was based on a button being in fine condition and the scarcity of the button.  So with it being almost 35 yrs. since that book has been put out I would say that your excellent button there would have a relative value of a lot more.  He does state that badly worn, damaged, or excavated specimens have less value, but we know that a scarce button like this would have high dollar written all over it in almost any condition!  BTW, this info. is in Albert's book on page 8.

Again great finds guys!

Very nice find.  thumbsup

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.

Congratulations once again on an incredible find Jeff and on getting the banner AGAIN! The finds just keep getting better and better for you don't they. What are you going to find next General Washington's gold teeth! laughing9 Oh, sorry they were made of wood, I forgot laughing7 If it was me man. . . I'd sell . . . I only keep what have too, otherwise it starts to pile up.

I love hunting old relic sites . . . as I feel
the imprint of past lives often linger there.

I view relic sites as windows to the past, sacred places
in a way, yet at the same time attesting to the reality
that the past is still very much a part of our today!

I would like to personally congratulate a group of local hunters for figuring out where our site is/was icon_thumleft  Next time you send out "your people" to do your dirty work, try not to make it so obvious.  Josh and I have NEVER asked anyone to accompany them to sites where they're finding nice things.  It's etiquette.  After failed attempts by this group, they've done their homework and located the spot notworthy  Good luck and try not to get too frustrated when you're out there and can't get a signal. Great button!! Is that button larger than most CW buttons? I was at the Museum of the Confederacy last week in Richmond drooling over all their stuff, when I noticed that some of the VA uniforms contained some huge buttons, but they appeared to be of a two pieced construction, not a cast one, like yours.

Sorry to hear that some one is skunk-dogging your site!! That is the worst of the worst! Hopefully Karma will drop a big dump on them. Or someone will kick their ass!! Either one would suffice, but both would be even better.

Continued success and congrats on another Banner! BTW..if you can get to Richmond...check out the Museum of the Confederacy. It will rock your world!!

Ok, this is the last time I'll respond to this thread people laughing9  I just wanted to come back and apologize to a couple individuals who felt like I implied they had something to do with the thieving.  Nevertheless, the site will be crawling with other folks soon.  Like I said in the last reply, have at it.

Lastly, I wanted to share a piece of this great site with anyone who would like to have it..  I'll attach pics, but its an Eagle "A" cuff still in the dirt clod.  Roughly 1850, give or take 10 years.  If you are the first to pm and tell me that you'd like to have it, with your address, it's yours.  Please no avid CW hunters.  Let's get it to someone who doesn't have one.  Thanks again to all who replied and voted banner.. It's appreciated icon_thumleft

Button's been claimed.. Early bird gets the worm laughing7 (if you'd really like to have one of the other Eagle A's from the site, pm me and I'll send out a couple more)

The place gave up 40-50 pre-cw Eagle "A" buttons, 3 early army buttons, 5 early navy buttons, 3 Hampton military academy buttons, the VA button from this post, 2 seated coins, a KGII farthing, suspender buckles, thimbles, etc. etc. etc.

 hello

Right for starters it's very difficult for us UK boys to comment on these RARE buttons, because quite frankly we no sod all about them...and it's easy just to say great find Undecided I don't like doing that. BUT when you get great hunters like BuckleBoy, Sentinel and Kirk, and RPg to name but a few, telling you this a Banner find....you know this is a no brainer BANNER find.

As for the condition of the find, it speaks for it self, in Britain it;s rare to find any button that looks as good, never mind a rare one Shocked

Congrats on making the Banner, hope I can learn more about the find icon_thumleft
