I was walking through my father in laws plowed field yesterday when I noticed something laying just on the outside of one of the rows and picked it up and took it in to show Dave and he thinks its an Indian spear weight or some ceremonial piece. What do you all think it could be, its about 6 inches long and is made out of some type of rock with circles in it. Better pictures will follow when my sister in law brings my camera back.

Wow! Looks like you have a pick bannerstone. I have only ever found pieces Believed to be weights used for the atlatl but there is an ongoing controversy about their original use. Sounds like it might be banded slate since you mentioned circles in the stone. Not an expert just an occasional artifact hunter for 15yrs. It would pay to get it checked out, they can bring several hundred. Nice Find.

Is this item stone or iron?
The Banner Stones I know of are stone and date from 500 to 1800 AD. They range from 4 to 8 inches. Anyway, most believe they were ceremonial pieces.

Bannerstone and a nice delicate shaped on at that. Probably took a long time to make and when it was lost the maker uttered several Native American swear words. Killer find and probably worth quite a bit. Let me put it in terms a coin hunter would understand. That is the same to an Indian relic hunter as finding a gold coin is to a coin hunter. Very rare and a "heart racing, yelling, happy dance" sort of find that not many make.

Hey Allen, congratulations on your find and the banner. Shelbyville or Bagdad, you don't have to tell me. I know a lady in bagdad that found a killer pipe in one of her fields. It's about 8" long and shaped like a bird. It's perfect except one of the ears is broke off.

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.

Nice work spotting the artifact in the field . Great find , one of the nicest stones out there . An important archaic site containing numerous graves containing banner stones is at Indian Knoll, Kentucky. At this site, “few of the banner stones show signs of use. They are carved of exotic imported stones with an exceptional artistry that exploits the natural colors, patterns, and striations of the stones to afford maximum visual satisfaction” . This shows both the importance of long distance trade in connecting various archaic societies as well as the importance they placed on the visual appeal of the pieces. This visual appeal would be created in part to please the spirits that the individuals were attempting to persuade for assistance and protection in the hunt, society, and the world as a whole. Your discovery has that , visual appeal ! Congrats Allen

Allen, this find could not have happened to a better forum member. You always offer great words of encouragement and that is why the Indian gods rewarded you with an artifact that will get you one step closer to paying off your house. Congrats again, Allen, and enjoy your time on the Banner! You are a good guy. Your wife is one lucky person. Kirk

Good thing you are not in my Home state... You cant keep any Indian relics you find there, well, and talk about them... Dumbest law I have ever heard of.. I used to find arrowheads all the time, grinding stones, mace heads. etc...

Allen great find and congrats on the banner...well deserved.
I have to admit it took around three posts calling it a Bannerstone before I realized that is its actual name and they were not saying it is a stone that deserves to be on the banner...lol. I think I'm working too much...need a vacation.

Congratulations, Allen, you lucky rascal!! Great find. Interesting how many folks went right straight to the monetary value, but I hope it inspires you to take a little time to research its use and the history of the people who made it. A 'banner' stone.

Not a big fan of Wiki but they did well on this link giving a spiritual as well as functional purpose of the stone. I am not sure people realise the value of ancient artifacts. Nothing like an old fashion eye ball find. Allen made his banner with a very old spiritual item. Nice!

Material could be Canadian banded slate. I saw a pipe made out of it once. Just like the grey and green slate that I see around here, but more of a brownish / red. Just a thought. Great find!

My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Beautiful find, I think I need to educate myself on native american artifacts. I probably would have just passed by it. Following the link above, these items seem to sell for a good chunk of change. Good work! It may be worth authenticating, what do you think?
Imletting a professor at the University of Kentucky look at it right now, and as soon as he saw it he was really thrilled to " see such a beauty " in the perfect shape it is in.

Allen that is a SUPER find!!! Congratulations on making a well deserved Banner. I have never seen one of those and don't even remeber it from my Indian artifact reference books. With no till farming and the tobacco buyout, most of the Cumberland River bottoms with artifacts are not plowed anymore. WTG & HH, Quindy.
