OK, long story short. I went out detecting today at Sunrise, it was nice and cool but there were thousands of mosquitoes and I had forgotten my bug spray tongue3. Anyway, got to the part of the field that I wanted to be at and started to set up, had a cup of coffee and a cigarette then fired up the Xp. I got the usual suspects for the first couple of hours, old coppers, lead and bits and bobs. So I decided to head toward an area that I had found a livery button a couple of weeks before, I suddenly got a weakish signal, but it still sounded nice, so I dug and a beautiful Anglo Saxon Sceat was suddenly lying there in front of me. I have managed to identify it now ( Series K, Type 42, Metcalf variety (b) ), and it's in really good condition. Unfortunately the rest of the morning passed uneventfully , more of the usual suspects, but it was good to be out and great to get my second Saxon coin for the year. Now on with the pics.

1.)  The Sceat in the ground.
2.)  Obverse of the Sceat
3.)  Reverse of the Sceat, showing a dog with a berry tree behind.
4.)  Usual Suspects page 1
5.)  Usual Suspects page 2

Det vi vet er så uendelig lite mot det som har hendt. Arkeologen er som den som går langs en strand og finner småtterier, skyllet i land fra et forsvunnet skib. Men selve skibet som gikk i dypet med menneskene får han aldri se.
